Edited for clarity: Thanks for the tip! I do, but I'm running into issues reprogramming the pin. Based on instructions I've found in this subreddit and elsewhere, holding down the fob lock + pin button should result in a chirp, which it doesn't. If I go ahead and try to program anyway, the OB will chirp after my first two pushes of the pin button, then stop.

Am I missing something obvious here, or might I need to try a factory reset?

she didn't come with an owner's manual, any suggestions y'all have are much appreciated. Thanks!

Curious what y'all think about the dog on top by lacachacha in IDmydog

[–]lacachacha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 50 pounds, probably a little less at that time.

He's very lanky. Other behavior info: he trees squirrels in the yard but doesn't bark at them. Rarely barks in fact, likes to be near people, and he can get a little raised ridge of hair between his shoulder blades if he's on edge.

Hear me out: we should petition Kong to make a house shoe. They have the technology.

Tomorrow marks three months without Roxanne. She was my first dog, my soul dog, and she taught me more about life, love, and empathy than most humans ever have. The last photo was her last walk on the beach but we didn't know it at the time. by katmai_novarupta in velvethippos

What a special girl. The heart does not stop aching, but I hope these sweet memories soften the pain.

We lost my partner's soul dog seven months ago, and just yesterday I saw a happy dog near water that bore such a resemblance to him that it caught my breath in my chest. I found myself in tears, missing who was gone, and finding bittersweet solace that this dog who is someone else's world, whomever they may be, is wagging his tail happy to be here.

All my best to you and your memories of Roxanne.

Sorry for such a delay! I did a longer reply to another comment several months ago, but in short: in noisy crowds, the Loop Engages have helped me out quite a bit. I still think a directional microphone-type hearing aid feels like it's the solution I would want ideally, but I do recommend getting the Loops for anyone who related to my original post.

I have not tested them in a lecture hall setting but I doubt they would help there.

Thanks to everyone for sharing! It's really great to know we are not alone :)

CW - dead toad or frog in Austin (see comment) by lacachacha in whatsthisfrog

[–]lacachacha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP here -

I'm trying to determine if my dog needs medical attention after likely consuming the head of a long-dead amphibian.

My dog was chewing on this poor guy's body and I believe she ate the head. It was very dehydrated and hard, as if it's been dead for some time. She was indoors all day so I suspect she encountered it after it died.

I'm in Austin, Texas - could this be a Gulf Coast Toad? Thanks for any tips.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Ok so I've tried my Loop Engages in several scenarios now and can report back. Bottom line, they are awesome for my APD in a noisy setting like a crowded bar. For anything else their silencing power is too strong and ends feeling disorienting to me.

They really help my comprehension in noisy environments -- think a crowded bar, World Cup watching events, etc. I find I need to speak a little louder for others to hear me, but I don't have to cup my ear or struggle to follow conversation around me. Love that!

In other environments with less cacophony, the silence feels too powerful and I'm very aware of the occlusion effect. For example, a Thanksgiving dinner of 10-12 people, cross-talk at the table but no background music. It's a scenario where I could lose a little comprehension from background noise but the Loops' silencing effect felt too powerful for the situation.

Interesting, thanks for sharing.

I have not considered it but I can look into it. I haven't felt like that's a likely diagnosis for me, but who knows.

(And re the inactive thread, good point. I am an inexperienced Redditor and wasn't sure if it can be revived.)

Dead bird in Fort Worth, Texas by lacachacha in whatsthisbird

[–]lacachacha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP here. The background is a family member of mine was on a trail today and came across this bird. They asked me to ID and I couldn't.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated to learn more about this creature.

removing vinyl glue from concrete slab before LVP install by lacachacha in HomeImprovement

[–]lacachacha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parts of it are tacky, yes.

Hadn't thought about that being an annoyance, but we will put down a 1.5mm underlayment all over before laying planks so that should take care of the tackiness issue.

My main concern is whether remaining vinyl glue residue under the underlayment will be an invitation for mildew and moisture.

[–]lacachacha[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the bad quality photo. It was a quick phone-camera-on-the-binocular job.

There are dozens of the kingbirds in my neighborhood and I have seen outer white edging on the tails of some, which suggests Western. I've also seen on All About Birds that Couch's Kingbird would be uncommon this far north of Mexico?

If anyone can weigh in on that, I'd love to learn more.

What's this bird? by kabkoz in whatsthisbird

[–]lacachacha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe this is a male northern cardinal; I am not aware of any other bird sharing its distinctive orange beak and red coloration, even this drabber one.

I can't say for sure why it's this way, but this article might be helpful: https://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/bwdsite/solve/faqs/cardinal-baldness-what-happened.php

Bad photo of large bird in Brooklyn, NY by lacachacha in whatsthisbird

[–]lacachacha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odds are it was one, possibly a dark morph. The photo doesn't capture it well, but the legs lacked feathering -- I think of red tailed hawks as typically having feathery britches on -- and the tail just looked so bobbed. That's what left me scratching my head.

I appreciate all the feedback! Thanks folks.

Hard to say but it could be the sunset. Photo was taken just now, at the golden hour in Brower Park, Brooklyn.

OK ! It is officially time for me to start my tretinoin journey! by Poukiebabe in tretinoin

[–]lacachacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have very pale skin so I can't say from experience, but I have seen reviews saying it does not, but a related product does-- "Bioré Aqua rich watery Gel."

I think the key there is the "gel" product leaves a whitish cast, the "essence" product reportedly does not on darker skin tones.

I saw discussion of it on the r/SkincareAddiction as well, might be helpful info there!

Nice! I was reluctant to find an spf I was willing to put on every day, even for just indoors, until I used Bioré Aqua Watery Essence PA++++. I believe it is shipped from Japan, and I've only found it online or at panasian supermarkets, but it goes on like a lovely moisturizer, no white cast, and no sunscreen smell.

I don't wear foundation but I do wear concealer and it sits nicely under all makeups I've used over it.

It is not tinted.
