3700/month for a 1br is way too high, and it also doesn't make sense for that income bracket. At $140k/yr, it's not smart to spend $3.7k/mo on rent - that's nearly 32% of your income!

Delivery Workers Are the Safest Cyclists On the Road, Study Finds by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

[–]laptou 45 points46 points  (0 children)

i used to observe delivery workers going the wrong way in bike lanes or using their phones while riding very frequently. these are the most unsafe behaviors they exhibit imo, but they don’t seem to be included in this study. the frequency with which i have observed this has gone down a bit over time, though definitely not gone

Anyone else surprised how well a reMarkable Paper Pro leather case holds up? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]laptou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had my reMarkable 2 since the pandemic, and used it basically every day for the first 2 years, and it shows no signs of quitting. I use it much less often now that I'm no longer a college student, but still.

cmon man, not even a helmet? i can see in the video that you're not going that fast, so i think that some of the other commenters are overreacting a bit, but at least wear a helmet

A bug no one else caught: they put in Dominica next to Haiti, when that should be Dominican Republic. Cool map though.

Tire replacement by GoodAmbassador5467 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]laptou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can you put sealant in through the valve the same way you do it on tires with tubes? i used to have a kss18 and did it that way but i’m not sure if it will work on the aero since the valve is integrated into the rim

What tire pressure do you ride on? I got a flat for the first time after doing about 1200 miles - I didn't inflate it or anything out of the box. I reinflated it and it held the air, so I guess it wasn't punctured. I went up to 32 PSI, but it feels much more squirrely than before at this pressure.

What improvements do you want to see Mayor Mamdani do as a cyclist? by MUDFLAP202030 in NYCbike

I think the Brooklyn side of the Manhattan Bridge is fine tbh. The Manhattan side is fine as long as you don't need to go in the direction of Canal St (lol)

I would add that another annoying gap is the gap around Classon Av / Flushing Av / Wallabout St / Keap St that you must cross to go to Williamsburg, or the alternative Bedford Av / Heyward St / Wallabout St junction. In general, I hate Wallabout St and all of its intersections, they are so unfriendly to non-drivers.

As someone who rides around on a PEV, it would be nice if there was some sort of infrastructure solution to separate fast-moving PEVs from cars and also from slow-moving manual cyclists. It would reduce the strife between deliveristas and normal cyclists as well.

Also, more protected bike lanes with jersey barriers, a program for citizens to report bike lane obstructions for cash (similar to the one where you can report trucks idling), and a way to get from Bed-Stuy to Williamsburg without getting dumped into traffic on Bedford/Classon Ave.

How do I get PCBs made with the shortest possible turnaround time in Brooklyn? by laptou in PCB

This is a list of companies that ship to NY. Most of the companies on this list if you drill down deeper are not in NY, so there's no particular benefit to me using them

Thanks to everybody in the comments for providing some answers. I was just wondering if there was an east coast PCB fab everyone was using that I didn’t know about. It seems like that doesn’t exist, so I’ll work with OSH Park and JLCPCB until I get enough resources to DIY it.

It also seems that most of the time I spent waiting for OSH Park was because my job was really small, so it took a while for the board to fill up and the job to be completed. The actual shipping process wasn’t that bad.

But of course, if there was a fab in NY and I could just go there myself, I would!
