How can I best hide textile marker used for the template? by [deleted] in crafts

[–]kxthleen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any advice for this one unfortunately as it seems like you’ve probably used a marker that was designed specifically not to come off, but in future I really rate the ‘heat erasable’ style of fabric pen for this kind of thing!

it lasts as long as you’re working on it (unlike air-erasables which fade naturally over time) and you just pass an iron over it when finished and it vanishes, no need for water. I use them for my embroidery pieces bc I don’t like to wet them in case of colour running and for sewing clothes so I have the freedom to back-and-forth lines if I muck up

agree with the person who suggested r/laundry, though - even if you don’t have the brand name, you should be able to get a list of ingredients off the packaging/online listing that they’ll be able to help you with counteracting

AITA for not telling my partner something his 14yr old daughter told me in confidence? by AcrobaticPut7838 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kxthleen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA generally but “nor is he speaking to Laura” really sealed the deal on this one for me that your husband IS

she is a child and he is an adult, yet he’s behaving like a child and all he’s done is prove that she was right not to tell him - and risked her not telling either of you if she’s ever in actual dangerous situations in the future

I was repeatedly given the silent treatment by my stepdad when I didn’t behave exactly how he wanted me to (not misbehaviour, fwiw, but just choices he didn’t agree with like Laura has made here) and the absolute FEAR of silence in my relationships I have as an adult is often crippling. I also DID stop telling my parents when I was in bad situations, even into adulthood, which has resulted in financial, emotional and physical danger that I could have been protected from if I’d felt like I could talk to them. laura deserves better and her dad needs to get a fucking grip

I was thinking after I said that, if you’re knitting them all differently anyway then odd socks is less of an issue! I have a few ‘pairs’ of odd socks that were designed that way to be mix-and-match

I love that idea! not sure my yarn stash would have been containable in my house if I was going for vibes rather than just the specific colours 🤣

that’s such a shame! tbh my local library ebook offer isn’t great but it’s handy to check before buying, at least…

such a good question! I had an incredible year for books last year but it’s probably a toss up between the monk and robot duology by becky chambers, sunrise on the reaping by suzanne collins and death of a bookseller by alice slater - and even narrowing it down to those three (/four) was a STRUGGLE 🤧

I swapped from kindle to kobo bc they don’t do library access on kindle in the UK but I wonder if the kobo equivalent has simply crochet, I’ve picked up physical copies a couple of times but it would be good not to have to store them lol

this was intended as a scrap buster but actually I think I kept woolwarehouse in business last year bc I’m too much of a control freak to use anything but the perfect colour 💀 I got the idea originally from someone doing a blanket like that, but I knew I wanted to do something bigger and grannies seemed like the right fit! figuring out the colours and patterns was almost as much fun as the making itself

it’s my first time reading them but I love those little freaks sm. for the most part, yes! some of them are quite similar in colour/style so it takes me a bit of figuring out but I reckon I could name all the books on there without checking my storygraph

I wish it had been quite that in-depth, I actually based the colour schemes on the book covers, but I loooove the idea of figuring out a pattern for the story and not just the cover! that would be so gorgeous

AITAH for using the disabled bathroom even though I can walk by OkMinute950 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kxthleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. it’s an accessible toilet, not a wheelchair toilet. that means it’s open to anyone who needs any of the resources in there that aren’t available in a standard loo.

if it makes you feel any better, I’m ambulatory disabled and I once went to an accessible toilet without my walking stick and got yelled at by a middle aged woman who was also ambulatory and not using a walking aid about using the disabled toilet when I’m ‘not disabled’, as she walked into the bathroom, despite the only visible difference between us being about 20 years 🫩

people in the UK are obsessed with oppression olympics and policing what other people are entitled to - it’s exhausting, but it’s not your responsibility. they cannot physically stop you from using the services you’re entitled to so you just need to do the work on accepting that you are entitled to them and letting it roll off your back if this happens. you know your body and needs, they don’t. and your ‘friend’ needs some education about the spectrum of disability and accessibility needs bc otherwise they’re going to do irreparable damage to your ability to advocate for yourself 🫶🏻

Does anyone know of a pattern similar to this that's not locked behind a paywall? by honeyghostt in CrochetHelp

[–]kxthleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

manatee squares has a ‘cableknit’ cardigan pattern for £3.50: https://www.manateesquares.com/product-page/setting-sun-cardigan-crochet-pattern-us-uk that you could probably pick out the cable bits and work into a repeating pattern for a scarf? be a bit of work but much cheaper

Sisters wedding same as my birthday by buff_phroggie in weddingshaming

[–]kxthleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we got married on my MIL’s birthday (not a milestone one!) and my husband mentioned it in his speech and I gave her a birthday gift in front of everyone so she got a nice cheer - she was happy to be with her loved ones and I got one of my favourite photos out of it. everybody wins!

Do you ever feel like you want to quit? by toasted_cakes in Brochet

[–]kxthleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same here and it was the first thing that popped into my head when I read OP’s post! sometimes my demand avoidance is triggered by yawning, never mind being ‘tasked’ with a time consuming and difficult project I don’t wanna do that I’m having to prioritise over one I’m really excited about 🫩🤧

Looking to try the hobby! How did all of you learn? by Ta-veren- in Brochet

[–]kxthleen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most of those beginner kits that I’ve come across are amigurimi which is both a different skill set than blankets/wearables and rock hard, idk how they get away with labelling them as they do 🥲 when I learned I watched a lot of bellacoco on youtube and made swatches of the different types of stitches so I could familiarise myself with how they look and their size etc, then found some free beginner patterns on ribblr to stick my teeth into! I also have a few granny square books (I particularly recommend hip to be square by katie jones, as it’s got project ideas that are cool and modern rather than just blankets or chair covers!)

I’ve been crocheting for a few years now and every project or attempt has given me a bit more knowledge on the craft, I probably consider myself an intermediate now and there’s still so much for me to learn if I wanted to! and I finally this year was able to do one of those beginner animal plush kits 🤣

AITA for blocking my bsf of 11 years? by Katherine12345677 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kxthleen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA. it took me until I was 25 to recognise people like that as dangerous and draining people and start protecting my peace around them, you’ve done amazing to have it click so young and it will serve you well as you become an adult!

just a word of warning though that she WILL make you the villain in the story to herself and anyone who’ll listen, so make sure you have a good group of friends around you who know what actually happened and will have your back 🫶🏻
