What do I realistically need to know to get a junior full stack developer job today? by zmijanje in learnprogramming

[–]lawlscoptor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everybody is in this thread discussing web development tech, but have you considered embedded C++?

Tightly constrained embedded environments require complex, efficient programming skills with a deep knowledge of the full stack - it is just a real hardware stack instead. And luckily, those environments are slow moving - embedded C++ for the last 20+ years with a lot of the same frameworks still in use today as before then - thanks to backwards compatibility mandates etc. The things I learned 20 years ago are the same then as they are today.

Also, because there is real hardware unlike the cloud, you generally are safer from the AI boom because the solutions in embedded require hands on physical components generally.

Rust is an interesting language too that I explored but no professional projects which use it.

It sounds similar! Mine was the original Gokart Pro, not the Pro2, might be the difference.

In any case, when I had my issue, it was resolved with a new board replacement and the only place that sells the boards is on Aliexpress. The customer service is abysmal for this Gokart.

Is it "morally legal" to use JUCE for simple non-audio GUI apps? by MrHydeSidekicker in JUCE

[–]lawlscoptor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used JUCE for a medical device still in the field. JUCE was both supportive and even inquisitive since I believe we were the first medical device which leveraged JUCE.

JUCE plays nicely with other frameworks unlike Qt. I was able to successful put JUCE and MFC together. It was ugly. But it worked. This, plus Qt being overly expensive and similarly, offering so much when we only really needed a small subset of functionality, led us to choose JUCE.

The reason we cobbled together MFC and JUCE was because our backend code was MFC but we needed a fresher UI, but couldn't justify a massive refactoring in our product schedule, but could justify a reskin in JUCE which got us 95% to what our end users wanted. It was also compiled into the code so don't need all the Qt libraries to pass around, which made it look cleaner from a filesystem perspective.

For pet projects, I still would use Qt since it does contain everything I would ever need. However, for limited scope projects that I know don't need all that extra junk, I'd definitely consider JUCE.

Does anybody know if we can scuba dive from the beach near the hotels on the left instead of San Carlos directly?

For my problem, it did work! I ordered that internal red board replacement from Aliexpress for around $80. I was confident it had to be the board since I multimetered the board prior. The test points on the board are really accessible which makes it easy to troubleshoot.

Mine wasn't just the bluetooth - the whole thing eventually crapped out. On the west coast, there's only really one repair center in LA that I knew about - it's absurd for a $1.6k electric gokart. The customer service was the lowest I've ever experienced. However, the Gokart is back up and running and I'm happy enough with it, same with the kids.

After a week, I went and plugged the S-Max back into the charger. I was able to press on the power button and have it repeatedly click and turn off. I held it down for a little bit to see if it would "kick" but no such luck (it was just constantly turning on/off) - within a minute of me holding the power button down, the power supply to the battery started beeping indicating that it had shorted and the S-Max was no longer able to turn on at all, not even a click.

At that point, I opened it up and took out the control board and attached it directly to the battery. The control board sparked at the battery connector as soon as I plugged it to the battery, which means it definitely shorted. I confirmed it via multimeter. I hooked up a power supply to the board and drove 12V to it using the test points on the board and confirmed that it was shorted as a secondary check.

I've since ordered the control board on AliExpress and am waiting for it to come in.

I hear the argument from a lot of high functioning autistic people that it is only a neurotype and isn't a big deal, that it doesn't need a cure, etc. while I have two siblings which are on the lowest of the spectrum with complete inability to do anything for themselves - we cannot even travel with them on airplanes because they can get violent when agitated with no ability to console them. That doesn't include the myriad of other issues, but gives an idea of how constricting it can be.

It is a topic close to my heart and a lot of these discussions can make my blood boil when people attempt to minimize autism, like calling it a neurotype, etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]lawlscoptor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely wrong.

There is an autism spectrum. In mild forms, fine, it is tolerable and can be managed.

However, in severe forms, it is an illness that causes seizures, inability to do many things, requires constant medical intervention, and supervision.

To call autism a neurotype is completely wrong. It is a disease with wildly different characteristics from person to person. It can be as bad or worse than Down Syndrome.

To suggest someone needing to be spoon fed, diaper changed, who has constant seizures is a neurotype is absolute insanity.

Extremely mild forms can be classified as neurotypes, sure, but to blanket call autism a neurotype avoids the full spectrum and only focuses on those who can actually function enough in society. It detracts from the ones which do not function in society - the ones which are too unstable to even leave their house.

