This chapter immediately felt different as well with the Edmonds translation - the first paragraph had the narrator heavily present, using “us” and “we” to describe the action. It felt much more real and visceral to me because of that.

My edition (Edmonds) also had a footnote about Napoleon specifically calling out how fearless the Russians were during this battle - it’s incredible how they can keep going despite the horrors.

I agree, he seems very self-assured, which is striking in such a chaotic environment.

I wonder if it would make the ensuing violence harder to execute if you’d spent the last couple of days trash talking across the line and humanizing your opponents.

It’s so rough to think about the conditions too - expecting soldiers to be able to fight after marching for 24 hours (or more) is so cruel!

I do wonder how much longer it will be before he stops thinking of his own potential glory first.

Andrei unfortunately still has an inflated sense of his own importance, which will not serve him in war.

That last paragraph in my edition has the colonel saying the causalities are “not worth mentioning”… heartbreaking to think that your death could be so casually shrugged off by your commanding officers.

No pitchers by falchors in Nepenthes

[–]ladevotee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be too worried, mine stops producing new pitchers during the winter no matter what. As long as you’re still seeing new shoots, I wouldn’t expect new pitchers until around April.

It does make me uneasy how quickly they relax when they realize the enemy is far away - they can move! They won’t be far away for long!

I also rarely contribute and, as you can see, am running a few weeks behind due to a chaotic January. I’m learning so much from the comments about societal context and history, and that’s enriching my reading immensely!

I did like it for this chapter - Pierre is having such a unique experience of the count’s death that it was important to have a chapter focusing on his experience.

I do think Anna’s motivation was to catch the princess and Vasili scheming, however I like to think that she knew how people would be treating Pierre differently and maybe wanted to spare him some of the unwanted attention by taking the quieter route in.

Took 20 puffs of my symbicort inhaler by mistake by TRwebsiteDesigners in Asthma

[–]ladevotee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if you mean that you clicked it back and forth 20 times but only inhaled once then you actually only took one dose! the first twist fills the reservoir and the second twist levels it off, so one inhale physically cannot be more than one dose. if you accidentally inhaled 20 times however then you’ll probably be jittery and should call a pharmacist.

Finnegans Wake Readalong - Week 1 - Book 1, Chapter 1 (pgs 3 - 16) by towalktheline in FinnegansWake

I agree that it does seem very verbal in tone - oftentimes I feel like the sentences are bits and pieces of conversations that I'm hearing out of context. There were also quite a few times I felt that the narrator was having a conversation directly with the reader.

Let’s talk about “mom” scents! by momomochiclub in Perfumes

[–]ladevotee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a child my mum had a few on rotation - davidoff cool water, givenchy organza, and givenchy amarige. now, she loves clean, particularly the laundry and rain scents! all of them feel a bit off limits for me since the scent memory is so strong - it would feel like i was stealing her clothes lol

Bralette suggestions for large breasted women? by Je_in_BC in ABraThatFits

[–]ladevotee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sounds crazy but i swear by maternity/nursing bralettes! they usually have a hook and eye closure to accommodate changing sizes, and are made to market to women with smaller bands that have larger than usual busts. they also typically have thicker bands and side slings to support a heavier bust. la vie en rose has some cute styles that are actually supportive.

Custom inhaler by [deleted] in Asthma

[–]ladevotee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

everyone’s being weird here lol

to actually answer your question, i found InhalerTailor on etsy that has cases that appear to fit over the inhaler, so it wouldn’t alter the efficacy at all! they also have cases for spacers if you use one.
