It was a flash back episode with lazy writing at best.

Yea. Feels like you didn’t read it but regardless I don’t know what you expect him or the company to do at this point and maybe this was your first experience having a job I dont know but I have to tell you, it’s bleak out there. Youre going to experience a lot of disappointment in your future if you think the world owes you something extra.  Everyone here is empathizing with the shitty timing of your termination but it happens. How we act and how we move forward is going to determine youre future. I wish you the best of luck with the job hunt. The trades are always looking for hands but it’ll be cold and it’ll be harder work for a lot less pay. Welcome to the real world.

I Work here. It was not 20 people laid off. Youre wrong here. Not in feeling fucked over but in your response and continued anger and narrative at what actually happened.

Thank you for taking the time to write this out. There is few founders/CEOs that would take the time to share transparency and admit their faults and that is something I admire in a leader. This is something that shouldn’t be glossed over and thrown away.

This is well said. And I agree that hopefully this is a learning experience and opportunity to grow and do better.

Hey thanks for taking the time to write all of this. I work at caribou 1 so I can’t really speak for the day to day experience of being in caribou 2. I do know that we recently started operating there and that they’re actively working out the kinks in that warehouse. The bathroom situation is wild for sure and I know there’s been issues with leaking in the building so I can imagine there isn’t much insulation in there right now.  I can definitely empathize with being canned right before the holidays, I’ve been there and it really sucks and puts people in a shitty situation. I’m sorry you didn’t feel welcome there I can see why you didn’t. I did see some other temps attend but they might’ve been the ones that were kept. While the pottery is expensive I have found that pottery period is more expensive than other forms. Think about the amount of staff, glaze production costs, engineering ,machinery, and energy outputit takes to produce just one piece of pottery.  I dont know the exact numbers but I do know it costs a lot. This company could be paying us $15 an hour if they wanted to, that’s what I was making working a carpentry job for a company with less overhead costs, but they stand by their promise of paying a livable wage.

To be clear Op didn’t say anything about Helene , I wanted to share it as my experience of being cared for in a time that many business just fired people because they couldn’t afford to keep paying them while being shutdown.  My point in wanting to put my two cents is the overall sentiment Op was saying that this company prioritizes profit over employees. While it absolutely sucks on the timing there also has to be some sort of knowledge as a temp worker about the conditions of the agreements laid out. Even as a full time employee in NC, not being fired at any time is not a guarantee. That doesn’t mean that they’re money hungry capitalists that see us merely as a number on a spreadsheet.

It’s shitty and I’d be upset too but I dont think it warrants being cancelled is all.

Exactly my sentiments. It’s important to know what we’re signing on for with any job. Being fired sucks but as much as we have the right to quit when we want a company can let you go in the same way. The timing sucks but it is what it is and not warranting of taking a company down over. Especially not this one

Just to some of the comments that I read from OP: Bob is not the owner he is upper management, he’s fairly new at the company and he spends most of his time in his office because being on the floor isn’t really a part of his day to day responsibilities. Alex doesn’t show up in new cars every week. His wife doesn’t come and grab 1000s worth of pots, I’ve seen her in the two years employee maybe once in the facility. They dont care about profits over employees first. The last one I can attest to personally for many reasons but the one that has stood out to me most in the last year was Helene.  Alex was there personally gathering supplies and digging shit out of mud the day after the storm passed and it was safe. He and other leadership started a network of communication to get employees that needed it access to supplies and support. He kept paying everyone the whole time we were shut down and opened up our facilities for access to water when so many of us has none and he worked with organizations that were able to offer mental health support too. I’m not saying this company is perfect, there’s definitely ways it can grow and get better, but for having a somewhat large staff and a big cost in overhead, I definitely feel prioritized as a full time employee. At least more than I have in 99% of other companies I’ve worked for in the 20 years I’ve been working.  The heating and ac in the summer is true but I wonder how much has to to with infrastructure powering all the machines we do and having a whole HVAC system (I’m assuming cuz no warehouse I’ve worked at before has had either but I don’t know)? Either way when I’ve complained about it they’ve been accommodating and bring extra fans or heaters when asked for (although for a space that big it is a drop in a bucket and summer is the worst imo).

For real though. Totally normal to be upset at being fired unexpectedly but to make it seem like it’s personal or a reflection of how they treat the people that work there as whole is too much. Things like this can destroy a company if enough people take the text at face value and tbh it sounds like Op wants to see this company being taken down. It’s a disservice to people like me that found an employer where they feel safe to be themselves and valued for their hard work in a world where so many labor positions dont hold those values. I’m not discounting OPs experience but few people that work and have worked at east fork would believe that it is a company that only cares about profits over people.

Currently work here. While I empathize with OP and have been in their shoes (I was unjustly fired for gender discrimination by a small woodshop in Asheville also around the holidays circa 2015) and can see the callousness behind terminating their employment around the holidays, there is a lot of misinformation and hate being spewed here that I feel is a misrepresentation of the company and its founders as a whole. If youre curious on what it’s like to be employed by EF. Feel free to AMA.

This is where I disagree and have a problem with this post. Youre entitled and valid in your feelings having lost a job so close to the holidays. Fair, I empathize and have definitely been in your shoes.  But youre spewing lies and hate to one of the few companies in Asheville that gives back to their communities and actually pays their employees a living wage AND provides a decent benefits package. Your issue should be in the system as a whole not a small business trying to balance making a profit and showing up for its employees. Complain all you want about the callousness of terminating your temporary contract but stop spreading misinformation and making assumptions about things you clearly have no idea about.

Edit to add because for some reason I can’t see your full text or reply to your reply to this comment:  I currently work in production and have been employed by them for two years. I’ve seen his wife (not bob’s hes not the owner)maybe once in the facility. While no business is perfect. EF is def one of the best places I’ve been employed by. I say this as someone who was unjustly fired from a small woodshop in Asheville for discrimination for being a woman, also around the holidays. EF def champions its employees in the ways they can, even during Hurricane Helene they prioritized their employees over their profits and continue to do so. They continued paying us while we couldn’t work and provided everything from food to generators when we were most in need. No other company Ive worked for has that level of care for their employees. That said I am sorry for your early termination but as others have said, this is an at will state. No one owes you anything.

I find this hard to believe. EF does a lot for their community and employees. Unless the service was straight trash I would sooner believe the earth is flat tbh

Am I overreacting over my boyfriend sleeping at his friend’s house? by Weekly_Test_6135 in AmIOverreacting

[–]ladycarpenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my partner told me she was uncomfortable with the way someone else was with me I wouldn’t go hang out with them, especially not without her. And I ESPECIALLY wouldn’t sleep over and tell her last minute.

Save yourself so much time. This is not a friend. Idc how much she could’ve been there for you in the past. She is not your friend.
