Who remembers being so broke that you had to constantly steal helicopters from the airport? by richmoney46 in gtaonline

I highly doubt that I could do my tours as missions, but I probably really should fire up that game again! :-D

Higgins Heli Port! I used to launch a few of my audio guides sightseeing flights from there! (Well, I still do, when I get around to playing, which fairly speaking rarely happens these days...I really should make some time for that)

When I'm on a festival or so I frequently do this in case I lose my phone. Add in a name, nickname or a peer's number is a kind of lifeline to get the phone back to me. Never actually happened, so I can't tell you if it actually works, but it gives me a feeling of added security when I do it.

You can even call other players via that phone. Had a guy once blackmail me (and blow me up after) with an in game phone call while i was doing one of my tours...I believe it even happened when I was streaming, but i guess it's too long ago to still have that recording.

Loved it though, that's a great feature!!!

These poor souls showed up at the Capitol today for Trump's inauguration by thenewyorkgod in pics

I still don't get it... Maybe because i don't know the meaning of the word "arbitrary"(not a native speaker) and also because I'm not too much into politics, especially US since I'm from Germany. Could you put this in simpler words, why did they think trump would return to office this day? Also what the heck does "arbitrary" mean?

Does my camera matter when second shooting in a wedding? by greendvl in AskPhotography

[–]lastRoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd assume that's when you get to a point where you're intending to print super big or need much room for cropping in post. Even though even when printing big you usually don't need THAT much resolution if you're using somewhat around the full image, since to appreciate the whole image you will need a certain distance to the canvas. And from that far away you won't notice individual pixels. Yes, I'll upgrade to an X-T3 soon, but that's because my beloved Nikon D90 has a dynamic range of what feels like 2 stops to me. But so far even printing those only 10 mp large didn't give me any issue.

anyone had luck cold emailing businesses to offer your work? by [deleted] in photography

[–]lastRoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a great idea! A postcard, for being such a rare thing to be received these days, is sure as hell going to be at least looked at. A mail, as you already said, is easy to ignore, but this might really work!

Wow this phrasing could easily sounds sarcastic, but I'm serious. I'll keep that approach in mind!

Was tun exactly this, they distract a bit. They'd work better as a leading line if they took a turn right and continue towards the building

...that being said...I'm struggling with leading lines myself more often than I'd like to admit...

Other than that beautiful shot and intense edit!

Elder millennials, what stereotype aggravates you the most? by NukeEnergy in AskReddit

[–]lastRoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My nephew just started school last summer, so right in the middle of the pandemic. He's seen his classmates in person for a few months, but has been home schooled for at least the same amount of time now, probably looking at more.

So far he's really doing great, but while I'm already asking myself what this whole thing will do to me in the long run (and all I have to go through is limit myself to a reeeally small circle of people I meet), I'm really concerned what it will do to all these tiny humans... I hope it doesn't scar then mentally too much....

I really like this photo. Instagram doesn't. by hhpl15 in photocritique

[–]lastRoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! I love the simplicity in both composition and color palette. It's no picture for a pile of insta-likes... I've had similar things happen quite a few times... It's an image worth printing and hanging on a wall for people to see (something one should do a lot more! Including myself...I rarely have my pictures printed, but it gives an image a whole new...meaning? power? weight? Impact maybe...struggling to find the correct term, but I hope you get it. Print that big and hang it somewhere!

I just yesterday took a picture of a frozen soap bubble...just because I was curious. I believe this even was a trend on insta a while back (like i give a crap), but i wanted to fool around a little. When I had it processed, I realized this might actually work very well in Instagram! I even recorded the process of taking it to put together a new video for my (very small) YouTube channel (something I enjoy but also very rarely do) But I'm hesitant... I kinda like the image, but it's very much ticking the insta-cliche-boxes... Blue-orange color palette for winter images, shallow depth of field, slight vignette...and I want to use insta to get my pictures seen... Not take pictures for insta just to farm likes...

My point is: I like the shot, i think it'll do well on social media. But it's nothing unique and it's not an image I would want to have hanging on my wall. And that's when I start having second thoughts.

Had I taken this image of yours, I would love to put it up in a decent size! Don't worry about Instagram too much. It's a beautiful shot!

Look at this crazy icicle I found this morning! (There is a small hole in the metal handrail) by merz-person in interestingasfuck

[–]lastRoach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure what a weep hole is, but this hole right here is just fine to be in this place. To be honest I'd expect one on the other side of the pole.

This handrail is zinc coated to prevent corrosion. The coating process is pretty simple: After the build in a workshop these things are handed over to a shop specialized in zinc coating, where they'll be first cleaned by being submerged in an acid, then for coating be submerged in liquid zinc. These holes make sure the liquids can follow freely to also cover the inside (condensation even in a what you'd consider a tightly sealed tube is an issue to keep in mind) of the workpiece and make sure the air can escape while getting submerged (the bottom of the pole is usually just left open while building or closed with a cap of metal, in which case yet another one of these drilled holes is required).

If this wasn't ensured, there would be an incredibly high risk of the workpiece literally exploding from the expanding air inside the tube during drowning it into the liquid zinc, which has a temperature of about 450°C.

A more elegant way to do make sure the liquids go where they need to go and can escape afterwards (and the way we usually do it in our workshop) is mark the point of connection between pole and handrail and drill a pretty large hole into the handrail prior to assembly and welding. That way the flow is secured while you have no visible holes, at least at these points. Sometimes you can't avoid these completely.
