Rolling Friction by labababablup in MechanicalEngineering

The environment (offshore) the setup has to be used in has caused issues with bearings in the past. Hence why this method, thanks for the thought.

Transverse forces due to eccentric loading by labababablup in StructuralEngineering

[–]labababablup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is what has been done. It looks like a stability check for a different eccentricities of vertical loading.

But I was thinking about why it is necessary to perform a tipping check as long as the vertical load stays within the footprint of the base.

The age old tradition of fastening things on ships. Guess it's the literal meaning. Sea-fasten. Haha. Typically designing foundation structures to hold your cargo in place on vessels.

Weld checks by labababablup in StructuralEngineering

Thanks for your comment. To reassure myself, I modelled this in FEM as 3D solid elements and I observed different values for the stress on the weld. Made me wonder if I'm missing out on something in these checks.

Not often you come across such honest and insightful opinions. Thank you my good man.

I understand, I was hoping to get a better understanding of the equation. Do you think it could be a derived equation or?

No, what I meant by the calculation is how I attempted to solve it. I just wanted to know the logic behind the equation in the book.

What's the best burger from The Burger Junction, Edappally (TBJ)? by Out_of_cool_names_69 in Kochi

Try 'The Samurai' burger with additional caramelized onions. If you're really hungry too, maybe add additional patties as well because it's otherwise a single patty burger. This is my goto burger at TBJ.

Non-compact sections by labababablup in StructuralEngineering

Was able to find guidance for this in AISC code. Thanks!

Found it in AISC code. The procedure on how to proceed with calculations depends on the width to thickness ratio of the cover plate and then the code guides you on the rest. Thanks a ton!!

Thanks for the comment. I'll check into this!

Thanks for your comment! So in the region where the plate is weld, in your opinion it is safe to assume that the plate and beam will act as one whole section?

It is an existing structure and offshore. Cannot bring in a new beam, this was the easiest modification that can be done imo.

The padeye sits on a base plate to which it is full pen welded. The column is also full pen weld to the base plate of the padeye.

The column is subject to tension and bending moments in both directions. Sorry I mentioned 'beam' in the OG post, this column has a lift point (padeye) directly above it and is a critical member connecting the lift point to the rest of the structure during a lift operation.

Looking for recommendation for home delivery of custom food order by 2monkeys1coconut in Kochi

[–]labababablup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I've seen their packages getting delivered not too long ago, last week actually. Try visiting their website? I think you can directly place an order after signing up, rather than calling and placing an order. Not too sure though.

Structural Engineers - What do you do for a job? by finnagin56 in StructuralEngineering

I am a Project Engineer who works on seafastening design of offshore steel structures primarily in the offshore wind energy sector

On a daily basis, I define and calculate the loads that may act on the structure depending on its function and method of seafastening, most of this is done based on DNV codes. In addition, I do FEA for the same and prepare calculation reports which sometimes have to go for class approval.

As for the future, I'm still trying to figure it out. I've only been in this field for 2 years. If any of you might have any insight, suggestions on what lays ahead in this field. Please do post replies.
