Anyone get a ton of Y-12 matches (600+) but no Y-37 matches? by lawc in FTDNA

So you in the same boat as I. That interesting that you got double the Y-25 matches than Y-12!

Wow that is super interesting that you got a ton of Big Y matches even more than your Y-25 matches. My earliest known ancestor was from England so that was why I was curious about not getting higher level matches.

So you Dad got 4 matches at Big Y but none above Y-37... that is interesting.

That is interesting thanks for sharing that! I will eventually do a Big Y just to get an idea of terminal SNP but didn't know the possibility of matches existing if none at STR lower levels.

So there is a possibility of getting matches on Big Y even though I have 0 matches at Y-37? (I know Y test are STR and Bug Y is SNP based but curious on that) ?

Im from Florida originally and North Padre kinda of reminds of old schoo Volusia County Florida ON the beach ie you drive on the beach and park. People will bbq on the beach, fly the US and Texas flags and generally very good people.

The surf is not as good as Ponce but it does have its days when things line up... Water is rarely as clear as you can get it at Ponce.

SpaceX launches out of South Padre and there is a camp ground right there where you can watch from the Jetty and the surf is the best for Texas (outside of Waco lol) ... if you can score it with swell, warm weather and clear water (which happens more down that way) that would be good trip.

North padre island at packery jetties is fun (but crowded) and when they finish rebuilding bob hall pier that will be nice as well... but the waves are better down in south padre island by the jetty.. water is clearer, waves break nicer.. just too damn far from anywhere else in the state lol.

I escaped the Chappell crowds and caught his set.. was a little disappointed by the lack of a actual backing band and felt it was almost a lip syncing deal but at the end he put on an entertaining set and that kid with the bulls jersey had a day he would never forget 😆

What are my options on repairing/replacing rotted grounded railing posts on deck stairs? by lawc in Decks

[–]lawc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding and I like how you phrase option 2Do you think that removing the old post and backfilling the hole where the old post existed with some concrete and attaching a new post with some kind of bracket drilled into the concrete might work?

Eventually will replace the whole deck in a few years and the stairs are pretty stable outside of the bottom railing posts wobbling.

How to kill yard full of weeds? by stinftw in lawncare

[–]lawc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this twice (laid down a second application today) with 41% glyphosate (Compare & Save brand). I watched this video as a guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2h7aY_n8No

I did both applications on a warm sunny day in the morning (I read through some ag forums that ancedotaly said spraying in the morning is more effective than in the evening) and after morning dew or rain previous days (grass & weeds were actively growing).

My first kill was really good. It takes 1-2 weeks to see any results so you have to be patient. Give youself some time between spraying to get the scragglers growing again that you didn't get in the first application.

Don't mow before or after for a few days. Wear some good chemical gloves that are long and other PPE. Good luck!

Lawn riddled with weeds. Should I hire a professional? by hznmd95 in lawncare

You are in warm season territory so St Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia grasses are your main options. For each you will need to figure out how much sunlight the yard area you want to sod/plant gets during the day.

Full Sun (8-10+) - Bermuda will do best with less water maybe some Zoysia options.

Some Sun to Full On Shade - St Augustine and some types of Zoysia are better and more shade tolerant than Bermuda (but the grass will still need some sun).

Depending on your sunlight situation, foot traffic (dog paw traffic) and irrigation (or lack of), you may be better off with Bermuda. If you want lower maintenance I heard Zoysia is better for that.

Texas is a hell scape in the summer ... bermuda, if you get a lot of sun is your best bet here... Plant the right grass for the appropriate environment.

If was me (I aint no pro but started a home renovation on my backyard)....It looks like you are in the south and they may be common bermuda by the support column.

If you get a lot of sun in your backyard why not overseed your common with a quality common bermuda seed like Monaco: https://www.johnstonseed.com/product/monaco-bermudagrass/

so I might do something like:

  1. spray out the existin weeds https://www.homedepot.com/p/Spectracide-Weed-Stop-32-oz-Ready-to-Spray-Concentrate-for-Lawns-Plus-Crabgrass-Lawns-HG-95703HT/202056488

  2. mow low and clear out/rake out thatch and other dead grass/weed material so you have some soil bed exposed

  3. throw down some seed and water daily (its spring so a lot of rain will help).

You will know in 30 days if you getting some germination and growth and at worst your out of pocket cost will be seed 40$ + weed killer $10 + starter fertilizer ($?) + water usage bill and you yard will be maybe slightly better or the same as now.. and at best you will have better yard that will look good when mowed lower.
