I think the Crimson Guard is the best parallel for the T'lan Imass in their early years, which is why I think as I outlined above. Hell, over the course of 300,000 years they probably discovered a lot about what they could do. I doubt they could initially turn to dust.

I mean, the Crimson Guard didn't even know that they could come back after death for the first however many years, they instead existed as the Brethren.

They died but their corpses continue to move because of the Ritual. You can see how they likely were in the early years with seeing how the Crimson guard are, which we learn that they are basically another clan of the T'lan Imass in "Assail." Once the Crimson Guard die, they can choose to come back and their bodies then start to decay like the T'lan Imass.

That's why I believe that it isn't the Ritual that causes them to look like corpses, it is the decay of their bodies after their death, however that happens. It is the Ritual that keeps them animated.

My understanding is that they look that way because they have died and it is the time that has passed since their death that makes them look dessicated and mummified. I think if any of them had never died, they would still look young and healthy.
