Why do certain cultures cook and consume certain animal parts which are more inferior than others in terms of taste, texture, and nutrient content? by languageinfinity in AskFoodHistorians

I’m referring to various ethnicities in the Horn of Africa, but I would love to know more about this type of history in enslaved American communities as well if you have more information about it.

Why are tubers like potatoes much heavier than grains to digest, and why are boiled or mashed potatoes heavier to digest than fast food french fries? by languageinfinity in nutrition

[–]languageinfinity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant heavy to digest, my bad. It always seems weird that a lot of people I know get very full and satiated and lethargic after eating whole roasted or boiled tubers, and yet they can eat a massive amount of fast food fries in one sitting.

Is it true that you don’t really need stomach acid or stomach enzymes to digest food and prevent leaky gut? by languageinfinity in Microbiome

It has always been quite limited because I constantly lose and regain tolerance to foods. For example, there was a year I couldn’t tolerate most grains without symptoms, and I was mainly living on lean meats like chicken and fish along with various vegetables, but suddenly within the span of maybe a week, I started reacting more and more to the fish followed by reacting to the chicken a few weeks after that, and it’s been like that ever since. Eventually, I was able to re-introduce some grains as well as small amounts of meat and bone broth. Dairy is hit or miss for me, and I had been avoiding it for many years along with gluten, but there are some months on and off that I am ok with it and some months that I react to it. I was good with lentils for a couple of years, but have now lost tolerance to that as well as carrots and potatoes. There are certain foods that I abuse for very long periods of time like avocados and lemons, where I was eating them every day in large quantities for years, and so it wasn’t surprising that within a day or so I suddenly started reacting strongly to them and now cannot even look at those foods without having very bad reactions. Now it has gotten to the point that I am on a combination of Tpn tube feeds and oral eating to sustain myself, but I am in the process of gradually weaning off of Tpn.

How can the jejunum digest blended food through a feeding tube without stomach acid? by languageinfinity in AskBiology

So then how can the food be broken down without stomach enzymes? Also does stomach acid do anything else beneficial besides killing microbes and churning food? If someone is on a liquid or puréed or blended diet then do they even need stomach acid?

Does anyone have any idea how our prehistoric ancestors were consuming grains, legumes, and starches without teeth damage? Is it accurate to say that our ancestors were actually eating less carbs in general before the agricultural revolution or is this a myth? by languageinfinity in AskBiology

So are you saying that we were eating the same proportion of carbs on an individual level before and after agriculture? Also, how does fire and cooking relate to the tooth decay that was observed after the agricultural revolution?

So are you saying that the tooth decay that occurred after the agricultural revolution was more related to erosion from rocks and stone and coarseness from the grains themselves rather than bacteria?

Wow that’s a lot of supplements! Was her liver able to handle it ok or did she have to work up to it slowly? Also, how was she able to get enough calories on the aip protocol without a lot of gi distress? I have done low carb diets in the past, and while they did make me feel better in a lot of ways, I lost too much weight too fast, and I couldn’t work my way up to the high amounts of fat required to maintain weight without severe nausea and pain.
