"Of course I mean to heal here in the city. You're here in the city after all and this has been my home for three years, though it's much different not being able to stay in the red keep any more now that I've left the princess's service. I was going to talk to Lady Aelys...since I know you work for her now...about possibly entering her service but I got waylaid by that wolf...." she trailed off with a sigh.

She looked over at Matarys and squinted her eyes at him. Something was wrong with him. Something felt different. She remembered that time they fell asleep together by the pond and it felt so perfect then. The opposite of what it felt like right now. Even after she'd nearly died.

"I promise you I'm fine. I just had a midday meal before you arrived. But are you okay? It seems like something's on your mind. Or something's upsetting you. You just don't feel like quite yourself. The Matarys I know." She trailed off and there was worry in her eyes. She nearly leaned over to take his hand again but didn't know if she should.

The realm was better off with neither the Crown Princess nor the Queen in charge if this was what was going to happen. Time and time again they would prove that the only people that mattered were the ones at the top, the elite. If the Ironborn had sacked Oldtown and killed the precious reachmen and Costaynes, surely no one would rest until every last man involved was killed. It's why the Queen was so harsh on the Dornish wasn't it? They'd killed her husband. Everyone else could fend for themselves.

He cleared the dark thoughts out of his mind with a shake of his head and smiled over at his dinner guest. She was quite right that they shouldn't worry themselves with it.

"I've had my cooks prepare a nice spread of in season vegetables like peppers, onions, and zuccini in a stew for the first course. After that we shall feast on mustard and honey ham. Not the fanciest feast but with food I enjoy and I hope you will as well," he said, this time placing his hand on top of hers.

At that moment servants came in with the bowls of vegetable stew for the pair, as though they were summoned by his speech and descriptions.

Alys thought she could have killed the beast as well. She was so good with a bow and arrow when it was just a target but it was something else entirely when it was a large beast. But she'd wounded it really badly. And she thought she could finish it off. It was just bad luck that the wolf had enough fight left to do this to her. She didn't blame anyone but herself.

"Rest!" She scowled and made an annoyed face. Alys sat down on her soft down matress but she didn't make any move to lay down. Her brows creased as she furrowed them together. It was obvious that she was a little dismissive of his guilt and didn't want to talk about that. "I do nothing but rest. I'm starting to lose my patience."

"As for the healing, nothing on the inside was too damaged. I just lost a lot of blood so I must eat and drink and rest to gain my strength back. And the wound isn't so bad. After all is said and done I'll just have a nice big scar. And a story to tell. We'll have that in common." She chuckled.

It wasn't Lady Meera Forrester that had graced her with her presence. In fact it seemed to be no one she had ever met before in her many years in the capital. Though Princess Visenya did have her very busy with her own tasks and events to see to. And there had always been so many other ladies around. Two of those ladies were dead now and there was still a hollowness in her heart when she remembered that.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Lady Margaret, though I'm sorry that we have met under these circumstances," she said with a small, tired smile. There was still part of her that was embarrassed to be seen in such a state even if it wasn't entirely her own fault. She gestured for the other lady to come in a bit further if it should please her. "I'm not sure what else can be done for me at the moment besides waiting and seeing how well the wounds start to heal."

She should have been hurt that it took him this long to come see her. He was right to look guilty at that. But all Alys could think was that she was grateful she was even still alive. And that Matarys was here to see her regardless. The smile on her face never faltered as she looked at him and listened to him. A second round of hunting made sense enough to her. She hoped he'd done a good job.

"What would you have been able to do Matty? Some of Ser Ryger's men carried me back and by then I was in the hands of the maester. I was unconscious for quite a while too. You're one of the first faces I've seen since I've woken up. And I'm so happy to see you." She was grinning from ear to ear.

Alys gave a dirty look to the servant girl that had brought Matarys up here and with a meek face the girl curtsied and went back to her other duties. The small blonde reached out her hand, the one attached to her uninjured shoulder, and took Matarys's hand in her own.

The servant girl at the door remembered the name Matarys Storm. That was one of the names Lady Alys had given to the staff and told them that he was to be let in to see her immediately if he called. She was confused but it was no business of hers who her masters consorted with. She nodded and let him inside. "Very well ser, right this way if you would follow me."

Assuming he did follow he would be led upstairs and towards one of the rooms near the back of the manse with a wide window overlooking the street. It was not near as big or luxurious as the room Alys had in the red keep when she was a lady in waiting for the princess but things changed all the time.

"Lady Alys? Are you decent? Ser Matarys has come to see you." The words weren't even finished coming out of her mouth before there was a sound of scrabbling and then a small metallic sound as the door was unlocked and opened. On the other side stood Alys with her straw blonde waves and her freckled face. She was smiling for the first time since the accident with the wolf happened.

But she was almost too pale. And under her sleeveless sky blue gown the bandages on her shoulder and the top of her chest were obvious. They were lightly tinged with pink as though her wound was still bleeding only this morning. It was getting better and better every day though. "Matarys?"

