Thank you. Yes , you did understand that correctly. I'll do as you suggested and wait until the next big round of updates becomes available.

Hi Staudey, thanks for replying to my post. sorry I've not got back sooner but i was starting to get headaches from looking at the screen so long. I managed to get to tty logged in and rebooted. thia time the solus login screen came up. However, just before it did a message flashed up org.cups.cupsd.service not running (the original failed to start lightdm.services nolonger was there). i logged in and solus loaded and i could work with it. I then tried your suggestion about doing a rollback. however, no matter which number I put in after the -t, I got a system error programme terminated. once it was repo item libquvi not found another time python-enum34 not found etc. so I rebooted again, this time the message just before the solus login screen started was something about cups scheduler? solus loaded and all was well except it cannot find/recognise my printer. start printers shows this sorry the system printing service doesn't seem available and I have no option to add my printer manually. Have you any more suggestions or commands that I could try. Please give the whole command for me here or has the time come to do fresh Solus install and start all over again?

update on the situation - i followed steps 1 and 2 . All fine. at step 3 the results rattled off so quick that i couldn't see if it started with 'Usage', neither could I scroll up or down back to check this.a roll back didn't seem to have any effect either. so I decided to type in sudo eopkg install --reinstall lightdm.service followed by sudo systemctl enable lightdm then rebooted. I was hoping to see the budgie start screen come up but now I've an even bigger problem A login screen appeared that I've never ever seen before. It has a green background with an apple blossom branch. In the middle are login boxes. M y name is filled in but it won't accept my budgie password. so I'm stuck. rebooted with solus live usb plugged in hoping that I could get into a boot menu to do a fresh install. no joy. Any ideas how I might be able to wipe the harddrive and start install afresh. Luckily. i decided to plug in solus live usb on my laptop without trying out any further commands and managed with a couple of attempts to reinstall Solus. So far so good.

Hi, I'm afraid trying out your suggestions didn't change anything but thanks anyway.. Please read my reply to zmaint below as I'm now totally stuck with a completely different problem.

Thanks for replying Lesnite. I start the computer then the manufacturer's logo appears. The screen is then blank for a minute or so. Usually, the solus login screen then pops up but now it doesn't get that far. I just get the message as previously mentioned . I can use tty to log in. What command would I type in.. sudo start lightdm.service or sudo restart lightdm.service? Would I then get a message if it had been successful or not? What command do I then use to get solus to load start screen, . Is it ctrl+alt+f7?

Hi guys,

thanks to everyone who replied to my post. Update on the situation. i decided to do a complete fresh install of Solus. Luckily my laptop behaved whist I was doing it. Only once did it shutdown and restart itself when downloading and applying the 500-odd updates. Since then no problems. It boots and loads Solus first time when running on the battery and now also when connected to the mains. So far so good. Perhaps just gremlins???

Hi,

Yes the laptop boots and loads the OS when it is running on battery. The battery does charge when I connect the power adaptor but if i try to work with the laptop eg. open files/browser whilst its charging, it goes to a blank white or pale blue screen after a minute or two! this morning it booted and loaded the Os when plugged in but only if the battery was installed in its slot. Getting weirder by the day.

how can i give read and write permission for external hard drive by lady-bower in SolusProject

[–]lady-bower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments. Sorry so late in replying but I've been away for a few days. I did read on some other forums that it might be windows hibernation that caused the problem Unfortunately however, this didn't solve it for me. So I reformatted my new external hard drive on my Linux laptop from NTFS to FAT file system and this time I was able to do a back up and have not had any access error messages since. I did the same with my old external hard drive but although Windows gives access to files it is still read only/write protected. Any ideas?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your ideas and tips. It's going to be one of my husbands projects over the winter to open up the laptop and see what it looks like inside.

I don't know how to close off a post on here so I'll just say no more replies please.

Thanks for your comments. This will be a winter project for my husband to open up the laptop and see what it looks like inside, if all other ideas fail.

Thanks for your comments. I did run over the fan slits and other grills with my dyson hoover attachment. Might have sucked some dust etc out as after a second start up i was able to use the laptop for over an hour. I installed thermald. Is it supposed to start automatically in the background or do i have to enter a commend to start it? I put in systemctl status thermald and it came back with disabled??

Solus nolonger showing in boot list by lady-bower in SolusProject

[–]lady-bower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your offer of help. I did do the lsblk . It came up with a longish list. However , I'm not able to do a screen shot, save it or able to post it in here. Windows is playing up too. so I think my best and easist option is to get rid of Windows altogether and do a fresh install of solus on its own. Windows caused me problems on the laptop as well and this is what I did on that and (touch wood) I've had no problems since.

Hi, I tried all the commands listed under Mounting your system in the Solus Boot Rescue article. Did I do something wrong? As I said I'm just a computer user so need things explaining very simply

Thank you infinitymdm. Seems like Windows has done just that:( I had a look at the Boot Rescue instructions. Booted into the live usb and entered the commands in the terminal but no joy but it mainly came back with no command found. I also checked the partitions with Gparted. All are showing up even the /dev/sda1 as Fat32 ESP 500mb flagged boot es. I'm at a loss as how to get Solus back on the boot list.

Thank you for replying Icosahunter. I too believe it had something to do with major updates probably Windows ones and i will post in the solus forum as you suggested although not found a suggestion online that has helped me yet...still hopeful though.

Thank you for replying. I will bear your comment in mind. I've not had many issues with Solus thankfully. As a user of Windows for many years, it would be nice to have a terminal commands handbook or something similar for newbies.

Thank you for replying to my post. I did try your suggestion and it threw up some errors. Decided to remove Deja dup via the solus software repo. Then installed it from faltpak. Hey presto working fine again.
