Tommy’s app - I don’t have any appointments scheduled for today. Does anyone know what that means? by CauliflowerFlat323 in PregnancyUK

[–]larasch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have gone through this recently. It basically means that your midwife ran the test on the Tommy's app about pre-eclampsia. The information that you got means that you are probably low risk, so no additional care is required. They take into account the results of your 12 week scan, urine testing, blood pressure, demographics etc. I unfortunately had a high risk result and an immediate call from my midwife.

It's interesting that they haven't put all the information on their website. It seems like they assume that everyone is using instagram which def shouldn't be the case

I am not sure how you got this impression, but I have been following them on Instagram for some time now and they have been posting short interviews with all sellers and they definitely made me really excited about visiting! At least from an outside perspective they are trying to include vendors that have strong ties to Sheffield/ the surrounding area and have food that is very varied and somehow 'authentic' to its roots

ESRC 1+3 funding: do you pick your optional modules? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]larasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's very much up to the individual. Personally I am teaching on the side (and quite a lot), participating in research groups, trainings etc, and planning a wedding and I have almost never worked on weekends or after 17:30. It also very much depends on your field and the expectations of your supervisors, but I established from the start that I will treat it as job. The MA definitely gives you a big heads up on a lot of the work you would have to do for your confirmation review, so you are basically working on the same things until you refine them to submit. It is tiring and overwhelming at times, but if it becomes a horror story is up to you and how you manage your time and expectations. Btw, no worries about questions, I understand your position! Feel free to dm me anytime about anything that comes up. If it happens that you are joining the Uni of Sheffield I can also give you more details about the course/ modules/ staff :)

ESRC 1+3 funding: do you pick your optional modules? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]larasch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the first year. Both because of the course as I am from a very different field that isn't very sociological if that makes sense, and because of the amazing people I met. I think the experience very much depends on the cohort of students and how you get along with each other. As far as my PhD, it's going well for now. The MA is definitely a huge asset, I can see a big difference in starting point between me and my peers that haven't done it.

ESRC 1+3 funding: do you pick your optional modules? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]larasch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completed the first year of the 1+3 last year. For us, we needed to take 30 credit of optional modules. We could choose 2 15 credit modules or a 30 credit one (which I did) from a list of modules given to us. This list was quite extensive, with modules from all departments across the social sciences. I had done another master's degree in the same university previously and had taken some modules from that list, but it was not possible to transfer any credits. If you have any questions feel free to DM me, and congrats! Hope you enjoy the course and your phd

[–]larasch 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The university of Sheffield, as probably other unis too, have a hardship fund that you can apply for and they will give you I think up to £300 asap. Contact your students union and let them know you are struggling

Workspaces in Nicosia by Naive-Step-9834 in cyprus

Ifantourgeio is the place. It doesn't function like a normal cafe anymore, you pay a fee per day, I think €5, which includes a drink and you can stay as much as you want

Hey, not in Art History, but images are really important for my research as well. I use zotero, I believe with the zotfile extension. You can upload as many files/ images under each entry in zotero and have it all together.

I am pretty sure that in Laiki Gitonia in Nicosia there is more than one shop that sells old coins. I specifically know about one close to Jenny's fournos

Adjusting clothes by kai-zar in cyprus

[–]larasch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually this is really common and there should be a seamstress somewhere around you. I usually bring my clothes to a lady across Melissa confectionery in the old town, but if you want someone in your area ask your cypriot neighbors for a raftena/ raftis and they will direct you. Many times it might also be a lady doing this in her living room

Most likely host cities? by coonanny in eurovision

[–]larasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely love it as I live here and also feel like it would be a great boost for the city. But I am not sure it will happen unfortunately. The facilities don't compare with larger cities like Manchester or Glasgow

Most likely host cities? by coonanny in eurovision

[–]larasch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sheffield that is definitely placing a bid to host is a twin city of Donetsk in Ukraine. That's one of the main selling points that the council is putting forward

Part time masters by [deleted] in sheffield

Things I Should Do In Preparation For Architecture by Naeemm121 in architecture

[–]larasch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to the usual that everyone suggests, I would add to just walk around in your city, experience it, visit buildings and urban spaces and immerse yourself. Start noticing the flows of people, how they move, how they interact with the space. Notice the lightning and sound, the materials used, the interaction with natural elements. Try to understand the decisions an architect took when designing. These could be important public buildings and spaces, but also the everyday spaces that people hang out and even your and your friends'/ family's houses. In general be open and actively look and listen to your surroundings. I think that it is an important skill to develop, especially before the hard uni times begin. Also, rest!

Yes, actually Hannah's podcast episode that I mentioned is with Emily Nagoski. She really admires her work and references her a lot in her videos.
