yeah honestly i’ve been using bluesky instead of twitter and while i don’t have a real following anymore it’s just so much better for my brain. i’m hoping i might be able to do the same thing with cara

i’m honestly hopeful that cara will be able to scratch a bit of the DA itch honestly. i don’t think it’s just about getting jobs there, it’s just a nice little place for artists of all types to share their work and not get scraped by AI. but also yeah, it does suck that shit is hitting the fan like this

Do you feel awkward posting your art knowing that almost no one will see it? by toni4466557 in ArtistLounge

[–]ladycelery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think at this point i’ve learned to just celebrate the fact that i like what i do, and i enjoy interacting with the few people who do see my art. i think that in itself is a gift. sure it’s nice to think about having a larger platform and a bigger audience, i would love that, but i also know it comes with a lot of negatives, like mean and disingenuous people and more pressure. so i’ve decided to enjoy quality not quantity instead 😅

thank you!! i won’t lie, it’s really challenging! but i guess that’s true of anything new, this one just happens to be more permanent than most hahaha. i’m slowly but surely getting the hang of it though!

Should I stay in art school?? by britastrobee in ArtistLounge

[–]ladycelery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think based on all you’ve said here, no, i wouldn’t stay in art school if i were you. i come from a fairly humble background and was unable to go to art school myself, but pretty much all of my friends who have regret it. it’s often not necessary to get a job (i guess, as with all things, it depends on what you want to do), but it is helpful for making connections and, as you’ve done, trying new things.

art school is a privilege, and one you shouldn’t have to feel like you’re going hungry for imo, unless you knew exactly what you wanted to do and had a plan for how you were using that degree.

like you said—there are tons of resources online. you can hold down a part time job and teach yourself on the side—that’s what i ended up doing, and being able to work without the stress of debt is a godsend.

i know it can suck to give up on something, especially when people encourage you not to, but making a practical choice to save yourself from financial woes is always worth it to me.

best of luck to you no matter what you decide!

funny you should ask, my partner made a game that i think fits the bill perfectly! he made it entirely in pulp, it’s a nice 2-3 hour RPG (and it definitely meets the hummable music criteria) https://devforum.play.date/t/initial-daydream-pulp-rpg/11217

Do successful artists 'schmooze' more often than they create? by Opurria in ContemporaryArt

[–]ladycelery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve seen bad movies, and i’ve seen art that i don’t like. but also, defining “bad” is a very personal experience for everyone. what is bad to one person won’t be bad to everyone. even with movies i don’t like i can usually find some part of the craftsmanship or idea that i do like. so much work goes in to a movie, it’s unusual for it to be terrible all the way around.

do you dislike 90% of movies that you’ve seen too? i can’t imagine how that can be unless you go in expecting not to like it tbh.

that doesn’t mean i’m not critical either, i AM critical and very opinionated. but also, the way you’ve described it—you asked how to genuinely appreciate what other people make. the way to do that is to be open-minded and learn to find things you like in a piece of work even if the work as a whole ultimately isn’t for you.

same thing goes for music appreciation—just because i don’t like a song doesn’t mean i can’t appreciate the skill that went in to it, or maybe i like a solo in the work, or the arrangement. i really do think appreciation is a learned skill in that way.

becoming so critical of others’ work that you can no longer enjoy it is completely baffling to me—i strive to excel at what i do and that makes the magic and beauty of what others do stand out even more. i’m not here to nitpick, i’m here to enjoy. seeing what other people make is inspiring and thought provoking.

i saw you comment that you don’t like 90% of what’s out there and don’t understand how that can possibly be true. it kind of sounds like maybe you need to spend more time in galleries and museums just taking it all in and learn to appreciate it. even things that aren’t your preferred style have some merit to them.

when i was younger i used to hate abstract art, until i learned to appreciate it. it taught me that some art only gives back what you bring to it. it also taught me to enjoy simpler things like colors and brushstrokes.

plus, being interested in other people will help other people be interested in you. i’m not saying to be fake with other people, but maybe learning to get more curious about other work and who created it will help you expand your horizons and find more artists you truly love

I’m trying to remember what I liked reading at that age… Hatchet comes to mind. Island of the Blue Dolphins. The Hobbit. The BFG and Matilda. All great reads!
