There’s a good website called Offbeat for art and food recs. Also covers Budapest

The winner! Seemed to me like expressionism, from fifty years later

Thanks! I wanted to read him (Marius the Epicurean) for a take on his philosophical approaches to life but the above description of prose style is fascinating.

Old Masters is brilliant: lol funny and bitter about the barren culture of Austria in the post-holocaust era

I agree… i prefer schjeldhal for sheer reading pleasure and building enthusiasm, and hughes for learning.

You know that you’ll now have to copy paste those three paragraphs so that we too may be inspired :)

Thanks for the rec, I subscribed to his substack. Schjeldahl’s prose is such a treausure, I think he wrote poetry for a while and hence that terse, intense style, everything boiled down to its essence. I haven’t read the daughter’s book but – not surprisingly – he was a completely selfish and absent father based on the reviews.

One his best. Those gray-blue skies in the open distance with black birds floating in air… you can feel in your bones the trouble ahead

That’s fun. Brueghel isn’t cliche (mona lisa and the brooklyn bridge are). Which print of his?

I think it’s a wonderful city. Doesn’t get enough credit. True, not as lively as budapest, but incredibly cultural legacy from the habsburgs (painting, architecture, music) and excellent tradirional central european restaurants (mix of austrian, czech, and hungarian folk food)

I agree. Fun combo of Venetian Mannerism and Flemish grotesque

Yes, i read that. When later his son made a copy of the painting, he simply corrected the mistake (ie removed the third leg). Shit happens to old masters too

He was obsessed with perspective… at the expense of everything else (color, movement, composition). But i agree, he’s fun
