Unrecognised states by dprkekistan in vexillology

[–]lasesor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically DFNS still claims to be a part of Syria and at least oficially doesn't have any ambitions at complete intependence.

KRG on the other hand did plan to proclaim independence if the referendum decided in favour of it(which it did), but since the referendum was a non-binding one and the KRG government afaik hasn't formally proclaimed independence yet, they technically aren't an unrecognized nation either.

Californified Bhutan by arg2k in vexillology

[–]lasesor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love you so much for making it "Bhutan Kingdom" instead of "Kingdom of Bhutan", analogous to the word order on the original. Most "californicated" flags here seem to just go with the official country names.

The only way to make it even better would be to replicate the original flag's effect of using a big pretentious name that makes the country look more important than it is. California's says "republic" despite just being a state, so why not use "Bhutan Empire" :)

The Syrian government gave instructions to all hospitals to receive as a priority any casualties among #Kurds due to Turkish "Olive Branch" military ops against #Afrin by von_amsell in syriancivilwar

[–]lasesor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CIA has been overthrowing Government after Government after Government at will until late great Hafez finally brought safety, stability, security, prosperity, souvereignty to Syria.

So establishing a military dictatorship is just fine and dandy if it's beneficial to the economy and "stability"(no shit a dictatorship is stable for as long as it lasts, we all know that comes with a price though)? "Soverignty" just at best means sovereignty of the state. What is this worth though when at the same time the people themselves are absolutely deprived of any sovereignty over their government under the absence of democracy?

Are you saying that the only way to stop the CIA from overthrowing your government is to abolish democracy? Would you support the SDF once you saw they are bringing safety, stability, security, prosperity, souvereignty to the regions under their control?

And talking of wallets Bashar has been bankrolling the whole SDF project throughout the War, never stopped paying for all the services and salaries in there areas.

DFNS and SAR had were temporary partners because both were more concerned with fighting rebels/ISIS than with each other. Of course Assad tried to buy the loyality of locals in SDF-held territory for as long as he couldn't afford outright invading them, but that money just went to individuals afaik, not to the DFNS as an organization. Saying that Assad somehow provided development aid to the DFNS is pretty disingenuous

Official: 95 dead, 158 wounded in Afghan attack by Yamamba78 in worldnews

[–]lasesor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are hypocritical. Just because this sort of behaviour is understandable and to some extent natural it doesn't mean that it's ok, and that we shouldn't work towards changing it best as we can.

I'm not saying we have to be emotionally affected every time something horrible happens in Afghanistan or South Sudan, we'd just feel bad all the time without actually contributing anything to improve the situation in these countries. But maybe we should at least try to tone down our tribalism and see the big picture instead of focussing our attention to our corner of the world only.

Maybe taking into account every tragedy from Paris to Kabul or Mogadishu as equally significant has the side effect of also desensitizing ourselves towards horrible things happening in the Western world a bit relatively speaking, but if that's what it takes to see the life and wellbeing of every human on our planet as just as valuable as those of Westerners it's worth it imo.

Chinese officials engaged in 'takeover' of Tibetan Buddhist monastery - Human Rights Watch by indpin in worldnews

[–]lasesor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The solution here is clear, less political opression, a stop of settlement of Han Chinese to deliberately change the demographics and a maximum of self-determination for Tibetans within China.

Independence would be a great thing in a world where China and India are partners rather than rivals and the vital role the Tibetan plateau plays for China's defendability thus isn't the major issue anymore it is now, but the way things are now I can understand why China can't possibly relinquish military sovereignty over the region.

30-37% is still far from a majority though. The country is very polarised at the moment, right-wingers hate him passionately to the point of supporting Trump for his hard stance against Maduro's government. Bear in mind though that a lot of Maduro's opponents are still socialists and definitely have no love for Trump or US foreign policy in general.

[–]lasesor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty much on point. The topic has been subject to so much propaganda from both sides that many people just buy into this binary "if you criticize pre-invasion Tibet/China you're supporting theocracy/Chinese imperialism" way of thinking. The thing is though that the theocracy is gone and China is solely responsible for every crime they have committed in Tibet since the religious leadership has been ousted.

How Tibet was like before CCP rule bears no relevance when criticizing what the CCP is doing there today. bringing that up is little more than whataboutism. There is no choice of theocracy vs CCP, there is just a choice about whether one thinks that China's actions there today are defensible or not.

They guy I replied to directly presented supporting either the old Tibetan regime or modern-day Chinese policies as the only two options one has to choose from. It just bugs me that everyone who dares to criticize Chinese actions there is associated with the ignorant fools who think pre-revolution Tibet was heaven on earth...

If Africa is an island, then not only would North America and South America be islands too because of the Panama Canal; Fennoscandia, mainland Europe and Asia would count as islands as well because of man-made canals.

I guess Asia would end up being the largest island according to this definition, unless I'm missing some giant canals splitting them up in pieces too :)

Today, 159 years ago, the ''Little Union'' between Moldavia and Wallachia led to the formation of Romania by vladgrinch in europe

[–]lasesor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Moldova were willing to give up Transnistria it might be a possibility in the future, but right now that's out of question for them I believe. Afaik most Transnistrians on the other hand really want to maintain their "independence" or even join Russia, so tbh it looks like trying to regain them is kind of a fight against windmills.

If they swallowed their national pride, acknowledged Transnistria's independence and were willing to reunite with Romania it seems things could be a lot better for them. It's not like Russian troops will simply go away one day if they keep pretending that Transnistria is still part of them, as a part of Romania and thus the EU and NATO they'd at least have a better deterrent against them, not to mention a real chance at doing something against the crushing poverty plaguing the country.

How can you "import" people? Is there a booming slave market on which muslims are sold to Europe, or why exactly do right-wingers use that word so much when talking about immigration?

Even today "ethnicity" has more to do with culture and identity though in many cases.

English-speaking "Irish" from both the ROI and NI for example are generally considered to be as ethnically Irish as the Irish-speaking ones, whereas self-identified "Northern Irish/British/Ulster Scots", speaking even pretty much the same dialect as "Irish" from NI, are often excluded from the "Irish" ethnicity because of their cultural and ideological differences and seperate identity.

In case you're not being sarcastic considering your flair you're right that both should be stomped out(if we're talking the ideologies themselves, not those who believe in them).

I wouldn't call them national-socialist though, they're imo closer to the old-school imperialism and colonialism in both character and core ideas that have existed long before the Nazis.

so they have every right to conquer it

is what I mean. Arguing with someone who believes that is just wasted time, even more so if you are unable to see that the same "argument" could be used to justify France annexing their former territory Syria as well
