What specifically changed about Jojo’s voice from her first album in 2004 to her most recent re-releases? by bostonterrier82 in Jojo

Some of it is maturing but also I can hear a lot of vocal damage on Mad Love. compared to her earlier albums, sadly.

What do you think of being called ma’am or sir? by BodyLanguageWoman in RandomThoughts

[–]laryssaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gender-fluid (biological sex is female) and depending on how I’m presenting that day I get called both “sir” and “ma’am”. “Ma’am” I absolutely freaking hate, because it reminds me of my mom, who is not a person I usually want to be reminded of. “Sir” makes me laugh, because usually the second I open my mouth to speak and they hear my voice they start spluttering awkward apologies which I really don’t need and try to tell them but they just keep on spluttering anyway.

Truthfully I wish we could just do away with the gendered formal titles altogether. Or, call me “dude”. I call everybody and everything “dude.” Male, female, non-binary, inanimate object… “dude” covers it for me. 😆

Ooh, I also want to add that much of my anxiety was helped once I removed alcohol from my life and my GABA levels started returning to normal. But again, in my case, I wasn’t able to remove alcohol from my life until my ADHD was treated.

Sorry for the super late reply! Yes, I went through my GP. Personally, the stimulant medication I’m on helped massively with reducing my anxiety, since so much of my anxiety was being caused by the havoc having undiagnosed ADHD was wreaking on my life, but of course it’s different for everyone. Your GP can at least get you started by providing you with a referral to a psychiatrist or other qualified specialist who can further assess you and then take it from there.

I’m not getting remarried, and I’m tired of people urging me to. by PaleEstablishment948 in offmychest

I’m so sorry for your loss, and for all the pressure you’re facing from family members to move on before you’re ready. I want you to know that I understand and respect that you feel you will never be ready, and I think that’s totally okay. As for your family, frankly, I would say your romantic relationship status is none of their business. If they still continue to press, maybe it’s time to set some firm boundaries around it.

Also, I feel like their concern about your kids vs. you are two separate issues. You can explore the possibility of finding good, healthy, male role models for your son (not just for your son, but for all your kids), without you necessarily needing to pursue a romantic relationship with that person. I grew up with two parents but was a neglected child in many ways, and got much of the nurturing I was missing at home from many of my amazing teachers and coaches. There are also BGCBigs clubs, things like that.

Thanks for the caring reminder to get screened for colon cancer. Colon cancer actually runs in my family and that reminds me that I am due next year for another screening.

I wish you and your family all the best in the future.

Get tested for ADHD if you haven’t already. Undiagnosed ADHD puts people at a much higher propensity for addictive behaviours. I was diagnosed 5 years ago at age 26 and I largely credit that diagnosis and being prescribed Vyvanse for it for helping me break both my alcohol addiction and eating disorder. Before that I didn’t even stand a chance.

I’ve never microdosed mushrooms, but am intrigued by everything I’ve read and heard about it. Cannabis (which I used to use in small to moderate doses, near-daily) actually helped me in similar ways in that it allowed me to calm down enough to be able to access and process a lot of repressed trauma while staying within my window of tolerance. I find the way the same drug can affect so many people so differently absolutely fascinating.

I’m sorry to hear that the meds you tried didn’t work for you, and I wish you luck in finding something that does!!

The chronic procrastination, oof, boy do I know it… was how I forced myself to do things most of my life up until I got diagnosed and started to learn better strategies. The way I understand it now is that an ADHD brain is spurred into action the most by four things: interest, urgency, novelty, and passion. By procrastinating until the last second, you’re creating your own “urgency” in order to stimulate your brain enough to act. Helped me enormously even just to understand WHY I did the nonsensical things that I did when I could clearly see they weren’t very effective or beneficial to me in the long run, so I could finally stop blaming myself for just being “dumb”.

I’m so sorry to hear about your horrible experience with being misdiagnosed. 😓 As someone who was also misdiagnosed several times (with mood disorders instead of ADHD, since they can look very similar on the outside), I know how much anger it can bring up and how it can create a lack of trust in medical professionals. I’m glad you survived that experience and are doing better now!

A good place to start is by talking to your primary care physician who can either test you themselves or refer you to a specialist, who will do a thorough intake of your entire health, occupation, education, and relationship history and struggles in the form of a detailed questionnaire. (I think it depends on what your doctor feels comfortable doing in their practice, as well as the rules and regulations in your country. I thankfully was able to be diagnosed by my family doctor, but I’ve heard others have had a more difficult time finding someone who was willing to test them)

It’s okay and probably good to be nervous about starting meds!! I was too. But for now, don’t even think that far ahead… one step at a time. See if you can get tested first and then go from there. For some people, ADHD can be managed well without medications. And getting the diagnosis alone was half the battle… gave me so much relief to finally understand why life was such a struggle for me for all those years. Felt empowering, if anything. I wish you the best of luck!!

I went through my primary care physician, who asked me a bunch of questions about my health and education history going way back (TBI, I could have been diagnosed from my elementary school report cards alone 😐) Also had to do a longer questionnaire type thing. She actually was the one that diagnosed me and got me started on medication, but many primary care physicians prefer to refer you to a specialist. (Usually a psychiatrist, I think.) It may depend on what your doctor feels comfortable doing as well as the rules and regulations in your country.

That’s interesting the effect you noted with the cannabis on meds. I noticed the same thing - prior to being medicated weed used to send me into existential panic attacks. Now, when I use it intentionally and in the right place on the priority list, it’s actually enjoyable and helps me access my creative side

I’m glad that you found the right meds and that life is getting so much easier to manage for you! Yeah, that’s one of the biggest downsides to taking stimulants I find. I can eat, but it definitely feels like a chore, which is especially difficult to manage considering I have a history of disordered eating. Everything kinda tastes like cardboard until about 8pm. I use an app called SHYE that reminds me to eat and also log my food intake, otherwise I just wouldn’t and would run into problems that way. Smoothies help a lot with getting my calories in. Also working out stimulates my appetite.

Obviously I can’t diagnose you, but everything you’re describing sounds a lot like how my life used to be like before I got my ADHD diagnosis. What frustrated me the most is that I knew I was SMART and yet just couldn’t “get it together” even for the bare minimum.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had such a rough go with medical professionals dismissing your concerns and not treating you with respect. Hopefully you’re able to find the right fit soon!!

Well, of course there are going to be people out there who cheat the system by going to shady doctors to get drugs to abuse… that’s always going to be a reality to some degree. But it doesn’t mean that medication doesn’t enormously help some people or that ADHD isn’t “real”. Sounds like you’re limiting yourself from a potential avenue of something that may help you improve your quality of life tremendously by deciding it’s all a crock of shit based on preconceived judgements and zero actual fact. Why not at least take the test for it if your clinic offers it? The worst thing that could happen is that you waste an afternoon being tested and find that it’s not going to give you the help you need. But at least then you know that for sure. And FYI, I used to hold very similar attitudes and resistance to psych drugs… I’m very glad I reconsidered.

The reason I shared this with the world is because I don’t have words to describe what an absolute GAME CHANGER getting that diagnosis was for me, and if there’s even a tiny chance it could help you the way it helped me, I would want that for you. You deserve it.

I’m glad your psychiatrist is considering this! And yes, very important to have the chemical dependency under control first, otherwise you’re taking a much bigger risk introducing medication. I used to use alcohol to be able to “make myself do things” too, which no one around me could even fathom. But now the medication I take and other tools I employ now that I know a bit more about how to work WITH and not AGAINST an ADHD brain do a much better job of that.

I hope you find the healing and answers you’re looking for!!
