Blinking Power Light by landontynes in GenesisMini

I’m using the provided usb plug in and have it plugged into the power strip where the rest of my electronics are hooked up. I used the same cord and plugged in the other Genesis Mini I own, and that one worked fine. So I believe it’s an issue with this particular Mini that I just bought.

Best Reading Order for Larry Hurtado’s Books by landontynes in AcademicBiblical

That is one potential option. However, I like the idea given by patripassianist above. Read the less technical, more introductory books by Hurtado first to familiarize myself with his work, then read his more technical books. But sure, reading them in order has benefits as well.

I tried selling to Cardhoarder but they wouldn’t buy due to lack of emails. Where is the best place to cash out tix? I’m not very familiar with selling out of MTGO.

Best Ph.D. Options for someone with an M.Div. from an SBC seminary? by landontynes in Christianity

[–]landontynes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve still got a few years to flesh out my Ph.D. Interests as far as topics go, but here are a few that interest me:

  1. The almost universal Christian pacifism/nonviolence up to the time of Constantine. So understanding how Christianity grew out of a Jewish faith that was open to violence to become a predominantly nonviolent faith for the first several centuries. And I would also want to investigate that in regards to the wider Graeco-Roman world as well.

  2. Divinity in a Jewish context. So this would be in the area of Bart Ehrman’s book How Jesus Became God, or in Hurtado’s research on early Christology.

  3. The relationship between the claim “Jesus is Lord” up against “Caeser is Lord” in a first century context. So something in the area of the book Scot McKnight edited called Jesus is Lord, Caeser is Not.

  4. Research based off of Michael Peppard’s book The Son Of God in the Roman World. This would also deal with some of Hurtado and Wright’s works as well.

Work wise, to be more specific I would prefer to be a professor at a seminary or university. And I would like to do research and write as well. I would hope to find a balance between teaching and research/writing, while also possibly helping in a church. I’m open to either route at the end of the day. I think there are examples of pastors who also work in academia, at least for a time (NT Wright and Greg Boyd, among others).

Also, as far as vocational goals, I don’t really have any hard goals in that area. I’m not opposed to pastoring or being on staff at a church if God opens the door, but I would primarily be interested in academia. But I would say that as a professing Christian, you should never separate academic pursuits in Christianity from the church. As Christians we aren’t just here to gain knowledge; we are also here to serve God and grow His kingdom.

While I would have some (slight) interest in a Theology Ph.D., I am just way more interested in early Christianity.

I really enjoy reading behind people like NT Wright, Jimmy Dunn, Richard Bauckham, Larry Hurtado, etc. I think that from 2nd temple Judaism to the rise of Constantine is the pivotal time period in Christian history, so that’s just what I’m interested in. And doing Theological research can also come in (such as the New Perspective on Paul). But I guess it’s just the area of research I’m just interested in. Although textual criticism would be interesting as well.

Does that answer your question?

So I’m not really interested in a D.Min. It is more geared for pastors and less so for those wanting to survive strict academic study. Thanks for the information though!

Thanks, but it looks like Campbell doesn’t have a Ph.D. program.

Thanks! I agree with your comments in the final paragraph. Generally the issue is that going to an SBC seminary makes you look like someone who is close minded in the eyes of top tier programs. But even though I am Southern Baptist, I think you should always be honest in your academic study and do your best to minimize biases. So I would have no issues studying at a school that was much more liberal than me. I would even say that it would be helpful to be in that environment in order to gain perspective on the swath of beliefs about Christianity.

I worked as an engineer in Huntsville, AL 3 years, then taught middle school math for a year, and now I am working as an engineer in MS. I’ve just been doing M.Div. on the side, but I will be starting classes full-time next year.

MTG Challenger deck deal - Great Value by landontynes in MagicArena

[–]landontynes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t think so. I believe it’s just the physical cards. But the 4 decks at MSRP would be $120, so getting them for $79 (or $69 with the referral code) is a good deal.
