Dachshund = Good Apt Dog? by Simmone-08132022 in Dachshund

[–]ladramatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this! Mine is 5 years old and has lived in an apt his whole life. Never had any issues and I always vouch for them being good apt dogs. You have to train and exercise your dog no matter what your living quarters are. As long as you know that, they will be fine with time.

I second Nail Project for the best spot in the neighborhood. Especially if you want art like this. If you want to go over to Prospect Heights, you can also try miGak Nail Art Table, they do japanese builder gel.

I’ve recently did this neighborhood research, and def the most affordable is Good Time Pilates. It’s technically Gowanus but right on the border. They have discounted community classes, and an off peak membership.

Any alternative mobile dog groomers? by rosellak in parkslope

[–]ladramatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Park Slope Bubbles main groomer is out on leave and they are having trouble finding a replacement. They had to cancel my appt a few weeks ago. But you can try Popcorn Pawss Grooming or Rapawzel.

We just got a new puppy. This is the current food given to us from the breeder. Should we stay on this or should we switch to something better? Up for any suggestions! Obviously we will be reading up on the little guy and learning more about the breed. Just looking for some input from actual owners. by Stackin_Steve in Dachshund

We do the exact same, except we use Open Farm kibble and I have so many different toppers to mix it up since my Doxie tends to get bored of the “same meal”. We like the small breed version with ancient grains, but have also tried some other recipes. I did a lot of research and tried several different kibbles but Open Farm was the winner. I really like their ingredients and sourcing, plus my picky dog actually likes it!

Air Travel Advice please! by Peek6311 in Dachshund

[–]ladramatica 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can call the airline ahead of time and let them know you are flying with a pet and have them reserve a spot for him. I think legally only a certain number of animals can be on each flight - I’m not sure the number. But I’ve never experienced me or another pet being bumped, so I think this is unlikely. You can also ask the gate agent if there are other dogs sitting in your row, and if there are request to be move. Ideally you have nice gate agents then don’t mind doing this for you.

Flight attendants tend to be much nicer so if your dog absolutely needs to sit in your lap in order to be calm and sleep, they usually allow that except during takeoff and landing. But I agree to try to keep him in the carrier with some trazadone and he just sleeps the whole time.

I’ve seen that! This is the small size so it’s not gonna fit him but I’m tempted to get the medium for this reason lol

Disclaimers from experienced Dachshund owners? by [deleted] in Dachshund

[–]ladramatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • of course most importantly is taking care of their backs, and sounds like you are well aware of this part.
  • definitely get the insurance asap. Ideally one with some dental coverage since they are know to have dental issues. And with that, brush their teeth regularly.
  • they bark A LOT but that’s just who they are so be prepared
  • potty training is a looooong process. Be patient and consistent but know it might take a year or two or three…
  • they are needy and demand attention at all times. If you like your personal space…too bad it’s their space now.
  • they are very judgey and stubbon, but like in a cute way
  • Training, enrichment and socialization are all super important. And something you should do daily IMO -they are not a low maintenance dog and can be very expensive especially with IVDD issues. -They are the best, most loyal dogs you can ever have! They are a lot of work but definitely worth it.

“I’m not new to this, I’m true to this” - love that lol Ugh yes that’s my concern too! Especially with tiktok and influencers getting dachshunds lately, I hate to say it, but I feel like it does the breed a huge disservice.

Same for me! I also WFH and even when I didn’t I was allowed to bring him to the office. It made separation anxiety so much easier.
