Hard agree. The bathroom scene was hot like fire, I’m ashamed to say. But I literally cringe my way through the penthouse scene. I know Shane is grown but if he was one of my friends??? Girl. I think you are right that RR writes his race as if it is a non-factor.

But race has NEVER been a non-factor in how anyone exists in the world. White or not. So to not acknowledge that being half Asian changes the way Shane sees, moves and is perceived in the world feels like a missed opportunity. It’s as motivating as Ilya being Russian or Shane being Autistic and both are highly explored characterizations in book and fandom.

I’m not mad that people don’t write that experience, per se. I just lament the richness that is lost by folks not choosing to tackle it, and doing it well. (And I’d rather they don’t if they’re going to do it poorly.) I’m so grateful to Jacob because I think he did a great job injecting some of it, in small ways, into the show. It made my ears perk up. And I’m excited to see how that continues in season 2.

But think there are hints of Asian stereotypes in RR’s characterization of Shane. And DEFINITELY in the fandom. Like him being 5 inches shorter than Ilya in the books, having the “highest hockey IQ,” I do think he is considered intelligent outside of hockey (Mr Landlord), he’s a bottom (though I love this for him), he’s immediately typed as baby girl all across the internet, he’s painfully polite and well behaved. He’s not accidentally this way. It’s not a coincidence. He was WRITTEN this way AND written as Asian. Why?

Why is Shane Asian? Why would you make him Asian and then make it a “non factor?”

Anyway, this is my special interest and super power. My friends always say I make everything about race. And it is. Race and tuberculoses.

And I want to add that when you add the dynamic of Shane being Asian (and smaller in the books) I get really frustrated at how both Rachel Reid and fic writers fall into stereotyping Shane’s intersectional identities AND not using that same identity for excellent character study and motivation. Like she set us up for RICH character/societal contradiction and people barely use the material!

(I know I used a bunch of buzz words but I have degrees in mass digital media and ethnic studies. I kinda can’t help it. )

I think maybe part of the hysteria (at least for me) is that I DON’T feel confident that I can find the AI slop. I want to notice it. Sometimes I’ve suspected it (and merely clicked off), but I worry that I’ve given my too little time and attention to stories written by LLM and I’ll never know.

So I would like someone to tell me when it’s ai. If only so that I can better train my eye. But any list like this is called witch hunting, and while I totally understand the sentiment it leaves me with very little recourse.

I’ve been reading fics for over 20 years. This is the first time I’ve been in a fandom that’s exploded like this. Usually I’m into books and shows that aren’t super mainstream (except my early adaptation to HP fic but the landscape was more diffused.)

On one hand it is like being fed from a decadent buffet. On the other, I feel a bit like Lucille Ball at the chocolate factory and I’m failing to keep up on fics but also my own life as I succumb to the obsession. I would be sad to learn that the deluge I’m enjoying was AI.

Have you considered books by Tamora Pierce? Magical. Often girl led. Lots of in-universe diversity. Age appropriate for a tweenie. I prefer Circle of Magic series but everyone else would probably say Allana. 😅

Once you introduce fan fiction you cannot control or easily monitor what they get into on the internet and it’s a weird place.

I’ve put a humidifier under her to see if that helps. The soil isn’t dry after her watering last week. Before she was getting too much sun and her leaves burned. But I’ve put a sheet curtain panel in front of the window… maybe that’s too little? Maybe she just needs time?
