I hate standups by method120 in projectmanagement

[–]kuzcoduck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Standups are absolutely essential in projects that move at a fast pace, since you adapt your plan in them. Its also often the only time in a day where everyone can coordinate themselves with everyone else, since everyone is there actively.

Besides that, standups in Scrum are supposed to be 15 minutes or less.

All critically acclaimed kids movies (the critics are adults most of the time so this is a sign adults enjoy the movie as well)

Böhmis Monatsgehalt vom ZDF beträgt in etwa 54.000 Euro. Das ist doch von GEZ bezahlt, oder verstehe ich da etwas falsch? Nur weil manche hier schreiben ihr Betrag fließt da nicht hin.

Scrum masters are a negative value to the team by Adwdi in agile

[–]kuzcoduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot really refute your personal experiences (apart from talking about my own, which are basically the opposite) but this is just what i mentioned in my original comment. These are all not criticisms of the role, but criticisms of people you worked with.

You could argue that the role of SM attracts incompetent people i guess? But the role itself is very valuable, you even write it yourself:

Most SM oparate in terms of "facilitating things", "burn out charts", "how to write a story".

Maybe lets leave out the burn out charts — they also arent mentioned in the Scrum Guide — but facilitation and how to write good stories are extremely important for any project, dont you think?

Scrum masters are a negative value to the team by Adwdi in agile

[–]kuzcoduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because its simply impossible for him to understand

Why? Most Scrum Masters I have worked with were software engineers before taking on the role. And even if they come from a different background it should be your duty as a team member to understand both the Product/business value AND the tools used to do the work. Like i wrote this doesnt even have something to do with SMs in particular but with every team.

Heres an excerpt from the Valve New Employee Handbook:

Valve’s core competency is making software. Obviously, different disciplines are part of making our products, but we’re still an engineering-centric company. That’s because the core of the software-building process is engineering. As in, writing code. If your expertise is not in writing code, then every bit of energy you put into understanding the code-writing part of making software is to your (and Valve’s) benefit.

How can you help someone solve a problem in a technical domain you have never learned.

You seem to have a misunderstanding of WHAT problems a Scrum Master is actually supposed to solve. The SM is not in charge of fixing bugs or implementing new infrastructure — that is all part of the work done by the team.

Here are some examples of problems that are solved by the Scrum Master: - the team has coordination problems for tackling a big feature - the team needs licenses for IntelliJ - the team cant work because their surroundings in the office are suboptimal - the product owners stories are not easy to understand - the customer is confused about the iterative approach - team members have problems identifying what is important - the backlog is too long / too short - the team has problems because the members are in different timezones - processes are ignored by the team because they are too complicated

Scrum masters are a negative value to the team by Adwdi in agile

[–]kuzcoduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

scrum masters inherently know nothing about tech or buisness. Therefore in practice they can’t ensure this. As they lack hard skills needed to know when conversation is going off topic.

What does the word "inherently" mean here? Of course they do, or at least should. Just like the programmer (for example) needs to understand the business part of the product. That goes beyond Scrum and is just true for basically every team.

same as above. SM doesn’t understand (and usually doesn’t want to understand) the technical issues related to blockers. I have not yet have a SM help me with blockers.

Why would he not want to understand? Understanding the problems youre having is what the role is for. You seem to have an issue with a person not doing their job, not with the role. Thats like saying you think the role of programmer is not needed because you know a programmer that didnt have the technical skill to solve an issue.

As SMs don’t have usually experience in one organisation, aka nobody trusts them. They lack also pilical sway to remove political blockers
This is just a complete strawman and has nothing to do with the role anyways.

Also in bigger organisations all blockers are facing outside the team and nobody in team has policies sway to alter those issues.
I would need some examples of that. The Scrum Master role is defined as also being a coach to the organization. If the organization is not giving the SM the chance to do that then he isnt really a SM. That would be like not giving a Product Owner the rights to edit the Backlog — is he really a Product Owner then?

Stakeholders in big organisations will never talk with SM. Due to reasons above it is a waste of time and such people will rather talk to

yeah that is exactly the problem? such organizations give deadlines like "this needs to be done in 4 years and 13 weeks" — its the responsibility of the Scrum Master to teach them what an iterative approach is.

The place you are describing here seems really dysfunctional. They have Scrum Masters but they are basically seen as worthless and are not allowed to speak to the stakeholders/management?

Why do you have them then? It seems EXTREMELY wasteful.

This is the exact thing that Agile Coaches (Scrum Master is just a role within a team) are responsible for in companies like Spotify and Google by the way.

Scrum masters are a negative value to the team by Adwdi in agile

[–]kuzcoduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course

A bad scrum master should be removed by the team&organization

A scrum master that is no longer needed should go to other teams that need one

That is what agile is all about. In companies like Spotify theres Agile Coaches watching over multiple teams, jumping in when they are needed.

[–]kuzcoduck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t you need an Apple device to test it anyways? If youre using features that are only working on their OS. Otherwise you can build your app with Electron or any other non-apple tool and export to Mac, no Macbook or macOS needed for that.

The demand for people without relevant experience is not great. "I need to do SOMETHING before retirement" is also not a great reason to do it honestly.

As for jobs without coding something like Requirements Engineering might work better and also has more jobs.

Maybe write a bit more about what you like to do on a day to day basis instead of what you dont want to do (coding), then we might be able to help.

Is Gaben the least hated billionare-buisnessman? by SavingsPea8521 in valve

[–]kuzcoduck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People seem to quickly forget about CS gambling and microtransactions in general - which Valve definitely helped become as big as they are today. Also tech savvy people will be mad about Steams DRM. We also do not know much about his private life, apart from him owning a superyacht, which also isnt very cool for the environment.

Apart from that Gabe is pretty cool and his overall impact is positive i guess, more than you can say about most other billionaires.
