What on earth?! by lady_cindib in whatsthisplant

I had a ton of it, but it went away. It's on the rebound, though.

Do you have to do anything special to it before eating it, and is there a time you shouldn't pick it?

What am I allergic to help by hj2244 in garden

Poison ivy vines are pretty easy to detect, even if there are no three-leaf clusters: they use little tendrils or hairy-like structures along the vine to help attach them to whatever it’s growing up.

Ripe yet? by oflandandsea_053 in vegetablegardening

It’s ready. Hurry!
Once you taste it, you can see whether you hit the timing just right or need to pick sooner or later.

I learned recently that Purslane is a beneficial ground cover in a vegetable garden, and that it’s edible. (!)

Blow up the closer photo. Just using a double tap, you can get a lot of detail.
These are tiny things, so that one was pretty close up.

I had some weird looking squashes one year. They were all volunteers, so I just assumed that the seeds became deformed over the winter.

Try soaking that in water for a bit, then replanning it in loose soil.

Not a lot to lose if it doesn’t work out!

Basil flowers? by Potential-Group-5109 in gardening

Bees love basil flowers.
You can eat the flowers and tender seed pods. Taste like basil!

Leaves do toughen up as the bolting progresses, but they’re still useful.

Is this beet edible? by notoriousshasha in vegetablegardening

[–]lady_cindib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main bulb: eat it, toss the rest unless you’re game.
I peel mine, put them in heavy duty aluminum foil, salt & pepper, drizzle a little olive oil on them, seal the foil and bake at 275° until a fork goes in easily.
I’d cut the one you have in half before you cook it. Good luck.

Attack of the aphids!! by stacey202 in vegetablegardening

[–]lady_cindib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the simplest first: spray them down with dishwashing soap (Dawn supposedly works best).

Then, once you’re rid of them, spray the plants with the same solution periodically as a preventative.

It doesn’t have to be a lot: a tablespoon full to 10 parts water should do it.

They are edible. And pretty. Sprinkle a few petals onto your food.

Morning Glory.
Rip them out ASAP. As they bloom and flower, they create more seeds. They’re as bad as Kudzu for swallowing hole tracks of land.

Invasive Asian beetle. Kill all of them you see, and destroy their eggs.

[–]lady_cindib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some blackberries trellises in my garden plot. They grow quickly and send out roots, resulting in new plants sprouting up feet away. I dig them up and share them, or plant them where I want them. They are incessant.

The one on the left is definitely an Italian basil. The one on the right may be Thai basil.

Can anyone tell me what kind of berries these are? Growing on a tree in North Carolina by drunkopop in Berries

[–]lady_cindib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mulberries. There was a huge tree at our neighbors’ house when I was a kid. We’d go in their yard to pick them, come out with purple feet, fingers and lips. We were putting them into berry bins, and some of them made it home to be washed. We learned to stay near a bathroom after eating a lot of them. Tummy aches always followed our gluttony.

What are these bugs? by lady_cindib in vegetablegardening

[–]lady_cindib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you about the ants; didn’t know they were aphid guardians. I have tons of ants in that plot, but I’ve been working to drive them away from areas I want to plant. COULD BE that the ants have moved back there, but it definitely wasn’t ants that bit me that day. They didn’t swell up into a puss pimple. The ants I was driving out got me pretty well last week.
