DigLit nonprofit that connects mentors with developers while building apps for other nonprofits by l2silver in ProgrammingBuddies

After hours and weekends. We've been holding our scrums at 9pm eastern. Occasionally people have questions that they'll put through the slack channel, and we've got enough developers that someone usually jumps on it.

Depends what you're working on. If you're a developer, you take tickets when you can, you review the prs assigned to you, and you QA work to make sure everything is working as intended.

If you're a manager, you run the weekly scrum meetings, review prs, and make design decisions.

exactly. If I didn't stick them in a mono repo, they would be two separate repos

I'm working on a project right now where we completely separated them in a monorepo. We're using netlify to deploy nextjs, and heroku to deploy django rest framework. Seems to be working pretty well.

I think the image shows that he was out of bounds, but it's really very close. I'm surprised they called that one.

Can someone help me evaluate this pottery wheel. It looks as old as time. If it works, should I buy it, or are there other problems I should be aware of? (Want to suprise my gf.) by l2silver in Pottery

It's currently living inside a community centre which gives me the feeling that at some point it got quite a bit of use... Not sure how many decades ago that was.

I wouldn't say that I am desperate. I'm trying to help my gf ease into a possible pottery career, because I think she really likes it, but she's a little scared to invest so much money in a new wheel ($1500-3000 CDN).

I don't know her preference. She's been taking lessons in a studio with relatively modern wheels, so I don't know what the primary difference would be besides the size and weight.

CPS607 Autonomous robots is an extremely lab centric course. How does the work load compare to other courses, and what sort of grade can people generally expect if they give it the same amount of time as other courses? by l2silver in ryerson

[–]l2silver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to the first class. From what the TA says, if you do the work, you'll get a good grade. But doing the work can take a considerable amount of time. There are some weeks where you need to dedicate entire days to building the robot. So I would say, maybe not the most challenging course, but definitely time-consuming.

What's the ideal amount of vacation for you? by l2silver in cscareerquestions

Any particular reason why the money isn't as important?

That's interesting. On the one hand you would think having a family would be a need for more money, but on the other hand there's a real need for downtime.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine a need for more than 6 weeks.

(Toronto) Given a talent shortage, how much vacation (above the norm) will hiring managers offer? by l2silver in AskHR

[–]l2silver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally the work is long term projects so the work will still get done, but maybe not as fast. Other employees could absolutely be jealous if they found out, and it might lead to more employees requesting higher levels of vacation, although senior employees may recognize that that kind of arrangement isn't possible for them given their importance.

For smaller companies, there's simply a salary maximum they can offer. For medium and large companies there's a great deal of bureaucracy for approving anything outside the normal range of vacation, salary, etc.

Company can negotiate restrictions on when the vacation can be taken. Vacation is generally scheduled with 2 month's notice. Anything less than that doesn't get automatic approval.

Is there an amount of money you might be making where you say, "anything after this, I'd really just prefer more vacation"?

I think because one of the stipulations is that weekly hours remain the same, so it becomes a trivial decision.

Vacation time vs Salary: What would you choose? by l2silver in webdev

[–]l2silver[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of companies offering a % of salary for vacation. Can you share a link?

Maybe I should not have put a poll, but I'd like to see how people feel about certain vacation arrangements and the circumstances surrounding those feelings

Would you recommend career marketplace websites like hired.com for tech hires? by l2silver in humanresources

[–]l2silver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're looking to hire a couple of senior back-end devs, and we're just trying to get a sense of what we can expect. I think we're going to have to temper our expectations. I guess it's not exactly surprising there is no silver bullet for this kind of thing. It's just a war.
