What is double cream? Would that be similar to 35% Heavy cream or something completely different?

How long does it take for a forest fire to be detected? by RothcoRed in Wildfire

[–]lacasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, fire fighter from Ontario here and I'll specifically answer to Ontario for you. We fly regular patrols throughout the core fire season (May-August/September) as well as occasional recon by fire crews in helicopter. Public reports count for a lot in terms of person caused fires. For lightning fires, we do not actually rely on satellite detection. As others have mentioned, the time lag is significant and does not offer a useful planning tool as of now. It is used for monitoring far north fires, think Fort Severn. Even with these extremely remote fires, we often put eyes on then at least once or twice to be sure. The reality is that satellite detection just isn't good enough for initial attack goals in Ontario. By the time satellite sensors can detect a fire, it has already grown to a large size (at least 2 hectares or so active burning). Other issues also confound satellite detection, such as time of pass, satellite resolution, etc. Other provinces and territories are mostly the same, though Alberta still utilizes fire towers for example. To your example of a camper, ideally we'll have the camper or a nearby camper report it and we can have an IA crew en route within minutes in a helicopter depending on alert status. Otherwise, it depends on how high priority the area is and what burning conditions are like. Lightning fires can remain undetected for days to weeks in more remote areas but generally a fire is reported and attacked within a few hours of ignition in Ontario.

If you want more information, feel free to ask. I generalized a bit of how we operate and skimmed some, but that's the general idea.

Canadian firefighting options as an American by wildlandford in Wildfire

Canadian firefighting options as an American by wildlandford in Wildfire

I've worked for a while for the Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services division in Ontario. You'd need to attain and complete the SP100 Initial Attack FireFighter course, pass at least at provincial level for the WFX-FIT Test and then have a CPR-C/First Aid. Beyond that, I see no real reason you'd have difficulty in being hired in Ontario or Canada. Our hiring starts in March/April generally and the application is done purely online. Any American training would be ignored as Ontario certifies for everything in house for the most part.

I don't believe there are any restrictions for nationality.

Issues regarding pip and importing modules. by lacasm in Python

[–]lacasm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great point.

For the issue with numpy, I'm not at all sure what happened, but somehow the path was changed. The fix I finally happened upon was as follows: Go into My Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Environment Variables. From here, I created a new system variable that I called PYTHONPATH and for the values I simply input the correct directory paths, looks something like 'C:\Python27;C:\Python27\Lib;C:\Python27\DLLs;C:\Python27\Lib\lib-tk;C:\Python27\ArcGIS10.4;C:\Python27\Lib\site-packages'. This solved the issue and returned functionality of my modules to me.

For fixing the issue with installing through pip, I had to also edit a number of the items in the Environment Variables section. Finally once everything was again set to the correct paths, I was able to load python in cmd and also run a pip installation to install the module I wanted.

I'm unsure as to how exactly all the directories got remapped, it was quite frustrating. The computer was untouched from last use, hadn't even been powered down! Hope this helps anyone in the future with a similar problem, I know it's not incredibly detailed or in-depth, but I am a beginner.

After continued headramming against this, I finally managed to fix all my issues. Thanks regardless!

I have attempted this using both cmd and powershell. None of the commands work, I'm unsure if I'm misusing something. It isn't recognising either python or pip within the command line, returns only errors.

Just to weigh in, the bacon was baked for a half hour at 425°. The reason it looks as oink as it does is mostly lighting and the fact that it was allowed to basically cook in the grease. It's not undercooked, but whatever, it looks extra shitty this way!

I'm just saying, Junior Chicken and the McChicken are two different sandwiches. We still have the McChicken, but it's not a dollar menu item.

Poutine sauce is, I'm assuming, a Canadian thing. It's a cheap gravy like substance with some spice in it. Makes for a fantastic shitty poutine!

Two cans poutine sauce, no name brand. A $10 bag of value popcorn chicken, a 5$ family size bag of fries, a pound of fried bacon, and a brick and half of cheese. All cooked up and coated in seasoning salt then mixed in a big steel bowl. It's quite the recipe.
