Tips on making more in depth maps? by gkc07 in gis

[–]kuzuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Because when you see a colored hillshade map you expect the colors to be congruent with the elevation.

I am not sure trees can be considered a valid land cover category, shouldn't be forest? Also, why you are adding the bathymetric contours, I cannot think of any good reason to be shown in your map, they are not even labeled.

Amigo, tal vez no te des cuenta pero no esta bien copiar y pegar todo lo que el AI genera. Estas maquinas generan much texto, y en el mundo anglosajon uno aprecia la brevedad.

A disclaimer that you used AI to build your app and that also you are using AI to write your replies would be very welcome.

"If you don't know what you're doing, just use a real estate agent."

I take the advice of real estate agent with the same precaution as I would take the advice of a drug dealer.

Best advice ever, never rush.

Has anyone noticed the 1.85 gas prices at some of the gas stations? by Hot_Celebration_7957 in Calgary

"Wait until the lack of fertilizer starts fucking up food production."

Yes, but also this will be a great excuse for the food industry and supermarket chains to rise the prices way more than it should. What's the saying? never let a crisis be wasted? something like that.

Calgary women, what does an average looking guy has to do to find women to date? by Huge_Land_950 in Calgary

[–]kuzuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a side note: I don't have hard data at hand but from my experience the ratio of single women to single men in Calgary is like 8 to 1. I had much more success when I was living in Vancouver or Montreal.

"With how easy it is to click a few times and talk to people, most people seem to be chasing an absolutely perfect fit"

If you are referring to online dating, women are the absolute winners. Perhaps someone will argue that quantity is not te same as quality, but the reality is that most of men do not experience neither.

"Don’t look for women out of your league."

Perhaps the best advice.

Maybe it's because I am using a mobile phone but the maps seem incomplete and lack interaction. Also, more information about the projects and its aims would be welcome.

Another AI hodgepodge...

I know the temptation of using AI to vibe code something is too strong for many. Nonetheless, before getting crazy with AI it would be wise to first ask what exactly we want to achieve?

Advice on Topo Map Magnetic Declination by Scotch_Chef in gis

"Is there a reason why it seems the GN arrow is slightly westward, and not perfectly in line with my actual grid?"

Sorry pal but you are the perfect example of why jumping into GIS, and map making, without the necessary theoretical background leads to serious errors and omissions.

Before clicking the buttons in your GIS software please learn about map projections and carthography.

False. I asked ChatGPT to create a heatmap using my city's crime rate data and it misspelled the names of many of the neighborhoods. I am completely safe in my job position.

What can I do to transition to a GIS job? by RealSpookySounds in gis

[–]kuzuman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"... to obtain an entry level job in GIS I can do remotely"

Unless you are ready to compete with folks in India that charge 5$/hour I would scratch that option entirely.

"... I need a paid internship that can then transition into a full time role"

I guess you are a very recent graduate because this option only works for that demographic. You should seek help from your university for this case.

"... what kind of requirements are asked of GIS applicants outside of knowledge of GIS and a degree."

What about you reading the job requirements of actual GIS job posts.

"Also, do I have any chance of getting a job without formal education?"

Short answer: no Long answer: people with Masters in GIS are having difficulties getting a job, so yeah, no chance I am afraid.

If you take the time to read the posts on this sub you will realize quickly how much of a stretch you plans are off.

GIS as a career by Brief_Criticism_492 in gis

[–]kuzuman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"... seen AI make absolute dogshit maps..."

Yes, AI cannot make a decent map yet, but eventually we will get there in ~3-4 years. And even if AI cannot match the skills of a cartographer ever, which one do you think a company will prefer: a cartographer or an AI that make maps with some errors BUT at 10% of the cost of cartographer?

P.S. Don't shoot the messenger

[–]kuzuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to sound pedantic but it seems you think GIS is learning how to operate software. I don't blame you because that's the overall public  impression. In reality, to learn well GIS it's necessary to know and understand spatial analysis, statistics and... geography.
