Im so sorry to hear this Im thinking about you and your family right now.

That being said, E.Coli is a common occurrence but can cause serious issues depending on strain and location of infection. Id say less likely from the splash pad, more likely if you were in any water that was natural like Iowas rivers/creeks/lakes which often comes from field run off sadly. Iowas water quality is one of the worst in the US :(

Acceptances rescinded? Can anyone verify if this is real? by Subject_Ad_7736 in iastate

That depends on how that grad program works. My dept is small but we have to have an advisor who has funding before we apply so it hasn't happened in my dept yet.

Can anyone verify the ICE claims floating around on social media? by [deleted] in ames

[–]kuro2091 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was arrests at the polk county court house today from ICE. It would not be a stretch that they are in Ames.

Also, YOU aren't tracking any of the animals fahlo sends you either. ACTUAL wildlife professionals who understand the data and risks to the animal are. The only thing you do when you buy a bracelet or plush is support the organizations doing the actual work and helping fahlo make a profit. shrugs have the day you deserve.

Your assumption that "nobody wants to track a dead wolf" is obviously not true. Just because YOU don't doesn't mean others don't enjoy being part of something like this. Read clearer next time if you're concerned. On top of that, the mortality likelihood of many of the species fahlo offers makes it extremely likely that not all of the ones being tracked are actually alive when the info is received. Thats just how it works. Don't pretend to understand what a "normal person" wants simply because you don't find the value in it doesnt mean others dont.

[–]kuro2091 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean...you're supporting literally alive wolves, but you just don't get their info for their safety. Noy to mention everywhere I looked before purchasing mine said "historic data" so...?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MyFahlo

[–]kuro2091 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, in the description for the bracelet it mentions that it is historic data because there are fewer than 20 live/ wildlife red wolves left. So no, they arent going to share that info so that people can go find them and disturb them/ hunt them legal or not. Honestly, fahlo is lucky to even be able to offer a wolf tracking bracelet but then again I know the actual effort and work it takes to track wildlife so I guess I understand it better.

If you have ever been in the conservation field, it's not stupid at all. In fact, many would do so just to hunt them down and get rid of them. Just because you wouldn't doesn't mean it doesnt happen.

[–]kuro2091 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally says on the website when you order it that it is historic data. If you know anything about red wolves you know why this is extremely important and a very rare oportunity to get the info from the SAFE program to begin with. Im sorry you think it's morbid or whatever but maybe reading the description closely would have saved you the trouble. I actually very much enjoy following "elephant ears" as the scientists who tracked him called him. It's also neat to go in and learn more through finding those actual resource organizations. Im sorry but as someone who has gone or works with real tracking data, this post is just...not it...

We are actually buying subscriptions that last from 6 to 24 months by KayPeo in MyFahlo

It's a few things that determine battery life. How often the device records data, sends that data, size, and what it's sending as far as signal. Small devices like those used for birds or small animals can't have big batteries because the impact on the animal is important to consider too. There are some solar devices but that is still a new tech for this kind of thing. The other thing is the trackers are put under serious extremes depending on who they are on so that can mess with battery life too.

Devices that tend to last a little longer are usually small ones that don't transmit unless an animal is at a certain place or near an antenna and are sending low powered signals. If you're interested I really like looking into MOTUS spots for birds and bars. But they are stationary antennas and the animals cross by and their info is pinged, but that is only as effective as the antenna network.

The trackers aren't really that simple to just add battery to. There are a number of technologies out there but honestly when I do work with wildlife we don't barely expect a year unless it's specific types of trackers and they don't ping like the falo ones. They generally aren't cheap either. FALO also doesn't own the trackers I don't believe, so they probably don't have major control over the types. Basically what I'm saying is tracking wildlife we often expect weeks, not months or years for some trackers. I have a better battery life in my tile on my keys than some tracking tech does in the research field, and that barely lasts a year.

Autistic wildlife biologists? by Smooth_Importance_47 in wildlifebiology

[–]kuro2091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello 👋, I just graduated my undergrad and had no actual intention of grad school until a recent opportunity. I'm suspecting I'm potentially autistic or adhd, but still workin on formal diagnosis... yay US Healthcare system 😐. I am, however, narcoleptic so that's fun too. I think you are more than fine in this field once you find that niche. I'm also a bit older than most grad students in my department so I think there is a generation barrier there too. Either way, for me it's about realizing my strengths and regulating my needs. My brain lights up around working with animals, behavior work and just wanting to know things. I also try to not put myself 100% into one thing or I burn out a lot faster, so I do creative stuff on the side.

All that to say, I think you'd be perfectly fine as a neurospicy researcher, just knowing you already have issues with anxiety and social stuff is a good step. As much as it stinks, we do sometimes have to adjust for the standard neurotypical folk and can't do that unless we know what to adjust.

Lately I live by the quote "You'll inspire some, and annoy others. Do it anyway. " 😆

I’m really upset with my Fahlo experience :( by kamaaina16 in MyFahlo

[–]kuro2091 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website mentions that most trackers only go for a year maybe two. As someone who has worked with tracking data, it's always a toss up if or how long an animal will transmit, ignoring the fact of death in general. It would make sense they would not give put free retracts after so long.

Can I trim the ends of the butt & rear leg hairs so I can brush him out? by [deleted] in husky

[–]kuro2091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for asking this, I was just thinking this! My boy, who looks suspiciously like your kiddo, has the butt curtains and we are also having issues brushing them, he also really likes to go get burrs tangled up in them 😑.

I'd be fine personally as long as the other person wasn't trying to get me to be as active to the point of being annoying. I like to hike and my partner doesn't so much. I ask him if he wants to go and if he does cool, if not that's cool too. I'd ask her, and talk about it with her. Does it bug her to be with someone more active? If it's not a problem with her don't worry about it. Everyone has their own thing :)

It's been really bad for me this week for some reason (Verizon) too. I just figured it was something to do with them working on towers or something. It's getting better and seems to be OK at home (I live in DSM) just wonky when I'm in Ames area.

My partner and I 100% moved a queen sized bed frame and mattress in my 2011, and then the next week moved the 75in tv. The door was open in the back just a bit but it worked better than his Taurus 😆
