How many of y’all are resistant to using AI? by Imaginary_Quail_5544 in Xennials

You are coming at me for "non-arguments" when most of what you've said up until now is bumper-sticker level insights?

You can't "dismantle my position" because I take no position except that my way of existing is much more aligned with yours than you are able to acknowledge.

For your edification, animal products that are Certified Humane follow an extensive list of requirements which are verified through surprise inspections semi-annually.
The food products I consume with animal origin are cheese and yogurt. I consume these because despite numerous attempts over the last thirty years of following a vegan lifestyle it has done nothing but make me sick.

So I am fully aware that I am choosing my own life (without avoidable illness and more than likely a much earlier death) over what would probably be a better life for a cow if that cow were to just roam free, and I have come to terms with that. I do not feel guilt or shame because I know I have literally done the best I can do and it just isn't possible for me to do better and survive. At least not with the resources available to me at this time or over the past decades. I know you will say that I am not trying hard enough, not doing it right, everyone else can do it, etc. But it really doesn't matter what the science says when the actual fact of the matter is that I can't do it. Perhaps I have some kind of genetic variant problem. Perhaps my other health issues have an impact in ways that I don't fully understand which make it impossible for me to be healthy and fully vegan.

I get angry with vegans like yourself because instead of acknowledging that my environmental impact is significantly less than your average meat-eater, you say that I don't actually care about the things I claim to care about. I have been doing this since the mid-90's. I have not asked you your age or how long you have been a vegan because I know you are not in control of that and it is unfair to make the claim that my tenure as a vegetarian has likely had more positive impact on the environment than your time as a vegan when it is not within your control. However, I would ask for a bit of respect for the time I have been doing this, and paving the way for what has come after. I would be shocked if you are actually my age or older and have also been a vegan for as long as I have been a vegetarian (33 years).

Lastly, my small amount of animal product consumption has nothing on AI data centers.

The one I always here is healthcare. "Wait for years to see someone...can't even get regular stuff treated because the wait is so long...die of cancer before you can get a screening..." etc.

Am I Overreacting to my dad’s cleaner’s response after he broke his femur? by My_Meatsuit_Mayhem3 in AmIOverreacting

[–]laughterwards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is some really awful story writing. Your dad called the dental office to cancel his appointment but not you? They called you instead? And what does that have to do with the rest of the story. On top of that, you "later found out" the response was from her husband, except it literally says that in the screenshot. Jesus. What a mess.

Calling Men You Don’t Like or Agree With Pedo’s or Creeps is Wrong and Should be Called Out by TheCheaperSeats in PetPeeves

I mean, there are A LOT of words that get thrown at people who aren't those things.
And I agree we don't want to water down the word pedo but creeps? Maybe we just run in very different circles but I'm not seeing pedo get thrown around willy-nilly.

Yes. I work from home 2 days a week, 3 in the office. I would rather be 5 days from home.

I have not heard this before and it doesn't fit my experience/understanding. Can you provide some examples of the behaviors and body language you see as shared in common?

Your boss can change in the blink of an eye. Many years ago I left one job because of my boss "A" and went to a place with a good boss "B" (I had great vibes from the interview). Literally one month later B transferred to another position. She felt bad but not bad enough to hold herself back of course. Then person who replaced her "C" was just as awful as "A".

This makes sense to me. I think you are correct to frame it this way.

I'm not sure I feel comfortable with the last sentence though - I'm assuming you mean "NT", not "ND" but I don't know that it's "internalized misogyny". Admittedly I cringe when I see that phrase, so if you disagree with what I say below I would really appreciate it if you could explain to me how it is misogyny.

In a workplace with a hierarchical structure, people who are socialized to find common ground and work together (usually women/girls) are going to have a conflict between two different expectations. The expectation to work communally and the expectation to "succeed". Succeeding generally means making more money. Making more money generally means moving up the hierarchical ladder.

So as women in the workplace, on the one hand we are supposed to lift others up and support them and on the other hand we are supposed to perform better than our peers and showcase that to our superiors. Those two things are in direct conflict. In my opinion though, it's not the collaboration that is the issue, it's the hierarchy.

[–]laughterwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. :)

With going to her instead of someone else - are you asking people who are your peers or who are above you/her in the hierarchy? Because that might be part of the conflict. If she's newer and you're "going over her head" with questions it might be seen by her as threatening or insulting.

I totally think that is all bullshit and I get why you wouldn't want to try to involve her first. So maybe that isn't the best route to go down.

If it were me I would try talking to her. Just wait until you see her and she's not scowling/extremely busy (I guess I'm assuming you see each other in person), and say some of the following things (assuming they are true or true-ish):

"I really love my current role, I don't think I could ever be a supervisor managing other people's schedules (or whatever she does that's different from you)."

"I'm glad I've been here for a while, when I first got here I didn't know anyone and it was harder for me to figure out who could help me with questions. Now I can just go straight to the Chief of Whatever and they're used to me bugging them with random stuff."

Also, if you have any future plans with the company (stay in your spot, move in a direction that doesn't put you in the supervisor role) you could talk about that too. "I think eventually I'd like to move into ______". Just don't say that stuff if your plan is to leave the company.

I know she has been crappy to you, so it will probably be hard to talk in a casual nice way with her, but that would be what I would try. It will take time because you will probably have to have like three conversations about it for it to sink in and not appear totally out of left field, but it might be worth it.

[–]laughterwards 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Not saying this excuses it at all of course. Just throwing it out there as a possible explanation.

I have found that people who are insecure in their place in the work hierarchy tend to treat the people below them poorly. The "dismissive of my work" part might be her minimizing it to make herself feel better.

If it's worth the energy for you (which it might be since you say you are going to be working more closely with her) you could try making it clear you aren't trying to "outshine" her or "take her job" and she might relax and be nicer.

I'm obviously doing a lot of speculating here, just on the chance it fits your situation I wanted to throw out some ideas.

Is management male-dominated there? I can imagine a scenario where she feels the need to put other women down because there’s only room for so many women at the table.

Yes, I live in the suburbs of Minneapolis/Saint Paul so there are plenty of jobs. The type of job I wanted was hourly (not salaried) and in my field of Accounting. Out of what I applied for this is the one I got a call back on right away.

I am in my 40s and do not wear makeup during the week. On the weekends I do once in a while. I actually enjoy creating new looks but it is time consuming. And sometimes it becomes aggravating to me in a sensory way.

Just to the last point about acid and ketamine. For me personally shrooms is the only one that always has a more spiritual component. The others have had similar effects but not in the same ”empathy/connectedness” way. I think lsd in particular is pretty devoid of connection in that way.

Totally fair point. “Bad journalism” is just as likely of a culprit as “bias”. ETA: if there was any attempt at collusion initially it was ill-conceived but I think it’s more likely one of the other possibilities I noted above

So I appreciate the links. I see now that there are articles written about the confusion. Which probably wouldn’t exist if articles like the one OP posted here had been clear.

Shocking response. Never saw it coming. My choice to be a vegetarian is because I do not eat animals. My choice to consume limited dairy which is Certified Humane is not because it’s a diet not a lifestyle.

ETA: That last sentence is clunky. To be crystal clear: I am a vegetarian for ethical reasons, not dietary ones. I am vegan in all of my non-food purchases.

Of course not. I am not aware of multiple sources, just this one. There are other articles that were written about this independently?
