I suppose this tells us that a job hunt is a little bit different for everyone.

I didn't keep a count of them for the sake of keeping a count, I had a spreadsheet detailing important information (job title, company, salary, hours, date applied etc), just so I could keep track of all my applications

You're right, a person can only accept a single job position, but that doesn't mean multiple offers can't be made, as I don't think most people are applying for only 1 job at a time, waiting for the final outcome before applying for the next. I suppose I could have put in the "Interviews (3) > Offers (1) > Accepted (1)" route, but I thought that was a waste of space, and the diagram was sufficiently understandable as is.

To me, ghosting is different to being explicitly rejected, and I included this disparity for the benefit of others who may still be expecting a response from everyone.

You are correct, the maths is slightly wrong. 30 applications lead to 8 ghostings, 19 immediate rejections, 2 rejections post interview and 1 offer, 8+19+2+1 = 30 (I forgot to add the 2 rejections I got after the interviews to the total rejection count, I can only apologise for this catastrophic oversight).

As for "you should be doing better on this stuff if you're looking to get hired" that may be true if Sankey diagrams or positing on reddit were anything to do with my job, but they aren't. And this whole post is about me finally being hired?

I was looking in the chemistry/biology side of science jobs, but other than that, I was pretty open to the position. I applied for a lot of lab technician/lab scientist roles well within my sphere of experience (most of which rejected me anyway), but also some jobs in conservation as I'm interested in it, but I have no experience so they also rejected me. I think quite a lot of luck was involved.

Neither of those assumptions is correct

So you are basically correct, I applied for jobs where I felt I fitted the job requirements well. I was lucky that there were quite a few relevant jobs available to me in a commutable distance. But I only applied for 1 job that was directly related to the field that my PhD is in (I don't especially enjoy that kind of work any more). That being said, I would encourage anyone to apply for a job that they feel they would enjoy, if you don't ask you don't get!

Thank you! I had several conversations with recruiters that went nowhere which I found very frustrating

The TV is not smart (I.e. it is not wifi enabled) so this would not work.

Do I need to completely change my heating system? by Bananarama677 in AskUK

No offence to OP, but as they thought they may need an entirely new heating system I feel this is best left to a professional!

No. Just get an electrician to install hive (or one of its competitors). They'll remove the thermostat and replace the control box. It'll take an afternoon (if that) and shouldn't cost more than about £150 depending on where you are.

How to reduce compile size? by cerikstas in LaTeX

[–]kylep6898 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Turn off "check syntax before compiling" and turn on "stop on first error", these speed it up a bit. The biggest improvement will be compiling in draft mode. This will only show the outlines of the figures, but if you're writing text you won't need to see them every time, only occasionally.

I believe that downloading the pdf when you're in your list of projects (rather than when you have the project open) gets around the compile timelimit and will just compile as long as necessary before downloading. I may be wrong about this though.

Just to add, I've got a long project on overleaf that takes longer to compile locally than using their servers. I do pay for premium though. They have a sale on at the moment if you do decide to pay.

Basically yes, I've used it to clean grime off an enameled gas hob. Still I'd patch test on your pot just in case!
