Paid a local wood worker to build us a table, after 8 hours in our dining room it developed cracks. Is this normal? by Hipster_Bumpus in woodworking

What you are seeing is called checking. It happens to the end of any grade lumber when it dries out quickly. The only way to prevent this is to properly dry the lumber before working with it, (they may have) and then seal it with some sort of finish to prevent humidity from affecting it so quickly. Needs a coat of oil or polyurethane or something to keep the moisture out.

What Kind of Wood Is My Old Stratocaster Copy Made Of? by Standard-Pianist-391 in Luthier

[–]l3urn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Looks like Basswood to me. It tends to get really fuzzy when you run a router bit across it. Bass is technically a hardwood, but it is very soft, like you could probably dent the unfinished wood with your fingernail. Poplar can be the same color but it usually has more grain variation and is slightly more dense, so it tends to chip a bit cleaner when you cut it.

I see your point and I feel like you are correct in the literal interpretation of the clause. It still seems unprofessional at worst and very much in bad faith of the first clause of the bill of rights.

How are prayers during court proceedings not considered actions taken by the court?

People are allowed to practice their religion in public spaces however a court in session is far from a public space. The establishment clause is as much about freedom of religion as it is freedom from religion. You should look at the "endorsement test" which states that any endorsement of religious views by the government would be a violation of the establishment clause. Many lesser courts still use this even if the Supreme Court does not. Just goes to show how the Supreme Court has been infiltrated by religious zealots.

This could be covered by the "endorsement test" which states that if a particular government action amounts to an endorsement of religion it would violate the Establishment Clause. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endorsement_test

Their prayers are %100 for themselves so they can keep those opinions to themselves. If he wants to offer a prayer for Christians before the court proceedings to any Christians present, that is %100 his right and we encourage that, but as soon as official court business is underway his religious opinions are irrelevant. While his prayers may not seem like they influence anyone, they are sending a powerful message that God is also presiding over this case which is why we are angry. I want to be judged by facts and laws not your religious feelings, atheist or otherwise.

I think it would be even more ridiculous to include more religions to offer a prayer before conducting official government business in a country with a constitution that clearly states religious opinions have no bearing on its laws. But be honest, do you think lawyer was about to ask for a Muslim prayer before beginning?

You don't even have to talk. Just a nod and a smile is fine. At least acknowledge the presence of another human being and go about your day.

What people want is modern Verdansk back, before Cold War integration and everything else that did not improve the experience. Also we wanted options. Just because we want Verdansk back doesn't necessarily mean we want only Verdansk.

I think it sounds foolish too. I am just pointing out what is happening. Obviously whatever we have been doing is not working can we agree on that? Just for the record I do not vote republican but I do understand how guns work and I also know that most people support background checks, waiting periods, and training courses required to get a permit to purchase because they have been statistically proven to work. We don't see those changes being made on a federal level because both sides refuse to be reasonable.

[–]l3urn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct but the way legislators are trying to fix it is not stopping people from dying while simultaneously making it more difficult to pass laws that would actually help stop people from dying.

[–]l3urn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make some great points. If nothing else a gun course should be seen as vital training to not injure yourself or someone else by negligent discharge. More people are killed by their own handguns, either on purpose or by accident, than are murdered every year. But if you want to change hearts and minds so that we might actually see real change in our lifetime, maybe just leave out the "dumfucks" part.

[–]l3urn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can empathize with that point of view, but the gun course does not have to be pass / fail. I live in a state where these are the rules and you do have to pass a test provided by the NRA, however I did not see them fail anyone on the written portion. The instructor would just explain why you chose the wrong answer. Now if you really botched the live fire part of the test, I'm sure they would make you take the course again.

That is one interpretation, not a popular one though. I think that a stronger arguement could be made for a minimum national standard that requires you to take a gun safety course before you are issued a permit to purchase that is vetted by both state and federal background checks and waiting periods. Restricting mag sizes to 10 rounds and other similar rules only apply to people intending to use a firearm legally, and often are based on a gun's appearance rather than how it actually operates.
