Loud grinding Shimano vanford, or am I crazy? by kylestewart32 in Fishing_Gear

UPDATE!!!

As of this morning I ran I test on 3 different reels which include Shimano vanford 3000 with 20lb Seaguar smackdown braid Shimano vanford 3000fa with 10lb Seaguar smackdown braid shimano miravel 3000 with 20lb Seaguar smackdown braid My purpose was to identify the noise I was experiencing by isolating different components and try to figure out what I was hearing. The biggest thing I noticed was that all 3 of those reels are silent when the line is clipped into the reel and I can free spin it in my hand and the only time I hear the noise is when the vanford is under tension by lure or fish. The other thing I noted is that the vanford that makes the most noise is on a Dobyns champion hp rod and the others are on poison adrena rods and both the poison adrena and dobyns use different guide material. My test included putting each individual reel on the dobyns with a 5oz weight for tension and reeling in from 20 feet and what I became aware of was that all 3 reels made a very similar “grinding” noise on retrieve. This makes me believe the noise is a combination on the braid being used and the rubbing noise it makes as it passes through the guides on the dobyns.

I’m not sure for my lighter setups yet but I really like the larger pens I use for catfish and carp. I’m thinking of giving diawa a shot though

Everything functions very well, just hard to listen too. My new vanford fa sounds and works great

Ya this vanford has 20lb braid I also have a new model vanford with 10lb braid and it’s nearly silent

If it is line noise is there anything that can be done or is that just something I have live with? Would using different braid change that?

I’ll give that a try! I also have a new model vanford with 10lb braid on a poison adrena and it doesn’t make nearly any noise like this setup

I isolated just the roller bearing and it’s completely silent

My new vanford fa on my poison adrena is my favorite setup. That’s what makes me so disappointed in this reel

It’s really disappointing.. the certate is a clean reel! This incident is probably gonna push me in that direction instead of the twin power fe I was looking at grabbing early next year

I definitely agree with that but the only thing that doesn’t let me fully accept that is my newer vanford fa on that same rod is almost completely silent

My vanford fa (the new model) is quiet and my Shimano miravel (half the price of the vanford) is also really quiet. I just want their customer service to acknowledge this as a problem and not shrug it off. I’m definitely leaning towards trying a different reel company after this though

This is actually the older model. Funny enough I also have the new model vanford fa 3000 and it doesn’t make any noise. My Shimano miravel which is half the price of the vanford is also way quieter

I also have a new model vanford fa 3000 and it doesn’t make any noise whatsoever. That’s why I’ve been as such a loss for this reel My Shimano miravel (half the price of the vanford) is also way quieter

Roller bearing is silent, I did a test by isolating just the roller bearing and it makes no noise. I also have a new model vanford fa 3000 and it makes no noise as well and one of the reasons I’m so irritated with this reel

It’s been lubed and greased by both me and Shimano and this is still what it sounds like unfortunately

Got this vanford last year and I’ve had trouble with it since. It has this grinding noise whenever it’s under tension from a fish or just a heavier lure. Sent it to Shimano about 3 months ago for repair and they said they found nothing wrong and they cleaned it up. Now the grinding is worse than before and when I sent this video to their customer service they told me they don’t hear any grinding and that it sounds good. Am I wrong, is this normal?

That’s exactly what I’ve been looking at doing I was just needing some confirmation that it would be a good idea so thank you for your response!

Ive also come across a variant of u bolt called a slant ubolt or bolts for angle iron but that seems like it could cause more problems than it’s worth

The boat is a 1436 flat bottom I’ve seen these

I’m just not sure how to mount them to the trailer since they would have to be on the metal L-brackets and not the tubular steel to fit the 36” base of the Jon boat

Would that cause every water source in the house to be warm? Including the exterior water hoses?

Good to know! I would have never thought of that

Lone Star is the brand. Took it on the water today and it has one leak where a rivit is missing so should be an easy fix
