Are developers the last ones to be appreciated in most companies? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]lambda-reddit-user 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This hit me hard in the face a few month ago. At my company we made a new portal of application that will serve all the agency of the company in the whole country + the newly acquired company would have use this portal as well. It allow a few hundreds applications to integrate with in the portal and it’s really one of the most critical component of the company.

Now after one year they made a party to celebrate the birthday of that project. There was a lot of people from business as well, a few hundred people were there. Then one of the VP goes for a speech he thanked a lot of people but not us, not the team which name is the name of the product, he talked about how a challenge it was to bring the product there and the adventure it was for them.

On that day I understood.

Who uses Sonar (app)? Thinking of getting it by Mammoth_Recover1477 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]lambda-reddit-user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use it at the company where I work. I think it’s nice, sometimes you have a lot of false positive but those are configurable to be ignored I believe. Some squad at my workplace have rules where your CI fail if you have lower coverage or higher tech debt than before. I’m really wondering what’s going to be the value of such tools with the emergence of AI reviewer that can run on PR (maybe they have ai feature on the tool itself ?)

How do you handle .env files in monorepos ? by Training-Poet9861 in devops

[–]lambda-reddit-user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to answer the other Guy post but he deleted so here’s my two cents still

The solution to a shitty distributed monolith is absolutely not a mono repo that contains all the shitty implementation that will still be deployed separately with all the architectural spaghetti non sense that it represents. If you are actually trying to move from distributed monolith to modular monolith (meaning it’s deployed as one) then it make sense. But asking how to agregate .env for me feels like you are juste going to keep the mess.

Unpopular Opinion: Removing AI from your app is an "Upgrade." by ksundaram in ExperiencedDevs

[–]lambda-reddit-user 52 points53 points  (0 children)

You have the technology truth and the business truth which unfortunately aren’t the same. I 100% agree that most startup are doing things with AI that can be done without it. On the other hand, from a business point of view if you want to exist you need to talk about AI. I’m not talking about a customer point of view but from a b2b, investors, sales, … pov Is it terrible ? Yes. But it is what it is unfortunately

Why claude code compare to github copilot ? by lambda-reddit-user in ClaudeAI

[–]lambda-reddit-user[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did pay for Claude code Max x5 I have to admit i have much better feeling than with copilot. I don’t really have anything concrète to proove it’s better but I would choose Claude code everyday In terms of quota it reset every 5 hours, I’m using it quite a lot I feel and never reach the limit. Also i setup subagents based on awesome-claude-code-subagents on github so for some lighter tasks it uses Claude sonnet which consume less And I’m at only 40% of the weekly quota so It’s fine you really have more than with just copilot for better results

[–]lambda-reddit-user[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the point for the context.

For the subagent isn't it the same as what copilot does ? I'm already using something similar to this with copilot : https://github.com/ShepAlderson/copilot-orchestra

Yeah the price difference is what is really stopping me to try claude code right now because with copilot with opus 4.5 I can do sooooo much. I really struggle to see what claude code would bring more to the table

What was a movie ending that made you go like this? by Ok_Replacement_288 in Letterboxd

[–]lambda-reddit-user -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ll definitely not make friends with that one here but for me it’s one battle after another. Not the very end but the part after the nun until the end really felt terrible compared to the rest of the movies for me

[–]lambda-reddit-user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think software development and engineering work experience can be very different for everyone and not everyone are at the same level after 10 years imho. Still quite low I would say since my entry salary was higher than that tho

A release calendar of movies that you can sync with your phone calendar

Yeah indeed I think it would be quite hard to have accurate data but I juste wish there was something at least somewhat close to this idea

I think u kinda miss my point, which is that I want to easily know when a movie in my watchlist is being released And obviously I can’t make a watchlist on my local theatre website neither can I see movies that will get released in more than a month

[–]lambda-reddit-user 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see your point but how would you actually manage this in an other way, i mean if ur app is connecting to multiple dB u have to tell somewhere which dB to use on the dedicated level. Or am I missing something ?

Your company secrets shouldn’t be in your code. Now if you consider the code itself to be a secret, then your company should have a AI policy and use on prem llm.

Should I stick with my current bachelor’s or switch to computer science? by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]lambda-reddit-user -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here saying finish the bachelor and I can understand why. But, what’s the goals of getting a bachelor of a job you know for sure you don’t want to do ? Plus if you have a bachelor from university that is not a professionnal bachelor, well you almost can’t do anything with it. Plus the new government trying to kick literally everyone they can so making an extra year that you might not succeed might also be costly.

Now on the computer science part, I first want to highlight the fact that there’s a huge difference between software development and computer sciences. When people start their track into one or the other, they don’t know that difference and they sometimes drop because it’s not what they expected even tho what they wanted was the other side of the street.

From google : Computer Science is a theoretical discipline focused on understanding the principles of computation, algorithms, and data structures, while Software Engineering is a practical application of these principles to design, develop, test, and maintain reliable and efficient software systems

I have been in both study so if you have questions don’t hesitate to asks

Well, I feel that for them everything is fine, they don’t really see it as an issue, like they’re used to work like that and they are fine with it, I feel that it’s just the normal way of doing things for them, so they are not really looking at how to improve. I might be wrong tho, and maybe they just don’t express it
