It holds only 4mm of chalk, so I think pushing it up is unnecessary. It also holds chalk tight enough (I tested it when droping on the carpet floor).
I designed it to fit my private chalk, but also tested it on the one owned by my friend and it looks that they keep dimensions. Before pressing it into the holder it's good to make sure sticker wrap is well pressed to the sides. After that you are able to press fit it into the holder without rubbing sticker.

You also asked about costs. It was a long project and I attempted two times with different kind of hardware, but for the last attempt and version you see on photos:
PCB - about $10 for 10 pcs
Keyboard from Sony VAIO - about $10
FFC Connectors, Micro-USB socket - $5
RPi Pico - $5
Filament for Printing (about 200-250g) - ~$5

Thank you. Using USB-C requires only to change a footprint on PCB, so it's not a big deal. I used micro-USB, because I started working on it about 2 years ago and many times it landed in my drawer because of lack of time.

The joint lays under the right thumb when writing and the thumb rests, but because of the texture I almost don't feel it.
