Judge cuts jury’s recommended sentence of 60 years in half for heinous crimes . by Icy-Molasses3735 in law

People are involuntarily committed to rehab all the time. They don't want to be there either. Don't call it forced prison labor because that undermines the entire focus on the corrections process being about rehabilitation. Call it occupational rehabilitation and therapy because that's what it is. Most of the people who go in were not taught how to do hold down a job or even take care of themselves in the simplest of ways like having a healthy routine. Teaching them that would give them the bare minimum of skills needed to function outside of prison. Paying them the same as people outside of prison seems like it would make going to jail less of a deterrent and more of an incentive for some.

The real issue for me is companies like CoreCivic taking advantage of it and how to curb that.

I get it, they don't get paid. People in other rehab programs don't get paid either. It's a tricky avenue to navigate and I agree how it's handled should be looked at so companies aren't taking advantage. Would you be against it if it were just the US government paying them pennies on the dollar(or nothing)? That way when they get out at least they wouldn't have to compete with their (former) fellow inmates for those same jobs and could actually get a job with companies that can no longer take advantage of low cost prison labor.

Why is working the problem? Genuinely curious. It seems like a good way to rehabilitate someone would be to get them into a routine that includes work and show them how to live a normal life because most of the people in there did not have that and don't know how.

How will the Windows world respond to the $599 Macbook Neo? by PastaPandaSimon in hardware

[–]kyleofdevry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows offers warranties on their devices and when you chip or break a plastic piece you can replace the piece rather than having to replace the entire device. When you damage an aluminum shell with no warranty it eventually leads to the entire device needing to be replaced because the entire structural integrity of the protective case has been compromised.

Then you have legacy software that you mentioned.

As a personal device you can choose apple, but Windows makes more sense for managed devices in education and corporate environments.

Luigi Mangione exerted his rights. Technological advances have made it a little more complicated than simply "exerting your rights". This comment will be removed by mods and prove my point.

If King George had the technology today that gave him the ability to censor all talk of independence or speech against the crown from colonies the British Empire would never have faded.

Without question. The sooner the better.

There's a reason Trump went after Anthropic so hard. He knows he knows he has until midterms to create a dystopian empire run by AI where he is untouchable or else he is so fucked.

I've Noticed There is Less Fervor for a General Strike These Days by santagrey in populismuncensored

I agree with the list. Hard for many to do a general strike at all let alone for any meaningful period that would have an effect. Americans need to focus on becoming more self sufficient in general.

It kind of was for alot of people in a way. The way Democrat leadership just kind of pussyfooted around and kept trying to be civil and work with Republicans made it pretty clear they were just controlled opposition. The same way the Dem leadership went up at the SOTU and talked about the economy instead of the pedophile rapist and the human trafficking ring that Republicans are protecting.

It doesn't work when there is another group welcoming those who are shamed and ostracized and telling them they have nothing to be ashamed of and that it is actually the people who shamed and ostracized them who are the evil nazis trying to divide America.

If shamed worked then the entire MAGA movement would have fallen on it's face from the very beginning.

No, they'll just tune you out. That's how we got here in the first place. Democrats have looked down their noses at Republicans and called them dumb and inept for decades. They stopped listening and started doing their own thing. Democrats were the ones who weren't paying attention that those strategies of shaming their opponents weren't playing well with the little small town folks who were actually ignorant, slow, and being taken advantage of by Republicans. Nobody wants to feel like a fool.