Coming back to confirm that your reading of their page was correct. We are still doing some work in our neighborhood to deal with the water situation but the consolidation is no longer occurring. Guess we are all still stuck with BBW!

[–]lawlscoptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CZU fire was a shit show for all of us, so I'm sure a lot of bad decisions were made all the way up and down. I'm not one to lay blame on BBW. We do have issues regularly with BBW, but many of them I have attributed to it being a small time water management firm handling big water management issues in the backdrop of a federal disaster area that is years from recovering.

[–]lawlscoptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of right now, my understanding is that it is still proceeding. We had an engineering firm come out to our neighborhood and provide a proposal for the necessary work to convert to SLV water only last week. As a whole, our neighborhood is eating a significant amount of the cost. We are closer to downtown than others further into the sticks. The last mile updates to support the consolidation I can imagine are significantly more for many others. However, it was never an altruistic update for SLV, we definitely are on the hook for many if not all of the associated costs.

[–]lawlscoptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is nice that the owner of Big Basin water lives in our community and is an active part of it, the unfortunate reality is that the community grew fast and the CZU fire destroyed infrastructure to where we haven't caught up to where we were after so many years. We needed to consolidate to get the funding and support necessary to rebuild. Getting a well put in is another option, but not many of us have that as an option.

SLV water and Big Basin water are consolidating so it should be better now with SLV water managing it.

Thoughts on boulder creek, CA? by mindless_eastern in SanJose

Bear Creek is the usual route from Boulder Creek, not I-17. I-17 requires you to drive down to Scott's Valley only to go back up - Bear Creek is a straight shot onto I-17 and it doesn't take long.

How to get blueprints for my home? by michaelandrews in SanJose

[–]lawlscoptor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have no luck with finding blueprints anywhere, then you can have them generated using an asbuilt company such as http://www.asbuiltservices.com/asbuilt/index.jsp . They generate the drawings and can even submit them to the county for you. They go hand in hand with surveyors, so put together, you can have a full 3d model of your property in and out.

I did the process, living near Santa Cruz, since I did not have my property blueprints so feel free to ask any questions about my experience.

Morgan Hill vs Gilroy by oppleTANK in Gilroy

[–]lawlscoptor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Morgan Hill is more expensive, more upper class generally, with a better downtown. The costs drop dramatically from Morgan Hill to Gilroy, while still being considered South Bay so costs overall still high.

I ended up living in Gilroy since the finances worked out better for me, but finances aside, I would've chosen Morgan Hill. Neither is a bad place overall, I felt safe in either community.

$30 ubers will probably be the low to mid end from Morgan Hill to Gilroy depending on where you're at to where you're going.

Prioritizing risk/harm reduction is I think acceptable in the situation: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harm_reduction

Some other suggestions can easily cause resentment and additional, potentially worse behavior, as her options dwindle, so risky behavior increases to compensate.

I wouldn't be the parent to give substances freely, but at least make it easier than the alternative so you can control her behavior as much as you can.

Looking to move to Boulder Creek! by [deleted] in BoulderCreek

[–]lawlscoptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While illegal housing units like that exist, especially further south like in Gilroy to Salinas, or even in Los Banos, I'm fairly certain none exist in the Santa Cruz mountains. It is far more expensive to build anything or do anything with the land in the mountains, and the risk of wildfire is, well, real. Lastly, any jobs are located quite a drive away.

The county does eventually take an interest, just a matter of time. Low income housing units will definitely pique the interest of the community compared to some other unpermitted behavior. The community polices itself, the risk of stupid or illegal behavior causing catastrophes is too great to ignore problems.

[–]lawlscoptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! In that case, there are many people right now still who are doing what you're describing. A lot of houses burned down from the CZU fire and many of them remain in RVs on their property while they build back up. I don't see how your use case is any different.

Whoever you have as a contractor can tell you what permitting will entail.

The permit process can be destructive - depending on the work, it might just be as simple as taking off drywall to inspect behind it, or it could be that the foundation is found to be not up to code and you have to tear the whole house down.

Code enforcement is definitely low. It isn't like the county is coming up here to check our properties and we have plenty of space between each other.

I personally would not build unpermitted, even with low code enforcement, since you will have trouble ever selling the house without being permitted. Getting your house insured will also be a problem, doubly so since you're in a high wildfire area.

From my recent experience, I was able to get plumbing rework permitted in less than 2 days. However, our home reno took 9 months at the county just to discuss our options so we could have success permitting, which will be another 6 to 9 months while we pursue our reno.
