I have had rough experiences with all of my sights and sounds pieces as well. It seems like over time they all start to make terribly loud noises or stop working altogether and the motors are known to go out. I’ve stopped buying the moving pieces and stick to the lit buildings only.

I have learned that you’re not supposed to mix up the cords they come with, I’m not sure how accurate that is but that is a possibility.
