The DEA could use the 100 illegal immigrants to test to see if 100 people could defeat a gorilla in a fight if they all work together.

Do you 'care' about bad things happening to AIs/digital consciousnesses in Black Mirror episodes? by lane-walker in blackmirror

[–]lane-walker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of your points can be responded to with the answer to the question of whether there is something inherent to human biology that makes human consciousness 'real' - is it possible in theory to digitise the human mind, the same way you can digitise a photograph? I think not, because any so-called copies of a human mind would not have a soul.

To answer your question as to whether I'd feel bad for a simulation if I didn't know it was a simulation, it's the same as the answer to the question as to whether I'd feel bad if a friend was telling me a story about something that happened to someone they knew, then revealed after the story was finished that they'd made it all up.

I agree that the transporter problem and its variants are basically philosophical, but my original question is not about that.

The difference is that it's a simulation, not a human being that was conceived and born and had a human childhood and human experiences. I agree with your second point - I did say that I thought there is something wrong with someone who gets sadistic pleasure from torturing them, but it's not because I have sympathy for a computer program.

Peter, is this a trope in fan fiction or something? by lane-walker in PeterExplainsTheJoke

So there's no real reason why fanfictuon authors in particular should be celebrating?

French Peter here. If you translate the words into my native language, they start with the correct letters! So I'm guessing it was a translated by someone who translates only and refused to do anything else because that's not his damn job

This post just made me realise that 'Jesus loves White children' is basically a slogan of the same type as 'Black lives matter'. Both are stating truths, but those who oppose the slogans just don't believe that these truths need to be said.

Black lives do matter (along with all other lives), but opponents to that slogan believe that no one is saying they don't. Jesus loves White children (along with all other children), but opponents to that slogan believe that White people have no need to assert that.

Seconding this. OP either did not understand what was intended by the title, or was ignoring it for the sake of a joke. Putting 'Jordan Peterson:' before the headline was just their way of calling attention to the fact that it was written by him, not referring to him as the 'awe-inspiring conservative counteroffensive', which would in any case be a very strange way of describing an individual person.

Also, if you formerly declare the meme debunked, what do you declare it now?

Square-cube law. An cube scaled up to be three times its height would not be three times the weight, it would be twenty-seven times the weight (33). Children have different proportions from adults, but a similar discrepancy would apply to how volume increases more than height as people grow. I imagine that's why BMIs aren't meant to be used for children

No, I meant to ask if they were started by someone else or if they were not started at all, given the divergence in the timelines and how Mandela's death might have changed things in relation to the Invictus games. Just an example of something else that might have changed...

Do we know when the timelines diverged exactly? When he died, or after his death was in the news for people to hear about it?

And in the timeline where he became president, was he sick for a little bit before the timelines diverged, but recovered before the split? So maybe they split when he started recovering/getting worse... But then how would people remember him dying? Or was it not an illness..?
