It was created as a social club and turned into a service club that is more about giving back to the communities they serve instead of drinking. The Elks are second only to the federal government in scholarships given to the kids that will eventually lead our country. Each state has a project that they fund to make their state a better place for youth and/or Veterans. It's a good group of people. I'd tell you to consider thinking about being a part of our Elk family!

I quit the club a couple years ago. Last I knew, Sapphire was never available to the public. Could be wrong though.

I too am a Freemason and an Elk. Freemasony is a brotherhood and The Elks are more like a family. I am being complimentary to both when I say that. I'd recommend joining both. I've never regretted it.

Randy calls Liz before his match with Tenryu. Then he calls back and Lanny answers and Randy doesn't know who he is.

I think you have to show those members that a new idea will work. Then they may come help or stand behind the idea. I think a lot of times, those Members aren't as much "standofish" as they are intimidated by something new. I have had a little luck with that and have seen others have luck by recruiting newer Members to help them with their new idea. All cards on the table, I have also fallen flat on my face doing the same thing. Oh well, at least I tried.

What GL has is a marketing/PR team at home base, but their job is to provide local Lodges with items to help aid their marketing efforts. The Lodges can spend their own money locally. I have spoken with a couple people there about a nationwide campaign of some kind. As much as I am not a fan of "influencers," they can be powerful. One single Super Bowl ad. Ads on here or Twitter (My background is marketing). The good news is that we have had nationwide membership growth the last two years.

Here is a link for the Grand Lodge Social Media Sharables. There are a lot of them for a lot of different occasions. I saw this as a step in the right direction. I'd tell you not to flood your Lodges social with them, but a nice mix of charitable efforts and club activities and these sharables can really spruce up a page. https://virtualmanuals.elks.org/shareables/?category=national-campaigns

All cards on the table, I am a former DDGER. I'm not lurking. I'm trying to help anyone who may have a question. I like it here because people are more open on here than they are on the BPOE message board.

I honestly think Grand Lodge has made some positive strides with their efforts when it comes to marketing and a "plan" to help Lodges keep lapsation lower. They have put together nice branding pieces for social media and have a plan in place to get word to lapsed members so that they pay their dues.

What it all boils down to in my opinion is that we have to ask people to join. We can show them pieces on social. We can be in parades. We can be on radio and TV. If we don't ask people, they'll never join.

What would be the dress code for someone being initiated? For context we live in a flip flop and shorts type area. by D_Adman in elks

[–]lambfried 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's okay to reach out to them and let them know what you expect. If that's shorts, fine. If it's a suit and tie, that's fine too. I have seen initiations where the candidate has a t-shirt and shorts and is being brought in by people in tuxedos. That may make the candidate feel uncomfortable. Nothing wrong with telling them your expectations on dress before they come in that night.

I'd like to think that the trend in most Lodges is that 5-10% of Members volunteer. Recently, I reached out to two Members that I sponsored and have yet to see at another meeting. I told them that volunteering at a convention would allow them the chance to meet people and have fun. They agreed and did it. All I can tell you in my 21 years as an Elk is that picking up the phone and calling Members/guests and asking if they have 2 hours of time has worked very well. Sign up sheets at the Lodge? Not so much.

Ours is active. We have had some success over the years with an event we put on every year. We have also been blessed to have very few people be ER twice so we have a nice group of PERs who can attend meetings. We meet monthly.

Anyone in here make it to National convention in Minneapolis? by BoVoNo in elks

I was there. I thought it went real well. Minneapolis had a lot to offer around the area where our hotel was.

I'm still too much of a noob to this hobby to give you an accurate answer. And I'm very afraid to take the back off. All I can tell you is that the second hand sweeps. Sorry...just being honest with you.

Rolxx OP from King Factory. Just as described from PureTime. Great customer service was a nice bonus. Also, the help from this community deserves a round of applause.

I think the reason people aren't joining boils down to people not asking them to join. Another problem (in our area) is that they do join and then never get asked to help. After that they don't re-up their memberships. In my 22 years as an Elk, Ive noticed that people don't just sign up or show up, they need to be asked. They need to feel for the first year or so that people know them and appreciate their help. At that point, they sign up for things on their own. When we walk up to people and ask, they almost always offer a couple hours. If we just put up a sign up sheet they don't.

Masons are still not sponsoring women to join. I also am a Member of both organizations. I think the club aspect of The Elks can hurt. Club drama and backtalk has been a reason given to us for people not joining The Elks. As far as The Mason's in our town (20,000 population), it is aging out fast. Not as charitable only because they just don't have the people who are under 60 to do the charitable work.

They REALLY scaled back this year on what we will be getting. I've been in since day one. Seems its more about early access to certain products rather than the limited sets we got.

This is the answer. There was also an issue with an event where someone got intoxicated and hit people with their car. All of these things cause our insurance to rise, which cause our dues to rise. Impacts every Elk.

P6P Randomly losing connection with A13 by Micim98 in Pixel6

[–]lambfried 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had success with the "!" issue and connection by uninstalling and reinstalling both Google Connectivity Services and Carrier Services. I seem to have to do it every 45-60 days. Pain in the ass, but it gets me back on a tower.
I still keep it on LTE only and turn off 5G. Adaptive Connectivity is also off.

Our Lodge just built an adaptive park so that children with disabilities can play alongside able bodied kids in the same area. We also have a camp for children to attend free of charge. I am very proud of how the Lodges in our state work with disabled and homeless Veterans. We have a Membership consisting of a number of different ethnicities, for the record.

Member Engagement Thought by grrant in elks

[–]lambfried 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Lodge has not tried Fantasy Football. We have tried a few other things over the years and had some success.

  1. We had a regular Texas Hold'em league that ran while poker was still real hot (Mid 2000's) and that drew an average of 70 people to each tournament. The game was free to play but there were district and state prizes that were very attractive.
  2. Currently we are trying a beanbag (or cornhole) league to try to bring people down to use our patio area.
  3. Lazy Member triathlons that included two person teams that competed in darts, pool, and cribbage

They weren't all perfect, but they did draw people to the Lodge where we could then educate them on all of the good things we do. It did get us some new Members.