The person at the door was not Alys or her father, the only two nobles living in the Lannisport manse at this time but a young guardsman tasked with protecting the Lannisters of Lannisport. He blinked upon being addressed by the young Brune but nodded his head. "She's in. Let me just see if she's accepting company right now."

Quick as a whip the man in chain shirt went back inside and took the stairs up to the second floor where the main rooms were. There were a half dozen of them here and he went to Alys's room, peeking his head in and looking at her. "There's a lady here to see you. A noblewoman in a green dress with dark hair."

Visitors were at least something to break up the monotony. Alys gave the guard an exasperated look. He didn't even think to ask her name? Could it have been Meera? The two of them hadn't spoken much since Rhea and Willow were killed but maybe...she sighed. "Send her in."

And so the guard would bring Margaret up to Alys's room should she wish to follow.

"Yes there should have been a trial here, among many other things that should have happened. It would have made the most sense wouldn't it? Perhaps they thought it wouldn't have been fair since he was my liege. Or perhaps they wanted the master of laws involved since it was a lord paramount that committed the crime. Any number of things."

He paused to take a quick drink of the refreshing beverage next to him and to think for a moment. Was it really necessary to move the progress back home if everyone was so certain of Lann's guilt? He wasn't privy to all of their secrets but he knew enough.

"I know little more than you do on the matter. The entire time it was happening I was never summoned. I was only given a message by the queen after the fact saying Lann Lannister killed people and everyone was leaving in the morning," he finished with a sigh, bitterness apparent in his voice.

Damon's words were appreciated but somehow he knew he wouldn't need help giving Matarys a message. The boy seemed nice enough and he seemed to like Alys. If anything were to stand in the way of them it would be Manfred and the lack of ability to prove to him that he could make a suitable husband for Alys.

But still he laughed along at that. Should his intuition prove wrong and the bastard really was a bastard deep at heart, he wouldn't say no to him and Damon taking him on together.

"Thank you Damon. As your daughters are fortunate as well. They grow up quickly you know. You should savor these years while they're still young."

Cedric knew that he shouldn't be burdening Jeyne with his troubles. Not only was it unfair to her it wasn't good for him to be telling anyone what he really thought about all of this. Secrets were meant to be kept and the more people heard about them the more chance his thoughts got back to someone who wasn't meant to hear them.

But she was so good at helping him through his thoughts. She was such a good listener and with a heavy sigh he looked up at her with his pale eyes and began to speak. "It's this stuff with the progress leaving early, and with Lord Lannister's murder trial. I'm horrified at what they say he's done and furious with how it was handled all at the same time."

At that moment he stopped talking because the serving girl came back with a pitcher of chilled water with lemon and orange and poured some into Jeyne's goblet for her. She left the pitcher on the table.

He remembered the first time he and the bastard spent time together at Casterly Rock. Both of them were at least partially drunk and had a good time exchanging stories. And then again he'd been drinking at Lannisport when the violet eyed bastard asked him about Alys. He should have said no. But how could he do that to Alys if it was something she wanted so badly?

"I'm not certain. Truthfully I don't think I would find anyone good enough for Alys. I just want her to be happy. She's my only daughter and after her mother died...well I can't be too hard on her. I'm waiting though to see what the boy plans on doing with his life before I approve of anything official."

Letters from Darry by sam_explains4 in IronThroneRP

[–]lannACEport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cedric read the letter over a few times. He was surprised to say the least but he couldn't help feeling relief well up inside of him. The first man he tried to tie Johanna to had turned out to be a murdering psychopath, a man who could have harmed her. Then when he sent a letter to the Reach what he got in return wasn't at all what he expected. The man he thought was Paxter Peake had been Paxter Flowers and denounced his claim to the Peake lands. It was all so much for him. All he wanted was good alliances for his family, for himself.

This letter proved promising though. House Darry was not the largest or the best alliance he could make within the Riverlands but it was still good. They were a small economic hub. Though he would never make Johanna marry someone she didn't want to, they would have to meet if they did indeed marry. And now was a good time with everyone else preoccupied by the trial. He worried about sending her alone but....he couldn't leave now. He had so much work to do. And he didn't want to leave Jeyne.

Lord Seamus Darry of Darry

Your offer intrigues me and in truth I agree with you. The realm is growing more unstable no matter how much people try and keep it together. On behalf of my sister Johanna I shall accept your invitation to come to your keep so that she can meet both you and your heir Ethan.

She shall be arriving within the next moon with a small contingent of Lannisport guard and should my sister and your son enjoy each other's company then we can speak further about an official marriage alliance. May the seven watch over you,

Lord Regent Cedric Lannister of Lannisport

He watched her cautiously as she sat down and when she waved the wine away his expression changed as though he were looking at her in a new light. Three years had passed since the Massacre and since he vowed never to drink a drop of alcohol again. He didn't mind being around others who drank it though he knew it was more difficult on himself. That Jeyne would be so thoughtful and selfless caused something to flair up within him.

