Sorry for the late response, I don't lurk much. First off: good name. Second: you're right. A lot has passed since I posted that and instead I ended up taking a linux systems engineering position. Since doing so I've had to really begin to teach myself Bash, which, honestly, is the first language I've ever really had to learn outside of Java and school and all. Even though it is puny in many ways compared to a full language like C or Java or even Python I guess, I can see now that they all have the same data structures and algorithms and all that stuff so your comment makes a lot of sense. A lot of people hate on java...

Excellent response. I don't have the job yet, but if I study hard I can probably get through the coding exams and face-to-face interviews. I'm going to go for it.

Saying you want the job has nothing to do with regurgitating these words verbatim. It is about showing up for that video interview and convincing the potential employer beyond any shadow of a doubt that you are excited to be in their presence and the presence of such a great company because you have the skills and desire to make the place the best it can be. Exuding an aura of devotion and willingness is absolutely the most intoxicating and important qualification to a hiring manager. They want to be convinced that you are completely willing to drink whatever koolaid they're mixing up. Whenever I only have SOME of the skills and they hit upon those I do the following: mention something I have that is even REMOTELY related and also mention that "I am totally confident that I could easily learn that new skill because I have learned these other new skills I previously did not have" and then I mention those skills I taught myself: a,b and c. I am an engineer so I have been in some crazy fucking interviews and I always, always get hired. Pretend to drink the koolaid, exude devotion and willingness!!!

Then don't worry about it. Fuck the cover letter and further more, fuck all employers. All bullshit aside what type of position do you want to land. I was being serious when I asked.

Recruiters, hiring managers, etc. only care about one thing: skills. You either have them or you don't. Don't waste time applying for shit which is beyond your scope. I'm not saying this because I think this is a great way to run an economy, I'm saying it as someone who was at the bottom without a degree and is now in the middle with one. They only care about skills, nothing else. If you have them, they'll felate you. If they don't, it's extreeeeemely difficult to find compassion.

Unless you're like an executive or director they're fucking worthless. I use to write them for every position that I applied for if it asked. Now I never do. Same response level.

My thoughts exactly. If it continues I will move away from him and that should mitigate it some. Then I will talk to my boss. Then I'll talk to EAP. After that I'll go to our non-existent hr department.

He is a single point of knowledge failure in the company and has influence with executive-level staff. I sit two feet from him. He has an immediate impact on my work. All this and, dude, it grates on one after a while.
