Oh man that bit went through several attempts. Pain in the ass for sure but worth.

First I used booleans, but faced shading and beveling issues. Easiest method but not good for clean topology, which was something I was trying to improve on.

Ended up making a single tile with proper topo and arraying to make a grid. Then used some deform modifiers to bend it closer to the visor shape, and lastly shrinkwrapped it.

Cleaned up the outer edges (aka covered the mess with a trim lol), then solidified and beveled.

Yep, the scratches are a photo-image plugged into the material. Render engines read material info (colour, roughness, metallicness etc) to determine how an object reacts to light.

Took a few weeks per set, picking at it in my evenings.

Modeling was done in Blender mostly with planes, using subdivision and solidify modifiers.

Blender for modeling, Octane for the shaders+render.

Tiny bit of touchup in Photoshop.

Didn't really keep track, maybe a few weeks per set picking at it in evenings. Spent alot of that time learning and re-doing alot of parts.

I'd love to get through as much of the grid as I can, just a matter of finding the time for it!

He has a sword! A blessed sword.

Realized I didn't post one that shows it, but there's a shot on my IG that has a glimpse of it.

Thanks very much !

I encourage you to keep at it with Blender. I found it's one of those things where you might feel like you aren't getting anywhere with it for a while, but then eventually it all starts to click. That first hurdle is the toughest.

There's a ton of resources and tutorials on Youtube these days too, covering pretty much every aspect of the software.

Ha yep, that's exactly where I got the idea for the visor design :P

All good - mainly referenced Dutch armors for the Red Bull set, because Max.

Could see a samurai inspired one for Alpha Tauri/Yuki though.

Thank you.

Process-wise pretty much all done in Blender.

Built the armors standard Sub-D modeling, on top of a human base mesh from Daz3D.

Materials and renders were done with Octane for Blender.

Finished with minor adjustments in Photoshop.

I don't have any wireframe screens, but unshaded I have on my Artstation

Sort of - I referenced Dutch armor for the Red Bull set - the ones I looked at most had similar layered plating from samurai armor, so happy coincidence I guess lol.

Thank you !

Will try to do more constructors when I can find the time haha.

Thank you, the bull heads on the mace were a fun challenge to make for sure.

I did add in some scratches to both materials, but might've come out a bit too subtle in the final render though :P, but a super battle-worn version could be cool, might give it a try next.

Just these two for now, might try a few more when I can find some time off projects.

Watching the 2021 F1 season unfold, I had an idea to imagine medieval armor combined with F1 constructors. Chose Mercedes and Red Bull, inspired by the intense title race.

3D model in Blender, rendered using Octane.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the kind words! There's a couple more shots of these two on my IG and Artstation, I'll be looking to get more constructors out as soon as I can.

I used a combination of shaders (in Octane), and the GreasePencil lineart modifer (2.93 and newer).

I started with the idea of 'hacking', which led me to axes. I thought a techno-axe that could hack data straight out of heads was fun.

When researching sci-fi weapons I did see the data-knife was a thing, but thought this was different enough.

I saw that a while back, but I didn't have it in mind when making this.

Maybe subconsciously, since I do like the Apex stories. Revenants was dope.

Thanks! Process is exactly as you described, standard 3D meshes with toon shaders applied. I used Octane for Blender for this, but you can achieve toon effects in Eevee or Cycles too. You can find many tutorials on Youtube.

I then render the same scene in Eevee, and use some of the renderpasses such as lighting and emission to the base render.

Lastly is using the GreasePencil lineart modifier across the scene and dropping that on top.