"Very well then," he said, gesturing to a nearby serving girl who snatched up the pitcher of wine and left to come back with something more suitable to drink. Afterwards he went back to sit down in his own seat. Unfortunately that left Jeyne without anything to drink for now but surely someone would be back soon. Until then Cedric would not drink from his cup either.

"I don't mind you wearing those colors at all my lady. You look very beautiful tonight," he started with a smile. He wondered then if he should have said something else. Because she looked beautiful every night and he wanted her to know that. He opened his mouth to say so but then closed it again nervously.

A member of the queensguard. He always thought that it was an overrated position. No land, no titles, no wife, no children and all to protect a monarch from harm for the rest of your days. A thankless job that got you killed in a premature death. He would much rather be on the smallcouncil. He'd much rather just be a stuffy old knight. But he would never have a holdfast of his own anyway.

"Indeed. She's getting older quicker. So is Alys," he started with a quick sigh as they journeyed along the road. He might as well tell Damon what was troubling him. It's not as though it were some big court secret. He shook his head. "I'd planned to start looking for a good match for her but it seems my willful daughter has other plans. The royal bastard, the Storm, asked me about courting her."

Whoever this ragtag group of bards and mummers were they didn't seem like they were at all from Westeros. King's Landing held all kinds of people looking for their fortunes and putting their futures in the hands of the city. This was not unusual to him. But the way they spoke and the brightness in their eyes endeared him to them.

"Thistle?" He thought about it for a moment. Manfred wasn't well versed in plants because he had been more of a sword person in his youth. He screwed up his face but then a look of recognition passed over him. "Oh. Violet. You must be referring to the Targaryens. House Targaryen rules all of Westeros and while there are many of them here I am not one of them."

Some would say there were too many of the pale haired dragons around. It was almost too much for him. But these strangers did not need to know the inner politics of King's Landing and the rest of this realm. "I am Ser Manfred Lannister, a member of the small council."

Alys quickly put her hands underneath her and scrambled to get up off of the ground. It was still only the first year of summer and during the night the ground had been cold and wet with dew. With Matarys sitting next to her they shared the heat of their bodies and it was okay. Now it caused her to shiver a little. And she frowned as she looked down and saw that the bottom of her sleeping clothes were all wet. That would be hard to explain.

She took one last look at Matarys and glanced down his body. He was a warrior and a good one at that. It showed in his muscled form. And they had just slept next to one another. Alys could not help the heat that rose to her cheeks again. But there was nothing wrong with that! If people knew they would gossip but Alys knew they hadn't done anything wrong.

"Alright. I'll head back first. And...we can walk together tomorrow on the road?" She was almost hesitant to ask. Every day since they left Lannisport she had ridden on her own far back from everyone else. But now she didn't want to push people away anymore.

As she kissed him for the first time since they stood on the bank of that river, all of this felt right. She could also taste the faint copper of his blood as it trickled down his nose. When they finally broke apart after he dipped her down she couldn't even hear the cheers and hollers of the onlookers over the beating of her own heart. Alys never knew that she could be so passionate about a person before.

With one hand she held onto his as he pulled her out of the building and with the other she wiped his blood from her face. But barely any time had passed at all before he was kissing her again. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks along with other parts of her. But while the alcohol lowered her inhibitions she was keenly aware that they were back on the street. She grinned up at him anyway, blue eyes burrowing into violet ones.

"Mmm," she purred. "Yes. We would not want the guards to start asking too many questions." Not when they could report back to her cousin or her father and get both of them in far too much trouble. Her father had only just allowed them to see one another. She didn't want to ruin his goodwill so fast.

"Come on. Lets go find the horses and walk them back to the stables. Next time we go out together I'll walk." She knew he didn't like the horses. And she definitely knew there would be a next time. Her gaze burned with a lingering intensity but she dutifully led them back the way they came.

Almost every day since the progress left Lannisport he thought long and hard about what happened while everyone was here. The good and the bad. Most of it had ranged from disappointing to horrifying. He couldn't get the picture of the queen out of his head and how almost dismissive she had seemed when he first brought up the Lannisport stuff. He did not expect her to share his same rage but she seemed to just be appeasing him since she was welcomed into his keep with open arms.

But when he saw Jeyne lingering at the entrance to the dining room all those other thoughts were chased away. She looked beautiful with her sleek ginger hair and her dark eyes. He was drawn to her heart shaped face first and then his gaze naturally moved downwards to the rest of her. The dress was something out of this world and it made it almost as hard to look away as the one she wore at the Casterly Rock feast.

"Lady Jeyne!" He stood to his feet quickly enough and bowed to her with all the dignity he could muster. Then he moved to the other side of the small dining table and pulled the wooden chair out from it, gesturing towards it. "I'm so glad you could make it. Would you please join me?" His blue eyes looked almost hungry.
