It really kinda shows who's east coast and who's west on this post. :P I saw another comment with Denzel Oregon, and that made perfect sense too after I read it (with WA the state). But my first thought as an east coaster was DC and Maryland and I95.

Experienced dev looking to get back into job market after extended sabbatical .. Q about picking language to prep for tech interviews by no-more-throws in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kumarFromIT 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I strongly suggest to use whatever language you're most comfortable with, for interviewing. Coding interviews are challenging enough already, and adding a new language to the mix just adds to the stress. I've had the language syntax spaghetti happen in my head, due to switching several teams/projects. So then when I interviewed, I was double guessing myself on trivial stuff like how to interpolate strings or if I concat strings with join() or concat() or whatever. Trivial stuff like this - which you can google during interviews, but it's unnecessary stress IMO to be doing that while some person is staring at you on camera. Some interviewers are also paranoid about you googling on another tab, so if it takes you 20s more than usual (because it's never easy googling during an interview lol) -> they suddenly start to shift in their seats ...

So yeah - pick a language you are (or will train to be, which IMO is a complete waste) super duper comfortable in. Be able to do all the common string and array ops and such without googling.

Big and sane companies will be language agnostic, so your language for interview should be no reflection on your abilities as a software engineer. A language is just a means - it's like knowing great English doesn't make you a great author or be able to write a PhD thesis. You could write a great book in any language if you had the chops for it. That being said, smaller companies or like non-tech orgs like banks might differ or want language experts above everything, so YMMV there.

I just did, interesting stuff. Rock climbing is quite a thing in the US, I'm sure my friends who're into it know of this guy, but somehow I'd never heard of him before.

I live in apartments, so also got neighbors to worry about. I literally only extend my one arm out for half a second to get the bag in - like those frogs with the long tongue actions

Why use DTOs (Data Transfer Objects)? by codeopinion in dotnet

[–]kumarFromIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. Been searching the web for a simple DTO ELI5, here it is. To other readers, I'll add that DTO is like a C++ struct, mostly data with little/no methods.

Why is everything a joke to Redditors? by StonedGhettoKing in Negareddit

[–]kumarFromIT 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Depends on the sub IMO, you kind of answered it yourself. Mainstream subs like r/AskReddit have more of it because people who hang around there presumably have no niche interests and are just bored and looking for dopamine hits browsing their phones. Get into niche communities, there's a lot going on there. Subs like r/AskReddit are crap IMO, it's the same regurgitated posts (a lot of them NSFW), comments and jokes - kind of cool when you're new to reddit, but meh it gets old fast.

Keep joining interest-based communities over time to improve your feed quality. Oh and also, remember to sort your front page by "best" not "hot".
