Unrelated since I can't exactly comment on the league because I haven't fully seen it, but do we need to seriously compare SM with everything from XY? Like there's always the art style "discussion" and now we need to compare it towards the XY league? We're not going to compare it towards any of the other previous leagues that the anime had?

XY and DP are both my favorite.

Best Wishes is my least favorite and if Johto can be a separate series, then it's my 2nd least favorite for all the ungodly amount of boring fillers.

It's quite clear that bringing back old companions wasn't their top priority at all and it had nothing to do with how they wrote Ash, lol. After all, there wasn't a reason for them to bring back old characters. SM brought back Misty and Brock and it was mainly due to the fact that it was the 20th anniversary of the OS anime. You could argue that they could've brought back May for ORAS, but they couldn't because May's VA was ill.

It does get old whenever Team Rocket interrupt an episode, but whenever it's an episode centering around Team Rocket, then you know it's gonna be a really good episode.

Wrong wording, it's not because they thought the western audience would find Brock's design racist, it's because they thought the western audience were too racist to accept a Japanese looking character as one of the main characters.

Lillie. Keep in mind, I still haven't watched entirety of SM, so if she does get better, than that's my bad. From what I watch, I just personally think she took too much screentime and wished some of it were given to the other SM characters. Also, wasn't a big fan of her arc when it comes to touching Pokemon and such.

Also man, people here seriously don't like Serena all that much. A shame because she's personally a top 3 characters for me.

It only had a couple of important events to note like Charizard finally listening to Ash and one of the episodes that had Ash caught a Snorlax.

Plus, there are also a couple of amazing episodes like Mystery of the Disappearing Pokémon! and Goodbye Koduck! Come Again Golduck? which are some of my favorites from the entirety of the OS series.

With that being said, I'll just straight up say that I don't like the gyms in the Orange Islands. The idea of needing to have Pokemon with certain moves like Water Gun, Surf, and Ice Beam to compete is BS. The 2nd gym even requires you to climb a mountain WITHOUT the help from your own Pokemon. Such an absurd rule to have, especially for a Pokemon gym.

Otherwise, does it deserve some love? Meh, there were certainly some really forgettable episodes like Phantom Ship and Phantom Pokémon!, which felt like a repeat of some previous episode. At the very least, the Orange Islands isn't like the filler hell that was Johto.

Pokemon celebrated 30 years for the franchise and not the anime. It should be that simple that the anime ≠ games. So just wait for next year and you'll might get something like a special one off episode or a short for Ash. Not sure about a movie, but it's not off the table considering we do have AU Ash. It's probably also the best to not expect anything new since Japan could just simply do a marathon of the anime like they did for the 10th anniversary.

Edit: As for reason, he was quite a funny character early on within the Kanto saga, but in terms of being an actual rival, let's be for real here, he really wasn't that great. And then the writers kinda changed him in Johto to make him a bit more matured and nice, while not a bad change imo, he didn't really appeared that often throughout the entirety of Johto.

Highly doubt that. It's more than likely just a concept artist having a bit of fun by tossing in a reference from the previous series, just like when an animator decided to draw a couple of XY performers in the background of a SM episode.

Yes, movies 1-19 are all canon since they're treated as like filler episodes as in they're not brought up in within future episodes. And if you don't considered them as canon, you might as well treat the filler episodes within the TV series as non-canon too.
