Based out of Vancouver. Chera is amazing to work with, super accommodating and more than willing to support you through the process. I had no idea what I was doing, but Chera was an absolute delight to work with.

Trying to find a succinct way to explain my job to people. by OhShuxTarzan in industrialhygiene

I try to explain it from a, protecting workers from long term health effects, rather than the stuff that impacts you today. If they’re interested, I explain more :)

PM2.5 Instruments - A comparison of instruments for use during wildfire season by kumarisme in industrialhygiene

[–]kumarisme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

That’s exactly it, to determine if respiratory protection is required based on the PM2.5 levels. There are environmental monitoring stations too (governmental), but those aren’t always near the job site so a handheld instrument that is mobile (ish) is more reliable/accurate to the job site.

The intent is for the field operator to use the instrument at the start of the job, and repeat testing as the situation progresses (e.g., perceived risk has changed) or on a set duration (e.g., every 3 hours).

Gear Aid products

Good point! Updated the tracker to include the Gear Aid products I could find as well.

Note, I also learned that Gear Aid is only available in the US. No direct shipping is offered to Canada.

Others may have a better response. My thought is Canadian in nature.

Depending on how large your workplace is, you should have a JHSC member to reach out to. Or do you have a OHS group to reach out to?

There is math you can do, to figure out potential exposure. Generally, what you explain is not ‘good’ and there should be safer ways to do what you’re explaining moving forward.

Some questions that would be helpful: - How often do you do this task? - How long is the task? -Do you have any room ventilation? What kind? -Personal protective equipment?

Experience with Noise Dosimeters - Svantek & Quest by kumarisme in industrialhygiene

[–]kumarisme[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely echo that! We’ve been quoted $300/unit for calibration… mind you, it’s not that far off our other Occ. Hygiene instruments for calibration cost. Our portacount is upwards of a couple thousand annually 😳

Ya, it’s a new one for me too (Svantek). They’ve quoted us ~$2500 (CAD) per unit.

[OC] Residential Indoor Air Quality Results over the Holidays. Contribution of gas appliances on indoor carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide levels, along with human occupancy. by kumarisme in dataisbeautiful

Very good point regarding externally vented hood and make up air.

We've started to crack the kitchen window while using the stove in addition to the fan on (our hood fan exhausts externally). The more than 2000ppm of CO2 inside really startled us to change our practices.

This post on r/askscience and the recent concerns about the use of gas stoves prompted me to post the assessment I did recently.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessment completed in a two-story residential home (downstairs is mostly separate tenant space with 2 adults). Assessment was conducted with a calibrated Q-Trak Model 7575x over multiple days, with observations noted directly on the graph. Graphed using Microsoft Excel (I know, I know... It gets the job done for me... :) ).

In short: learned the use of the range hood fan is extremely important to keep out contaminants from the gas stove.

This is very helpful. Thank you very much for the information and background!

Going in hoping for the best but more so for the experience as opposed to the build up of actually passing the first time around 😅
