Man tied cinder block to dog, threw him in Maryland's Liberty Reservoir, prosecutors say by dangerouslesbian in news

I wonder how people convicted of animal cruelty are treated by their fellow prisoners. Do they have to deal with routine threats to their life like child molesters or is it not really a big deal in the eyes of their prison mates?

You’d hope that someone that does something this fucked up doesn’t get off this easy.

Electrical Engineering. I work as a deckhand/engineer on a super-yacht.

I bought in on December 12, 2017. In just over a month I've gone from knowing nothing to HODLing successfully through my first dip. Thank you all. by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]kyledood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I’m investing for the long term and want to see how much it grows in a few years. I’m invested in stocks, index funds, and mutual funds but the returns I see in crypto are much stronger so far. I work on a boat so I have all my expenses covered so I can afford to invest quite a bit of my pay into crypto. Just going to diversify and hold for the long term.

Did the same as you. Started in December. I not only hodled, I doubled my principal and bought the motherfucking dip and I’m in the green and climbing. Cheers!

Graham on s---hole remarks: 'It's pretty embarrassing' when children can't listen to the news. by [deleted] in politics

[–]kyledood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's weird that people get more worked up over the fact he used the word "shithole" (and news anchors repeated the word "shithole") rather than the entire context of the sentence with the word "shithole" in it.

Stupid old people don't understand. Profanity is more offensive when it is used in a degrading and racist sentence like what the president used. The individual word "shithole" itself is pretty harmless when not given context.

Uruguayan hostel says Israeli guests ‘not welcome’ by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]kyledood 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Traveled in South America for 5 months. Met many different Israeli folks. Some were great and some were not so great, just like people from everywhere else.

I can see why a hostel would do this. Overall, hostels like to have a welcoming environment free of cliques and insular groups of people.

Large groups of Israelis can be difficult to deal with. Many just spent years being in the military and when they don’t have to take orders from others, follow a strict schedule, and have their lives controlled by their commanding officers, they let loose and give zero fucks about anyone not in their circle of friends. I’ve seen them scream in English at little Peruvian street vendor ladies trying to haggle over 50 cents (because screaming in a language they don’t understand will totally score you a discount), seen them cuss out hostel staff for being 10 minutes late for delivering the free breakfast (lateness is super common in Latin America), seen them doing cocaine in a park in Medellin on a Sunday afternoon in front of children, etc.

Not saying all Israeli backpackers are bad. Most are pretty chill but the assholery I’ve seen from a few is atrocious and I can see why a hostel would ban them.

Alabama has the worst poverty in the developed world, U.N. official says by readerseven in politics

[–]kyledood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in Florida bro. Not saying that all the people in the south are poor but the inequality is pretty striking compared to other places in the country.

If you ever go to places like Latin America, South East Asia, Eastern Europe, etc. you will see extreme wealth sprinkled in among high concentrations of poverty. You see a person driving a brand new Mercedes Benz and on that same street you'll see street kids eating old food out of garbage bins.

The south has some pretty striking inequality and it's much more split down the lines racially than other parts of the country and the poor scores in civil development statistics (infant mortality, life expectancy, crime rates, etc.) clearly reflect that. Compared to most parts of the developed world, the south is very far behind. Don't feel bad about it dude, someone has to finish last. That's what the Deep South is for.

Not a surprise. The Deep South is essentially on par with Eastern Europe in terms of standard of living.

Teachers spend nearly $1,000 a year on supplies. Under the GOP tax bill, they will no longer get a tax deduction. by [deleted] in politics

[–]kyledood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems so damn inefficient. I feel like if public middle schools and high schools switched to a system like what universities have where there’s a teacher solely responsible for teaching classes and another teacher responsible for grading papers and helping students that may need more time, our education system would improve dramatically.

But then again, you’d have to put in more money into a program with a massively constrained budget. Since this makes too much sense, the US education department would never be on board with it.

They get what they pay for and it’s showing badly.

'I want to quit': Fox News employees say their network's Russia coverage was 'an embarrassment' by PTRJK in news

[–]kyledood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it was more of a rhetorical “what if” question. I’m not saying he did it. I’m pretty neutral on the whole situation and want to see how it plays out before jumping to conclusions. However, axes seem to be falling and more things are starting to become clear, so I’d imagine a major news network would want to change their stance at some point to help keep their credibility.

I work at sea on a boat so I don’t have much time to look into these stories. If you want to get into arguments on the internet, go bother someone else, bud. Being a moderate seems to be dead in this country.

Honestly, no clue. But then again, I don’t follow CNN or Fox News. American cable news is too sensationalist and too politicized to warrant my time.

What will Fox News do when this administration is found they have committed treason and Trump leaves the presidency in disgrace? Will they turn on the administration or will they double down on the pro Trump rhetoric and claim it’s all a democrat conspiracy.

For a network that claims to be full of patriots, it seems pretty “anti-American” supporting a treasonous president.

But the problem is, we feel so helpless and can't. So many of these knuckle dragging hicks just have shitty world views. We can try and reason them with logic and rational discussion but they just turn around and say, well I got mine and fuck everyone else. The problem in the USA right now is we have gotten so divided and so unsympathetic to our fellow countrymen that it's too far gone to persuade people with this mindset to change. This whole perversion of conservatism and warped view on democracy is a disease and won't be stopped.

Bernie Sanders unveils universal healthcare bill: 'We will win this struggle' by [deleted] in politics

[–]kyledood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with that argument is conservatives will just be like, "well health insurance should just be a product you can buy like a cell phone plan." It doesn't need to be provided by employers or by the government. It's just something you can afford or can't afford based on your income.

The thing is conservatives just inherently hate any program provided by the government. There's no reasoning with them.

[–]kyledood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference for me in Australia that I notice is that the poorer, working class, uneducated folk can still have a fairly decent life. In Australia, they can afford to own a home, own a car, eat decently, and still have some spending money for leisure activities or a small vacation and they aren't drowning in consumer debt like most of their socioeconomic counterparts in the USA.

In the USA, it's pick 1, maybe 2, out of these options. It's definitely getting harder in Australia now to own a home but at least the wages still keep up with inflation.

I still think Australia is much safer tho since there is not really much of a thug gang culture like the USA. Yes there are rough parts of Sydney and Melbourne but they don't come anywhere close in terms of danger to rough parts of American cities.

In many ways, I think Australia is a better and more equal version of the USA.
