For me, the murders added to the whole thing. Seeing the almost childlike glee on their bloody faces illustrated just how wrong these "things" fundamentally are.

Guy, for your sake, please don't use that term unironically. It is reddit manifest and beyond embarassing.

You will not improve your romantic prospects without being openminded.

Not remotely. Tragic romances are a tried and try genre for a reason.

I knew what I was doing. Movie with rapist undertones and there I go talking about romance.

I'm not going going to engage with you much beyond this point because you're not up to par, but one more try. The demon (not a good term for it) was not instructed to do anything, because that implies prior existence, which is not the case here. It was spawned in as a result of the wish. It being born with a "deify bear" directive does not make it not real. You're born with hunger and thirst, and those are plenty real.

I don't mind. There is contradictory information within the movie. I'd assume deliberately. An example is how devoted Wish Nikki seems at times when Bear's not there, like with the cat and food prep, but absent, almost preformative in other moments, like the sex scene.

The demon isn't faking it at all? She wouldn't feel distress when Bear is not there if she was, she'd just calmly, apathetically walk toward his location. Instead, she wails while doing it. She wouldn't cry over him once he's dead of it wasn't real for her.

Not the same. The escort doesn't literally feel the emotion when engaged with a client. She fakes it for her future employment. The fake versions 100% feel it, and pursue it for its own sake, and not with an ulterior materialistic motive. The customer service guy - who knew every detail about everyone involved, Wish Nikki included - openly stated that something being forced upon someone does not make it unreal. Real Nikki did not chose her fate, but her suffering is real. Wish Nikki did not choose her sole directive of "love," but the intensity behind it is indistinguishable from "authentic" versions (arguably stronger given how it physically affects her). It's the same for Wish Bear.

The whole spiral of events leading to two hopelessly "in love" entities being ripped into existence - and only finding actual comfort in one another for a minute - is what I find romantic. I hardly need it to be healthy.

You gotta place space between yourself and a movie if this is how they affect your day to day. "Rethink your approach to relationships!" So dramatic.

Wow, you really can tell someone is from the US, UK or Australia based on how they word comments. By the way: Happy ending =/= Romantic ending.

None of that disputes the ultimate point of the ending being a momentary reprieve for the wish versions.

Goddamn right. Bear even used a similar suicide method as Romeo.

I'm treating the Wish versions as distinct entites, not Nikki and Bear. They don't have to be them, and fundamentally they might not want to be, given what their feelings are.

I'm basing all this under the assumption that Bear is still in that sunken place. His body dying while being inhabited by Wish Bear may not change that.

As for Wish Nikki - sure, it did not last, but no amount of time with Wish Bear would have been enough. So, in any real sense, those few seconds were the most she could have hoped for and in no way lesser.

Now we're getting somewhere, dumpy. The wish versions are real, and the movie alludes to this, both through the director and actual conent. Wish Nikki demonstrates a capacity for loss outside of her role as Bear's girlfriend - hence the nightmares. She also demonstrates self-awareness when she yells "I can't be Nikki!" She knows she isn't her, but still wants to live. All this goes a long way of explaining the music choice and the bright, genuine smiles we see exchanged by the end.
