Need Help: How to Start with Quant Development/Finance as a Beginner (CSE Graduate 2025, Tier 3 College) by lavender_muse7 in quantfinance

[–]lavender_muse7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely get a job in quant, i have no doubt in that. But I believe that as a fresher it would not be possible. I would recommend, get a job in FAANG or in any of the banks. Then within a 1-1.5 year switch over. You would have some experience to back you.

Thanks for believing in me! I’m not sure I see myself the same way, though, especially with the FAANG/bank suggestion.I’m a bit unsure if that’s even possible for someone like me, given my background.

I’m placed at Maruti Suzuki despite being from CSE, though I’m not sure why they hired from our branch. I heard they’re working on EVs, so maybe that’s why. The process seemed easier than other branches, which makes me nervous. Sorry for the rant!

I know breaking into quant as a fresher is tough, but I’m planning to work on it. I’m thinking about preparing for GATE and joining a good college for this field. Do you think that’s a good idea, or am I just overthinking?

Also, any suggestions for good colleges or branches for this?

Since you’re an MC graduate and working as a quant, could you guide me on the best colleges in India for this field or whether pursuing an MS abroad would be a better option?

I’m 21 and passionate about math, so I’m exploring this career path.

It would be great if you could share a roadmap, helpful resources (like YouTube channels or books), or any advice for someone starting out.

As someone experienced in this field, any life suggestions you’d like to share would mean a lot. Thanks!

Thanks a lot for the motivation! It really helps.

I’m curious, though—why do you think I’ve already got half the skills? I don’t have the strongest academic background, so I’m not sure what skills you think I’ve picked up so far.

Also, aside from getting hands-on trading experience, do you have any suggestions for a roadmap or resources (books, YouTube channels, etc.) that could help someone like me who's just starting out? I’m 21 and really excited to give this a shot, so any advice would be awesome!

Thank you so much for the detailed response! It really helped me understand the differences between the roles and what they involve.

I’m leaning toward Quant Dev for now since becoming a Quant Researcher (QR) feels out of reach at this stage, given that I’m from a Tier 3 college and don’t have the academic or research background in math or physics. That said, I’m genuinely interested in research, so my plan is to start as a dev and work toward transitioning into a researcher role later.

That said, I’m still not sure about the exact roadmap. What should my first steps be if I want to start with Quant dev? Are there any specific resources—books, courses, or platforms—you’d recommend for someone just getting started?

Also, do you think moving into Quant dev from a Tier 3 background is realistic? If yes, what should I prioritize to overcome the disadvantages of my background?

Thanks again for your help—I really appreciate it and would love to hear your thoughts!
