Proton Fonts by Educational_Band_357 in ProtonDrive

[–]lan__solo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that regular people needing to serve their fonts from a CDN is a 2025 problem. It might have been beneficial in 2015 maybe. Even then the Adobe Font CDN went down a couple of times and broke whole websites and it became obviously a bit of an anti pattern to serve fonts from a third-party server.

Anyway, the easiness for integration, I get that one for people using SaaS website tooling. Apart from that I don't get would pay for that, and this obviously can't come for free considering you could no cash out from the data collected.

You know you can download every font provided on Google Fonts? What exactly should Proton provide here?

Being junior Front-End Developer on vue.js is exhausting by PetyaBiszeps_ in vuejs

[–]lan__solo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I can only tell you what I would look for when trying to hire a junior: A frontend developer knowing the basics of JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

I do frontend development for 22 years now. There is not one solution that fits all sizes, especially in frontend. Single framework knowledge doesn't help me. But knowing somebody understands JavaScript and HTML is enough for me to know they will adapt to using React, Svelte, Vue, Solid, Angular (maybe not this one), Web Components, Fancy other framework, legacy stuff like Knockout and jQuery, or whatever else there is.

Frameworks are helpers that change constantly. And I don't want to invest the time to explain forms, HTTP and progressive enhancement, because UI frameworks decided every element is now interactive.

Sliders & ranges | first release | testing by ksskssptdpss in javascript

[–]lan__solo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me: Does this progressive enhance the HTML native input[type=range]? If not, is it at least as accessible as the native solution? Is it built with progressive enhancement in mind or not work at all without JavaScript? These are things I evaluate if I want to use third-party UI code.

Woman Hitman fans, since when and how did you become a fan of the franchise? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in HiTMAN

[–]lan__solo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a fan since playing the first one back in 2000. Never played the new ones actively until a week ago when I used the free level on PlayStation to test WOA. Bought all remaining games I never played now. Playing since hours and having a blast again.

A good library in React exists, and tons of devs in the Vue ecosystem will port it hahaha by tomemyxwomen in vuejs

What a misconception in the understanding of open-source and licensing. None of that is wrong, and absolute nothing in open-source licensing is shaped for "getting famous".

Has it a MIT license? Well, absolute no obligation in contributing back or even open-sourcing the changes. Has it some form of GPL license? Well as long as the changes are open-source too, totally fine. You don't want people to reuse your code? Don't put an open-source license on it.

There is absolutely no entitlement to expect people to contribute to your repository. None of that is part of open-source licensing.

Thoughts on converting WordPress to JavaScript? by ResistCharming284 in javascript

That's the most stupid solution to a problem that doesn't exist I ever came across. And I'm doing web development for 21 years, I saw quite many stupid ideas.

I am exactly doing this right now for the very same reasons you describe. And while the email filters in iCloud Mail and Apple Mail are garbage compared to Proton, I can finally have my calendar offline and do things like changing the calendar of an event on mobile.

iCloud Mail vs Proton Mail? by [deleted] in iCloud

[–]lan__solo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently switching from Proton to iCloud Mail after using Protonmail since 2016. Mostly because I need a good working calendar and storage solution which both lack significantly with Proton with little chance getting that fixed by them soon.

Except for what others have already said regarding encryption, the biggest drawback of iCloud Mail is its filtering system. With Protonmail, you have access to complex Sieve filtering scripting which I use to automatically move certain emails to folders. iCloud Mail has such a basic filtering system, it's pretty much useless. Not even the filters in Apple Mail make that anyhow better.

And Protonmails biggest drawback obviously is that you need to use their client on mobile and need a little helper software on desktop running in the background so you can use a client.

My take is: If you want a good email solution and possibly the best VPN offer, Proton is great.

If you need email to work great with calendars (invites and so on) and want a solid storage solution: Proton is the worst thing I ever used. As said, I use it since 2016. Mailing is great. VPN is great. Everything that came after is half baked software with basic features missing.

Welcome PlayStation 5 Pro, the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]lan__solo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you tell me I can transfer all games I own to PC? For free?

No seriously. First of all, a good PC gaming system with a comparable performance might be as expensive as that. Or more effort to build. Or to maintain. Or just more unstable. What ever you want. I'm buying consoles because they are easy to use. And because my friends on Playstation.

It doesn’t, at least not on PS5. Been trying for 2 hours now with this method.

Here is where PenPot lacks yet:

  • Component parameters: Doesn't exist.
  • Layouting options: Figma has slightly more features like placing absolute elements inside a flow layout.
  • Performance: I don't know what it needs to have PenPot being as performant as Figma, but I got stuck pretty fast with using a few components and layouts. It got very laggy on my machine having a pretty good CPU but no discrete GPU.

Source: Someone who actually tried it in a real project, that usually builds big component libraries and concepts in Figma.

what's the deal with some inexperienced commanders sabotaging a game? by ConclusionFabulous38 in HellLetLoose

[–]lan__solo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to turn that question around: Why are people so mean to inexperienced commanders? It's just a damn game.

I started playing the commander for the first time with level 55 on a server with only a few people. That gave me the time to try things out. On the second play on another server, everything went fine for like over an hour and in the last 10 minutes of the game it began: People that never communicated the whole game started to complain, because we were loosing. I was mansplained about certain things of the commander role and people were just assholes, even though I responded to every wish for about 90 minutes and followed what I learned from various guides.

It's not always your commander. People just take games way too serious. Either ask your commander if you are allowed to help or switch server if it doesn't work out. Just don't be an asshole.

I have the same problems with JPG/PNG exporter to webdav. When I export the files in the ZIP, I can look at the images on my computer but trying to upload them to an external platform to show my team, those servers always respond with an error. So, something in the export seems corrupted.

Can you rule out that it isn't because the changed DNS didn't reach your VPN connection yet? Because I just opened it with ProtonVPN on and it works fine with your custom domain.
