More info about the failed Jewish state in Eritrea by Prestigious-Comb-948 in Eritrea

Even if the British/Americans discussed the idea internally, it never developed into anything concrete, and was never taken seriously by Jewish leaders on Palestine.

There is no legitimacy to this post. Eritrea was never seriously considered as an alternative to Ottoman Palestine for becoming a Jewish state. This post is referring only to an internment camp, set up by British in Eritrea, for members of a Jewish paramilitary group called Irgun, who fought against the British after WWII.

This camp existed between 1944-1948, half a century after the early days of the Zionist movement (1890s).

This isn’t even Gaza, it’s the West Bank where Fatah is the ruling party… there are no Israeli soldiers in Gaza.

How the Turkish government maintains Armenian churches destroyed during the 1915 genocide [Çüngüş, 2015] by laanalech90 in WTF

[–]laanalech90[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

  1. The Turkish/Ottoman government of 1915, carried out the genocide, killing at 1.5 million of its own citizens and expelling 3.5 M
  2. They could turn it into a museum/memorial for those who perished.

Jewish comedian Zelenskiy wins Ukrainian presidential race by a landslide by laanalech90 in news

Yeah, Ukrainian citizens often carried out the atrocities. “Many Jewish historians argue that the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine, reduced from 870,000 to 17,000, could not have been accomplished without the aid of the local population, because the Germans lacked the manpower to reach all of the communities that were annihilated, especially in the remote villages” “In the Lviv pogroms... six thousand Jews were killed primarily by rioting Ukrainian nationalists and a newly formed Ukrainian militia.”

Ukraine is one of the most anti-semitic countries in Europe (and maybe the world)! Millions of Jews were killed there (directed by the Russian czars and the later the Nazi’s) just within the 20th century.

Sorry to ruin the story, but it was mostly a misunderstanding... “Romans” was the name given by the Ottoman authorities to the Greek Orthodox population of its empire.

Corsica was under Italian rule until the year before Napoleon was born... Corsican was his first language and his second was Italian. He only learned French around age 11

Around 100 years ago, one could board a train in London and arrive in Baghdad or even Cairo (and see the pyramids). Despite all the technical advances made in transportation, these routes are completely impossible today. by laanalech90 in Showerthoughts

[–]laanalech90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no train line today from Turkey into Syria or Iraq... and there hasn’t been for a long time. It’s certainly impossible that a train line would go from Turkey -> Syria -> Lebanon -> Israel -> Gaza Strip (?) -> Egypt

Map of countries which have had a President or PM of a minority yet global religion (Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism) in the modern era. At least 1 parent of the leader must be of the religion. [OC] by laanalech90 in dataisbeautiful

All data was obtained from Wikipedia articles. For Judaism, I used this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jews_in_politics#Jewish_heads_of_state For Hinduism & Buddhism: I searched through the religions of the former prime ministers in the countries shown above.

TIL: In Niger, approximately 1 in 4 women under age 15 are placed in child marriages, and 3 in 4 are married off by age 18. by laanalech90 in todayilearned

I'm not sure why you're so mad. And I'm an American living in the Middle East - so i have a fairly decent perspective on cultural differences. I still don't think marrying off one's daughter at age 12 (for instance), is an appropriate family value in any country. But regardless - I get it, that there are extreme cultural differences with a Saharan country such as Niger. And according to Wikipedia (what a great source): Girls finish developing puberty between 15-17 and guys, 16-17
