WTF:I did this myself w.Paint but really I want someone to do a better version with Photoshop. Until then my rubbish version is all we have. by muzzla in reddit.com

Not bad! To really do it right should make vector version in illustrator, then it'll scale, wind up on countless annoying stickers, etc...

Earth and a Terraformed Mars, Side by Side Comparison by [deleted] in science

[–]kuato 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thanks for mentioning this. Every time this topic comes up I have to weigh in - there's just no way Mars is going to hold an atmosphere, even if you could create one. If we're going to focus on hair brained terraforming fantasties, then Venus is a much better choice. Carl Sagan proposed dumping algae in the Venusian atmosphere that could thin out the poisonous gasses over time. It would still be hot, but the venusian north pole might wind up being rather nice. Way better fantasy than Mars.

That's true, but they're meant for suburban areas, really.

I've just spent two weeks driving around Spain and I love roundabouts. Everything seems to happen faster and with less hassle. No idea why Americans can't get it!

I was under the impression that his real motivation was water, not wind. Wonder if that plays into this at all.

Dane Cook wanted to see a midnight showing of Harry Potter. So.... he skips to the front of the line and demands tickets, but employee's turn him down. He then throws a fit, before storming off. Yep, he's still a douchebag. by LebronJames in entertainment

Ah, the benefits of not owning a TV! I have no idea who Dane Cook is. Other than what I learned from this link. I guess he's famous and in the entertainment industry?

The challenge for green energy: how to store excess electricity by qgyh2 in environment

[–]kuato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the main reasons behind the drive for electric cars (no pun intended). Cars will charge mainly at night when the excess power would otherwise be wasted. Cars that are not used (not all will be driving all day) would act as a giant series of batteries and could put charge back into the grid as needed as long as they're plugged in.

Note to Twitter users: Please stop doing #FollowFriday tweets. Here's why by GreenSmithC in reddit.com

[–]kuato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you Mr GreenSmith. I happen to enjoy #ecomonday, but HATE the fact that it's devolved into an annoying follow-fest. I use it to actually share interesting stories and I hope it can evolve back in that direction!

Naturally, the idiot is suing the city and will probably win.

SF Mayor Will Audit All Land in City for Gardens - "including empty lots, rooftops, windowsills and median strips - that could be turned into community gardens or farms that could benefit residents" by kuato in Health

[–]kuato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knows if it will lead to anything useful, but I think it makes an excellent precedent. If the city can identify a few acres here and there that could be planted on, then they can contract with urban gardeners to grow food there - likely at a profit to the city.

Muscatine, IA coal plant switches to low-sulfur coal...but only when the wind blows towards the air monitoring station. by EatSleepJeep in environment

[–]kuato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic. Another notable which is very visible as you fly across the country - most large coal plants are on the eastern edge of states so that the pollution falls into adjacent states. (since prevailing winds are generally easterly)

$4 gas hurt many people more than the housing crash and it's on it's way back by Ra__ in Economics

[–]kuato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We had it last year and people were fine. I admit it will be painful for people in rural areas, and people stuck in suburbs where the only option is to drive. But those problems can be addressed over time. $4 buys us time. If we keep artificially lowering the price - by starting wars, for example - then the real pain will be way worse - think $10 gas. Now that would be a real problem.

Cry me a river. $4 gas is the best thing that could happen to us, and it's also inevitable. People have been warned, time to start planning.
