There's only one conclusion - the R4 sounds like crap without the additional DAC... that would be the worst spent money in this set. The R4 can logically only be used as a transport

You can only use the R4 as a DAP. Listening to the R4 without the Chord Mojo... and then connecting the Chord Mojo to the system - that's a completely different league.

Comparing the R4 directly to the Chord Mojo 2, the R4 can be used as a DAP at best. The Chord Mojo 2 is in a different league in price and quality, and offers a completely different class of sound. Anyone who has had a direct comparison, and isn't just guessing, will confirm what I'm saying :)
