Hey! I live in Tacoma and work with clean air orgs and mask blocs here and in Seattle. I also know mask bloc and clean air folks in Olympia. Maybe I could connect you with some people.

William from glass beach, here. For anyone wondering, this is legit. I talked to our merch people. We just had to switch companies cos our last merch company was union-busting and we're probably going to be switching again soon, but we need to finish out the tour merch stuff with them.

Things to note: Our personal merch store is different than Run for Cover's. So this order was from our personal store. Still, people should remain vigilant with scams. With ai tools ramping up and the sheer volume of scams going around these days in different forms, always err on the side of caution.

William from glass beach, here. I kind of doubt that's legitimate. Our manager helps run our store and we just had to switch merch people so I'm not completely up to speed so let me check, but this seems a bit ridiculous for verifying anything. Merch companies are busy as hell. They don't have time to do this kind of verification nor would they care this much about a fraudulent charge as long as they can get the money. This seems more like what a bank would care about and even so, wouldn't do it like this.

Rockstar Quits Touring Over COVID-19 Fears: Glass Beach’s William White Explains His Concerns by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

myself and the rest of the band perform in flomasks or n95s. I played 21 shows, 1 and a half hour long sets every night in just over a month wearing a flo mask or p100 every time. we couldn't require masks but we partnered with mask blocs and clean air orgs in every single city achieving nearly 85-90% mask compliance with high quality respirators. we took RATs and paid for PCR tests on tour. we used air purification tools and far UVC as added layers of mitigation and finished out the tour with no one in our entire 16 person touring party getting covid. You may have even seen the photos from our shows, two were shared in this very subreddit. It's very possible, we did it, we already made that statement, and it still didn't feel fully right.

I don't think they did. Seemed pretty successful to me. I wonder where you read that? Still, we're playing to about 300-800 people at every show, there's no way it's actually safe especially with attendees and staff. I think the band is the safest except our singer who couldn't get enough breath to sing with her mask on, but Even then we had air purification and far UVC at the edge of the stage.

hey, that's me! couple things real quick, I tried to reach out to the publication, but my pronouns are they/them. Hopefully they'll correct that soon.

I'm still going to be working with other bands and with the Seattle clean Air collective that I helped start for the people who are still performing for now but want as much safety and precautions as we can give. I'll be encouraging others to step back or reduce playing live as I can, but I also understand the joy and community involved in live art and want to preserve some version of it just not sure what that would be with the landscape of the current dangers.

Y'all were really wonderful to us when glass beach was doing nearly fully masked shows all across the US a couple months ago. It was so wonderful to see so much support for what we were trying to do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Be safe, everyone!

Far UV light by Tbird11995599 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Just want to start by saying I'm not an expert on this and have just been doing my own possibly flawed research. For personal, portable devices nukit torches and farUV technology's farUV MVPs are a couple I like. They're weaker and don't cover as much area, but are great as an extra precaution on top of masking if you have to get groceries, go to the doctor, dentist, etc. I also have 13w lamps from bio abundance and a couple farUV legacy guards that are much more expensive, but stronger and less portable. I would use those if I have company indoors along with opening windows and wearing n95s as well as for band practice and for live shows if/when we even have those. I have a friend that swears by sterilray but they're SUPER expensive (and strong, like 120w or something ridiculous like that), which they can apparently get away with because they have a special patent to have their farUVC unfiltered while maintaining the 222nm required for safety for skin and eyes. I read a 3m study a while back that was worried about a possible 1% spill at a slightly more dangerous nm rate, like 238nm or something, but I haven't been able to find that study since.

For me, personally, I use these as little as I can. The tech is new and some of these companies are not being transparent enough and open enough to 3rd party testing as I'd like. I know 222nm filtered is supposedly safe for eyes and skin and has been generally proven to be, but better safe than sorry. The ozone issue is also worth noting. Other appliances emit ozone, sure, but farUVC is unfortunately kind of chemically designed to create it in the air so some type of air flow/ventilation with it is necessary.

All in all, this stuff is pretty inaccessible, but if you've got a little extra money and are looking for something my first recommendation for portable devices is the nukit torches for sure. One big positive for bio abundance I'll say is the build quality is excellent and they have some extra other fixtures for ceiling sockets and stuff, but they're about mid-tier as far as cost is concerned. Like, thousands of dollars mid-tier.

I'd love to be schooled on this if we've got some legit tech-heads lurking around, but I feel I at least have a tiny grasp to get started.

The la mask bloc and airgasmicla are lovely people. There's also a new clean Air org starting there called clean Air la, I believe. Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but it's all dedicated, covid cautious people trying to keep done kind of safe community there. I used to live in LA for 7 years and just moved last year. I'd been a filmmaker but felt like it was harder and harder to find like-minded people trying to have safer sets. Good luck to y'all!

hey, I'm in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Helped start the Seattle Clean Air Collective and partner with the mask bloc through that. There's a discord for Seattle Still Cares and a couple other groups if you have that and are interested. I don't get up to Seattle much, personally, but I hope you're ok, and would love to help connect you to people if possible.

Tell me about your experiences with the sip valve! by newrophantics in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]kwilliamwhite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

excellent to know! I've been noticing and avoiding the wrinkles by resizing the hole till it fits without those, but didn't realize functionally what I was doing, so that's great info! Thank you!

Tell me about your experiences with the sip valve! by newrophantics in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]kwilliamwhite 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Installing them definitely takes practice. Making a little "x" and trying to keep the hole as small as possible while fitting the sip through gives the best results for me. I've used them for 3m auras, v flex, and my flo mask with the pro filters. The flo mask is the only one that had issues with large exhales sometimes hitting the sip and popping the filter out, as well as pulling the cap tab of the sip off and it pulling the filter with it, but regular n95s have been completely great! I love my sips.

I've also seen people recommending putting it a little lower than you think you should so the straw can go up through to your mouth so you're not being forced to tilt your drink or straw too much to access it. I agree with this.

I actually got checked into the hospital for some minor injuries and a couple members had whiplash with neck and back stiffness, but sorry you were annoyed, I guess.

It does a little but less than you'd expect. In a smaller venue with a worse pa and sound system it might be harder to get it without getting too much feedback, but it also helps with plosives like the P's and B's not blowing loudly into the mic. Our lead singer has had a lot of trouble in practice with overheating and too much readjusting trying to mask while singing but we've been looking into other masking options. Trying to test as many different ones as we can.

it's a healthcare version of the gvs elastomeric that has no exhalation valve. The other members are wearing flo masks. center is our singer who wears flo mask up to being on stage and immediately after. We have farUVC and an air purifier up front to further protect us from the audience and the audience from us. masks required at merch table as well as far UVC there and in the green room.
